Monday Morning Poll: Will 'The Sopranos' Head to the Big Screen?
Filed under: Drama, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Monday Morning Poll
Note: This post will contain spoilers, so if you haven't watched The Sopranos series finale yet, then I suggest not reading the rest of this post.
Say what you want about the choose your own adventure ending last night, but David Chase shoveled out one of the most talked-about finales in television history. And if that was his original goal right from the start, then the man succeeded ... big time. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what went down, while I surf around and read what other folks have to say about the ending. About the Journey. About the highly amusing cut to black. Some people believe they have it all worked out, but others (like myself) aren't putting a label on it. Like Tony's life, it is what it is. I don't know why people always made it out to be about Tony either dying or getting pinched. Wasn't this show, at its core, always about a man trying to save his family? And if that's the case, then last night's ending definitely did satisfy. Ah, but was it an ending?
We've mentioned before that a Sopranos movie would be hard to pull off since a bunch of the major characters are now dead. But Tony's not. And neither is his family. As you could see, there was so much that was about to go down last night (an indictment, etc ...) that when Chase decided to end it that way, you couldn't help but wonder what his other intentions were. Was he just out to mess with us? Or, did he leave open the possibility of bringing The Sopranos to the big screen? Personally, I'm more than satisfied with the ending that was given to us and wouldn't be interested in any further continuation of the Sopranos story. I didn't need Tony to either get whacked or go to jail in order for me to walk away with a full stomach. But I do know there's a lot of people out there who weren't satisfied, and would love to see more.
So, I ask you: Did David Chase leave some space open for an eventual trip to the big screen? And, if so, would you be interested in a Sopranos movie?

"you either get wacked to or go to prison" open ended pick what you want it would be much better that way.. you would moan if he got hit, picked up by the feds, or live on for 50 more years. now you can have it your way.

I won a party poll over the ending... ie, Phil gets whacked and the family lives on. But some people are positive that there was a gunman going into the bathroom .. and everyone would get wiped out when he emerged.. everyone but Meadow.
Me? I just saw McGuffin after McGuffin, including the tease that there might be a film in the future.
I'm thinking there might be one someday, but not soon.

Since I've slagged Cinematical more than once for their lack of spoiler etiquette, it seems only right that I applaud them when they get it right. Well done, folks, and keep up the good work.

I don't think so. Chase seems to be one of this typical hollywood arteeests. Develop a brilliant show/character and then watch it consume you. I think Mr. Chase intentionally choose an open ending to tweak the viewers. There will be no movie coming.

I don't think there should be a movie. This was a great ending (or non-ending). Please don't prolong it.

The ending was horrible! Too many issues left unsolved.
The Federal Agent and the Midle East guys, Silvio, Anthony Jr etc, etc.
Coming soon to a theather near you:
Sopranos I Tony loses 50 pounds and learns Spanish
Sopranos II Tony has liposuction and a face lift
Sopranos III At 80, tony has sex with 200 women in one year!
It is all about the cash baby!

I am going to miss watching the Sopranos on Sunday nights; however, I feel a movie would be simply adding to the pockets of creators, actors, and producers. I don't understand why everyone has to have a cut and dry answer to every issue. We need to learn to use our imagination and make our own interpretations of what the outcome will be, and not have it spoon fed to us by someone else.

Geez, Paige, your comments make me wanna barf. Why ya gotta dress down those that wanted SOME closure on a FEW things? I don't hear people asking for "cut and dry" answers on every issue, nor do they seem incapable of using their "imagination" - - most viewers just wanted a bit of an ending to the series. And since the fans didn't create, write, direct or produce the show, they were hoping those that did would come through for them. Chill, baby.

Took me until today to finally agree that the ending was ok... not great, but ok.
I'd love to see a movie set in the future.
Older Tony on his way out, what happened to the family told in flashback. AJ now up and coming in the crew, Benny maybe running the show and T either in prison or just having gotten out.
Or... forget the current gang and do a prequel as they have been mentioning. A movie about the heyday of the mob when they REALLY ran things, instead of this watered down version. As the tour bus driver said, Littel Italy used to be 40 square blocks but now has winnowed down to one strip of shops and restaurants.
Tony's life goes on and on and on and on... for some until the mystery members only guy comes out of the bathroom. For others, until he gets arrested. For the rest, it's business as usual with the whole restaurant scene just visual cues as to the threats of 'this thing of ours'. We wandered into his life and now we (abruptly) wander out.
So long T, gonna miss you.
