'Star Trek XI' Announcements Will Be Made at ComicCon

Things are apparently moving forward quickly with Star Trek XI -- IESB.net is reporting that at the L.A. junket for Transformers, screenwriter Roberto Orci told the roundtablers to expect some major announcements (presumably about casting) at this year's ComicCon. He said the casting process is going on right now, and that some significant decisions are going to be made soon. He also told the journalists that the film is scheduled to begin shooting in November. Up to now, there has been nothing more than educated (and uneducated) guesses about who could possibly lead this thing. Names that have been bandied about include Matt Damon, Gary Sinise, Jennifer Garner and James McAvoy, but nothing solid has developed.
The only credible info we have on the project is that it's being produced and directed by J.J. Abrams, written by Orci and Alex Kurtzman and will feature a storyline that revolves around the early days of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. We also know that it's going to be less geared toward traditional Star Trek fans than the previous film series and more towards a general, 'non-Trekker' audience. Paramount apparently has no qualms about this, given the lackluster box-office for the recent Star Trek films. The film has a tentative release date of Christmas Day, 2008. Finally, there's also been a persistent rumor that the title they want to go with is, simply, Star Trek.

I would think it would have to be "Star Trek" because it's reportedly a reboot of the series and the storyline. Not to get all Trek nerd, but it's got to happen in a different canon/continuity since it's not a straight remake. (If, for instance, they change anything about the design or the costuming, then that's a different continuity.)

Finally another Star Trek movie. I am very excited about a "prequel" movie of sorts involving young Kirk and crew. It can be done if continuity is maintained such as the classic uniforms, technology and overall feel. If the movie plans to reboot or recon current story in any way, then the fans will be up in arms. Trekkers will pick anything like that to death. And, with as much Star Trek lore out there, the producers and writers better be damn sure to research, researh, research! Please not another Enterprise...

Oh yea, what a BRILLIANT idea... we want NON Trek fans to watch so let's make a movie about the characters that TREK fans love. Since those characters produced.... um TREKKERS. Complaining that Trekkers will pick apart this movie is like expecting Beatles fans not to be upset that the reunion tour will feature Sammy Hagar singing lead vocals instead of John Lennon.
Worst of all - and the really inexcusable danger here, is that Abrams remakes Star Trek in his warped image of morality. All his shows (and his movie) feature "justified" torture. And if "Ms. Alias" herself is in the movie that just makes it even worse. They can screw with and pervert the characters of Kirk and Spock (and probably will) but if they tell the kind of stories like Alias and Lost then they will have destroyed the very essence of Star Trek. Trek is about a brighter future where humanity is enlightened. That element is the REASON that a Star Trek XI is even BEING made, for without it, there would not have BEEN 40 years of Trek and 10 other movies. Oh, yes and by the way, the comment about "lackluster box-office" returns for RECENT Trek films is off. Only the last film had less returns and if the others hadn't made money, there wouldn't have been a number 10 either. Sheesh!
Abrams and crew, think this over. IF you want "new" fans, put some effort in an create some NEW characters - leave Kirk and Spock alone because you can't possibly improve on them anyway. And don't defile Gene Roddenberry's vision - be true to the philosophy of Star Trek - or just call it something else.
