After Last Night's Wild 'Silver Surfer' Screening, Tiffany Chen Responds to Chud.com Slams Through Cinematical
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Celebrities and Controversy, Exhibition, 20th Century Fox, Remakes and Sequels
We at Cinematical have had our share of feuds with publicists just like every other site, but we've always been on good terms with Fox publicist Tiffany Chen. I know her to be nothing less than a professional and someone who is responsive and helpful and a generally friendly person, and I was quite surprised to see the Chud.com post by Devin Faraci that accused her of acting unprofessional and rude at last night's Silver Surfer screening, which was by all accounts, a circus. Cinematical's managing editor Erik was there, and nearly walked out after having to sit next to a homeless person, among other things.
If you want the specific list of charges Devin hurls at Tiffany, you can read it here. Tiffany has chosen to release a response through us, which I'm going to begin quoting liberally from in a second, but first I just have to point out that this wouldn't be the first time Devin has gotten it wrong in the area of personal relations. I once went to a Fox Atomic event where, after a long night prior, I chose to sit quietly and sip some coffee and watch the proceedings. When I got home that night, several people pointed me to a similar rant by Devin that accused me of being unfriendly towards him. It ended with some kind of vague threat that I was going to be ostracized from the online film community because of it. I don't know what else to say about that.
Here is Tiffany, giving some background about last night's screening. "I am always really careful about RSVPs because I want to avoid situations like this. There is nothing worse than showing up for a screening/event and your name is not on the list. I read what Devin wrote on the site and the e-mail correspondance tells you exactly what happened. After I wrote back and told him about the screening, I asked him if he could make it with a guest. I got no reply that he was even coming -- with or without a guest. I send out dozens of invitations everyday and always need my contacts to reply back to let me know if they will be there. Most of them are really good about that, but sometimes people forget -- it happens. If I assume that everyone who received an invitation would be there, I would have a list three times as long. Carol Cundiff and Harvey Karten did send out invitations for this particular promo screening (not all-media) They always say that in order to attend, you must RSVP through me. This is especially why."
Tiffany goes on to talk about Devin's behavior towards her. "The dialogue between him and I is way beyond dramatic. I was in the theater checking the capacity and was on my way to the crowd when I ran into him by the concession stand. I guess he saw me and knew it was me (I had digital press kits and the guest list in my hand -- dead giveaways). He was in mid-sentence when I was face-to-face with him. With the crowd right behind him, I had to lean in to hear him. There were a handful of online critics who were not on the list, but after speaking to me, they all got in. There was space, so it was not a problem. Before he gave me a chance to even reach for the reserved ticket, he started ranting about how ridiculous it was that he was not on the list. He leaned in and threw the digital press kit (which scared me a bit because the box was a good six steps behind me -- I thought he was going to hit me) and said he'll just pay the $10 to see the film and stormed out."
Finally, Tiffany refutes the allegation in Devin's piece about a Fox publicist moving people around to make room for her boyfriend. "There were no Fox publicists there except for me. The girl that Devin is referring to at the bottom has absolutely no relation to Fox or Allied Advertising; she was part of the general admission audience. She did approach me a few times asking me if the press people can move to make room for her and her boyfriend. My answer was a definite no, but if someone voluntarily moved, I would have nothing to do with it. I would NEVER bump a press person for this."
She closes by taking the high road and saying that "this particular screening was especially crazed," but that "I'm sure that on a normal day Devin is a fine gentleman."

And this is why I never read chud. I have no problem believing that some wannabe Harry Knowles (eww) would throw a tantrum at the most meager slight.

Wow, Devin reeks of RJ Spencer, the bitter web journalist knockoff played by Rainn Wilson on the Comic Con episode of Entourage.
Seriously, if you can't have the courtesy to respond back to a simple question ("Will you be bringing a guest?"), how can you possibly feel you deserve to a reserve seat. That's not to even mention the prick's condescending attitude towards typical movie goers, you know, the ones who actually buy tickets.
Chud can eat my shorts after a chili cook off.

You know, whenever Blogs start getting some decent notice and respect vis a vis the mainstream media, someone like that CHUD guy completely screws it up with a childish rant like that, and serves as a perfect example of why Blogs don't get decent notice and respect :p. So he feels slighted by ONE PR person, and so he won't write a review? Seriously, is he 12 years old?

I have never read CHUB before. And now I know I will never read it in the future. This guy should be ashamed of himself. It's a reviewers job to watch movies. Who cares if you don't get a good seat? Maybe then you will know what it's like to see a movie with "normal people." This hack of an online writer gives all online writers a bad name. Somebody should take his laptop away. He's obviously lost touch with reality and finds himself to be too important. If press can't act civil in public arenas, then they should not be allowed in. I know a few publicists who can have bad days but if you have to deal with people like Mr. Faraci, I think you're entitled to a few bad days. Not that Tiffany did anything wrong here. If anything, she was too kind.

So the part where she says in her email to reply was lost on him, and he blames Fox for it? That's a logical leap...

You guys are a joke. This stuff happens all the time in other realms (politics, sporting events, etc) and professionals deal with it internally. No wonder the studios don't take blogger reviews seriously. You guys sound like third-graders at recess.
Airing these tirades was a huge mistake.

He was swearing, throwing stuff and acting like he deserved some kind of super-special treatment, while this lady seems like she was trying hard to keep control over something that was pretty hard to manage.
Seems like this Devin guy's got some pretty big ego on him.

I'm actually a regular reader of CHUD, as they're a very informative site, with very well written articles and reviews - usually with an extra dose of snark. Now while I think Devin is a very good writer and reviewer, he can be kind of an a-hole, so...

I never made an aggressive move towards Tiffany Chen. No action that I took could be construed as aggressive or that I was going to hit her. The press kit box was an arm's length from me, not six steps.
And Ryan, I wasn't threatening you or anything. Nobody likes you in the New York junket community. I'm not going to name names because other people don't have my lack of social graces, but that's just the truth.

You're not naming names because there are none to be named, obviously. You're the one making publicists feel like they're about to be clocked, but *I'm* unliked? Wow.

I don't know whether or not Devin remembered to hit REPLY or RSVP but Devin and CHUD are very well known and respected in the industry by every single other studio besides Fox. I actually ran into Devin as I was walking in and he had come back out to get a reserved seat. He didn't seem particularly heated to me though he obviously was flustered. When I got into the theatre I saw why because the place was PACKED, but there were a good number of seats roped off and more than enough for him to take one (sans the guest that he wasn't allowed to bring). I grabbed a seat for myself and Devin then went back out to look for him but he was gone. I didn't see his exchange with Tiffany, but I know Devin well enough to know that he wouldn't get mad unless he was really being given the runaround and frankly, as soon as he showed up, they should have found Tiffany and got him in with a reserved pass. There's no excuse for an outlet like CHUD to be excluded from sitting in a decent section of the theatre to review a movie over some random person who wants to sit with her boyfriend or anyone else. (I should note that many of the people in that section had guests and I had to uninvite my own guest after I was told I couldn't bring one AFTER receiving an Email asking me if I was bringing a guest, which I said I was.)
I'm in a weird position because I write for a website for a living who I know values and appreciates their relationships with the studios, but I also don't like seeing my online brothers being treated like shit..and that is clearly the case here. My interactions with Tiffany have been limited at best and FOX-NY now is in the habit of not inviting critics to screenings at all... if you're interested, you have to ask them and then they'll let you know about it. And a ridiculous Thursday evening screening at best... well after all of the print dailies have already run their reviews that morning.

Ryan, I was out with fellow NYC journalists today and the ones who knew who you were (the ones who didn't know you had been at junkets and even tables with you, but you're so unfriendly that they couldn't pick you out of a line-up of balding men with delusions of being interesting) were all on the same page as me.
Maybe the publicists I'll be hanging out with before moving to Los Angeles will agree. Yes, I'm so aggressive to publicists that I count many among my friends and have even been over their houses. Because I am so physically intimidating to them.
You're a real dipshit, Ryan.

Devin -- let me get this straight. I'm so barely-known that you reference me at your get-togethers? That makes a lot of sense. Once again, I have yet to hear one single name. Not even an outlet.
I don't think I need to dignify this any more. Go back to getting scoops from 'Belloq', who is probably your neighbor down the hall or something. I think he contacted us as well. He said that Yakov Smirnoff is playing the main Soviet bad guy.

I don't honestly care either way because I feel as online bloggers you guys are being overrated in terms of influence.
But Ryan, you do come off like an unreasonable dickhead in this article by slamming Devin for personal reasons when the focus of your story should be about Ms Chen and Devin's allegedly spat. And as a reader of this site, I do have to say you're nothing special and your reviews are mediocre at best. Check my IP, I'm not in the NY press circle or even in the same country as you but even I think you deserve getting some abuse over this.
Let's keep the egos to a minimum then, shall we?

Wow all that just to lose huge amounts of respect from your readership. Chud is a total waste of time and Devin sounds like a prick, but how the hell is this an article? #7 was spot on. This never, ever should have been posted. Save the personal drama stories for the people in the industry we actually care about. You're bloggers, you're not even journalists. Don't mean to come off as a dick, but seriously. Find me someone in the entertainment industry that _doesn't_ agree with that statement at this point. You'll get there, but this is a huge step backwards. Jesus.

I think everyone here needs to take a massive chill pill. The screening in question was a complete mess, one of the worst I've ever been to. I thought briefly about walking out, but decided to suck it up because, at the end of the day, I need to get paid. Like Devin, I did not receive a reserved ticket -- but I'm also the kind of guy who wouldn't request something that wasn't specifically given to me. But that's just how I am. Perhaps I need a bigger ego; who the f*ck knows, who the f*ck cares.
I think everyone here needs to get over themselves, plain and simple. Devin's been cordial with me in the couple of times we've met, so I refuse to bash the dude publically. For what? Was he a tad out of line? Probably. Then again, I know he's dealing with a lot of shit this week, what with the death of a close, personal friend. And since I'm also dealing with a death in the family this week, I can see how it might be easy to lose it over a situation like this. Ryan's my boss, and so I refuse to bash him publically as well. I know Ryan personally; I know he's a little rough around the edges, but I also know he's a good writer and a nice guy who cares passionately about what he does.
And that's just it; we're writers. We're not paid to crap on one another, and we shouldn't. Essentially, we're all part of the same online team, and it's bullsh*t battles like these (from both sides) that bring the online world back down to the third grade level most associate it with. We all need to grow up, and we all need to get one with our lives.

Ryan, that you even posted this is so out of line, that I'm blown away you even consider yourself a journalist. You post her response and then throw out there that you happen to think Devin sucks also. Wow, I wonder if you've got an agenda or anything. Are you surprised at the responses popping up ripping you? Talk about perpetuating steroetypes of online entertainment journalism.
