Mariah Carey to Play Herself in Adam Sandler Comedy?
Filed under: Comedy, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom
Seeing as she's had some problems making the transition from singer to actress (I wouldn't exactly consider Glitter, WiseGirls and State Property 2 must-see entertainment), it's only fitting that Mariah Carey would toss aside any Carey-like characters for the time being, and opt to play herself instead. And, in doing so, she may have just landed her biggest film to date. JoBlo tells us that Carey will star alongside Adam Sandler in You Don't Mess With The Zohan; a film that finds Sandler teaming with the brilliant comedic minds of Judd Apatow and Robert Smigel (of SNL fame). Dennis Dugan, who's had his fare share of hits and misses (Big Daddy and Happy Gilmore being hits, with National Security and The Benchwarmers being misses) will direct, while production is set to begin this summer with an eye on a summer 2008 release.
In the film, Sandler will play Zohan, a Mossad agent who's so fed up with his life that he fakes his death to pursue his dream of becoming a hairdresser in New York City. That right there is scary in and of itself. Carey will play herself (a singer who's gone through more transformations than the Autobots) who becomes all mixed up with Zohan's former nemesis The Phantom, thus forcing the former agent to return to his roots and kick some ass. As far as other cast members go, all we know right now is that Rob Schneider has signed on to play an East Yistannen cab driver. Oh joy. Pic will mark back-to-back projects for both Sandler and Dugen; the actor and director also partnered up on this summer's I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which hits theaters on July 20. What do you think of Mariah Carey, the actress? Does her involvement automatically ruin the film for you, or are you happy that someone is finally giving her the big break she so desperately deserves?

I am finally glad that people are willing to give Mariah a chance to act. They never give her any credit on her acting abilities, but she CAN act.

She was in some awful movie with Chris O'Donnell too. Can't remember the name of it. IMDB...nah too lazy. I thought she was in her element in Wise Girls. Guess I'm willing to see anything though...my netflix has 7000 movie ratings.

I don't know whether I'm excited to see Mariah on the big screen again. I guess it depends on how funny the movie will be if it were someone else. Maybe she'll fit in just fine.

I think it's great, are we forgetting that C. Howard was also in Glitter? He's moved on to greater film success, why not Mariah? She's great and her acting in Glitter was excellent, it was the movie that sucked not her. How people confuse the two, I can't fathom.
Can't wait to see Mariah's new film Tennessee and I've course I'll go see this one when it comes out!!!

Here's what bugs me; why does it ALWAYS take fans to point out that actually, Mariah's done other movies, namely WiseGirls, for which she won extremely favourable reviews and consideration amongst her peers - including actors such as Sean Penn which, had it been treated fairly, and released into the mainstream would have shown that Mariah is MUCH more capable than her critics assumed heretofore. Instead there seems to be some 'unwritten bias rule' amongst most journalists that ensures she is never EVER treated fairly in print. Were that not the case then us fans wouldn't be forced to even the scales in alomost every article we read.
P.S. The Chris O'Donnel film was 'The Bachelor'.

I agree, she is a fantastic actress, unfortunately her choice of projects have been er....lacking.
I hope the critics will give her a chance this time!

Maria Carey's acting is very good, alot better that the critics give her. Her first movie she stared in Glitter was unsuccessful due to poor directing and editing and poor timing. It came out on 9-11-2001. No one was in the mood to go to a movie at that time. There was also very little advertising for the movie. If the people don't know the movie is out there, they're not going to go. Since then with her very awesome and respectable acting as Raychel in Wisegirls, Mariah has proven herself an actress as good as any in Hollywood today! I am looking forward to her new movie Tennessee which comes out this year as well as this comedy in 2008. I am confident Mariah will prove the critics wrong and be just as successful acting as her singing!
