Eli Roth Talks 'Hostel II' Box-Office, Blames Rampant Piracy, Says 'Cell' Is Now On Hold

Director Eli Roth is speaking out about the lackluster box-office for his latest film, Hostel: Part II, and he's blaming everyone but himself. Roth puts piracy front and center as the reason for the film's performance. "Piracy has become worse than ever now, and a stolen workprint (with unfinished music, no sound effects, and no VFX) leaked out on online before the release, and is really hurting us, especially internationally," he says, before going on to specifically tear into critics who reviewed a leaked copy of the film. "Critics have actually been reviewing the film based off the pirated copy, which is inexcusable," he says. "Some of these critics I have actually known for a few years, and while I wouldn't dignify them by mentioning them by name, I know who they are, as do the studios, and other filmmakers, and they will no longer have any access to any of my films." Roth also advises fans of his that haven't seen Hostel: Part II to "go now, because after next weekend the film will be gone from theaters."
As for the future, Roth says "I am not directing Cell any time soon, and I most likely will take the rest of the year to write my other projects. Which means I wouldn't shoot until the spring and you wouldn't see a film directed by me in the cinemas until at least next fall." He goes on to say that in Hollywood, "the R-rated horror film is in serious jeopardy. Studios feel the public doesn't want them anymore, and so they are only putting PG-13 films into production. The only way to counter this perception is to get out there and support R-rated horror."

No offense, but you have to be a bit of an idiot to call this film misogynistic. The film hated men far more than women. Quick, name a single tolerable male character that lasts more than 10 minutes in the film. Name a single male character with a single worthwhile characteristic. You can't.
Now do the same for women. You get one strong, powerful girl.
Advantage - women. So how could it possibly be misogynistic?
Anyway, I saw this movie only because I was walking by a new theater and had time to kill, so I figured it was worth checking out the new seating. Turned out to be a pretty decent movie. Not great, but think about the genre:
These aren't horror movies, so they shouldn't be scary.
These are gore movies, yet typically lack. Here we got one good bit of gore, thanks to some dogs.
Most of the peers of this movie are terrible. Turistas? The Hills Have Eyes? House of 1000 Corpses? Wolf Creek? All of these movies are unwatchable, poorly directed, terribly paced, terribly acted, horribly written with massive holes, etc. Yet most made solid money.
By contrast, Hostel 2 was very well directed. It felt like quality, substance aside. It had some weight to the cinematography. It was decently written without many painful plot holes or overly stupid characters. It concentrated on giving us a plot rather than shoehorning boring garbage around the rare gore scene. And the torture sequences weren't really about torture (relative to most of the others, there was hardly torture in this one at all.)
Roth is annoying, no denying it. Beyond his personality, Cabin Fever sucked. Dumb jokes, poor plot, poor directing, blandness, and a final half an hour of perpetual fade-to-blacks. Hostel was a great jump forward, still with some poor choices, particularly with humor.
Hostel II was another nice leap forward. Roth, still a tool, was allowing less of his personality to taint the film and was turning into a decent director.
It sucks to see someone growing and improving get smashed down like this when so many talentless hacks are doing quite well within the same genre.
I'm a bit impartial, I suppose. I'd love to break into the horror movie business. Too many horror films are idiotic, lacking in gore (but trying too hard to make you cringe in other ways, gore is fun torture isn't), lacking in plot, lacking in anything artfully done.
I could live vicariously through Roth, as I didn't take any chances to actually get into the creative side of entertainment. Yes, the film isn't great, but it's at least well done. And yes, some of his shots could absolutely be considered artful, from a visual standpoint alone. It's so rare for a gore film to be able to say that.

"Hostel 2" was an ugly, mysoginistic, piece of s**t masquerading as art. Why would anyone want to see a movie about torture? This movie is torture.
If Eli Roth wants to make a statment about torture in Guantanamo Bay (as he has said in interviews), then make a movie about that. This is trash. I am glad it is tanking. It saves us from "Hostel 3."
Shame on the studio, shame on the actors. How could Roger Bart go from "The Producers" to this crap?!?

Again, the heroes were female! The survivors were female! The most intelligent character was female! And her father was on allowance from her!
How could you POSSIBLE call this misogynistic?
The only way I can come up with is you being a bit of a nitwit and being unable to distinguish between a movie having misogynistic characters and a movie being misogynistic as a whole. Of course the antagonists were misogynistc, which is why they got their fate.
Arg. Misogynistic is such an overused term. People are so incapable of looking beyond a movie full of them and a movie actually being it.

If you want to support the R rated movies by watching one of his but don't feel like going out just watch the first Hostel at your house. Just pretend all the guys are girls and you have the same damn movie.

I saw the first one and the reason I'm not seeing part II is the lack of desire to watch another snuff film. The realistic special effects of watching people die horrible deaths have gotten old to me. Now instead of admiring the effects, it is more or less watching people get murdered. Unless there is something significantly more to the plot I won't have any desire to see any of these types of movies ever again. I'm sure people who like to watch people get murdered and teenagers who have yet to get there fill of realistic murder theatre will continue to see these movies but if there are other people out there like me I think there will be a decline in viewership of this type of movie. (Maybe not though there are some sick people out there) Oh and if you think that this is just entertainment because no one is getting hurt, what are your feelings about simulated child pornography? (Personally I think they are both horrible)
