Tyler Perry Gets to 'Meet the Browns' with Lionsgate
Filed under: Comedy, Deals, Lionsgate Films, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand
When you mention the name Tyler Perry around Lionsgate Films, dollar bills begin to immediately fall from the sky. Of course, that's fictitious, but Perry's worth to the Lionsgate empire is magnificent. The first three films Perry conceptualized, wrote and directed made the company over $200 million in box office sales and their worth in DVD sales is in the millions as well. It only makes sense then that Perry would be given the opportunity to film his fifth project with Lionsgate called Meet the Browns.Meet the Browns was originally a play written by Perry that is similar thematically to his previous films. A single mom, understandably exhausted both with family life and a hope for something greater, is rejuvenated by meeting the father she never had. After finding her father, she spends quality time with him and his joyous, high-spirited family, thus obtaining a newer understanding of her own life. The storyline sounds sweet and inspiring, especially for those enduring the same struggles.
Tyler Perry created Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Family Reunion, and most recently Daddy's Little Girls starring Gabrielle Union -- another single parent, family-themed film that raked in audience members last February. (Granted, not as many people showed up for that one as they did for his previous big-screen efforts, but that's not stopping Lionsgate from taking more and more chances on the man.)
Clearly, Perry is an inspiration to those seeking success in doing what they do best. Perry's love for writing and connecting with the souls of his audience members is clear. Those qualities attribute to much of his success as a playwright and also helped him acquire his own film studio in Atlanta. His strong character driven storylines about overcoming the odds also relate beyond skin tone and gender, and are purely uplifting for all. Meet the Browns will start filming this summer as Lionsgate hopes to promptly release it after his fourth film with them, Why Did I Get Married?

Tyler Perry's films are a mess, and they're absolutely the basest attempts to appeal to the lowest common denominator of the African-American community, selling their most cliched stereotypes back to themselves. His films, characters and stories are so attrociously simpleminded, narrow and base in their view of blacks, that if they were done by a white man that man would be villified for his obvious racist hate-mongering. Tyler Perry is a carnival huckster, which is why he was relegated to the "chitlin circuit" (the circuit's term, not mine) when he was just a hack playwright. Now he's a hack filmmaker, and all you do is copy and paste his one sheet?
Terrible posting for an alleged "cinema" site.

This would be much better news if Tyler Perry had an ounce of talent.

Meet the Browns sounds like something you say as part of an announcement you have have to go big potty -- as in, "Are we out of toilet paper? I gotta go Meet the Browns."

It’s so difficult for African Americans to get pass the struggle of image and identity in the media – the media has always been so harsh to our reality. Tyler Perry is very much a part of that struggle; he is part, but not the blame. As an African American man, artist and filmmaker, it was his choice to use stereotypes and caricatures to convey the message of his work and he’s making a large impact, like it or not. I have to defend Tyler Perry’s right to be the artist that he is, not for his sake, but because there is a large segment of the African American community that believes and feel that Tyler Perry’s work represent who they are. Who are we to tell them any different?

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Leroy E. Williams, Jr. I am a gospel playwright, actor, producer, director and the founder/president of the Pensacola Community Arts & Recreation Association (PCARA). My gospel stage-plays have been compared and ranked with the best, i.e., Tyler Perry. I am very proud to announce that I have released to DVD four of my most recent performed stage-plays as follows: The Unbelievable Man, A Message In The Storm, Holier Than Thou and The Boogie Woogie Preacher. Please take a moment from your very busy schedule and visit my website (www. pcaraonline.com) for a preview of these productions. I am currently writing a new gospel stage-play entitled " Too Blessed To Be Stressed!". This production will debut February 1 thru February 3, 2008, in Pensacola, FL.
I need your help. It would be a great honor and privilege for me to meet with Tyler Perry to discuss how I can move my God given talent to the next level with his guidance. I would also like to propose to Mr. Perry to co-write a gospel stage-play entitled, "The Blind Date" (Madea Meets The Boogie Woogie Preacher). Any assistance you can provide me to make this dream come true will be greatly appreciated and a blessing from God.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and assistance.
Respectfully,
Leroy E. Williams, Jr.
