Ridley Scott to Make Monopoly Movie?
Filed under: Casting, RumorMonger, Games and Game Movies
Who knew that toy companies had agents? This is what I wondered earlier this month when Variety reported that Hasbro had switched from CAA to William Morris. Then, it was announced that the switch would lead to a live-action G.I. Joe movie and a "contemporizing" of brands such as Clue, Trivial Pursuit, Ouiji, Candy Land and Monopoly. We've already seen a great movie made out of one of those games (Clue) and the Ouiji board features in countless scary movies. Now there's word from Down Under (their source is the Sunday Times of London) that Monopoly will be made into a major motion picture, and it will actually be directed by the great Ridley Scott. Oh, and it may have a lot of big stars, as Hasbro has been promised by the agency that the movie will feature the cream of the crop of William Morris' talent. According to the article, Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst have already been offered roles. Hmmm, is today the Australian equivalent of April Fool's Day or something? I don't doubt that Monopoly could be a movie, but I do wonder if it could be an entertaining one. Despite the fact that the game is the most popular board game in the world, it is also one of the most time-consuming, most unfinished (I'm guessing) and most boring (I'd much rather play Trivial Pursuit or Candy Land). I can only imagine that Monopoly: The Movie would be about 3 hours long and filled with non-cinematic scenes involving lengthy real estate deals. Maybe, just maybe, if they can get Wilfred Brimley as Uncle Pennybags and then adapt the thimble playing piece into cute a CGI character, then I would check it out, but otherwise I just don't see it being any good. Scott, who directed Alien and Blade Runner and Gladiator and Thelma and Louise, for goodness sakes, hopefully has too much else in the pipeline to bother with directing Monopoly (he might only be a producer on the thing), such as another collaboration with Russell Crowe, this one involving Robin Hood, called Nottingham. He also has on his plate Body of Lies (aka Penetration) with Leonardo DiCaprio, a thriller called Child 44 and a western called Blood Meridian. His latest, American Gangster, opens this fall. I guess for a whole lot of money he could be wooed off these great projects for a board game adaptation, but he might want to make sure that money is real. It could be ...

Dang!
I actually had the idea several years ago of a movie (a comedy period piece) based on the board game "Monopoly" (I'd even written an outline, treatment and I figured it should open with an animated main trtle sequence (a la "Pink Panther") depicting the animated Uncle Pennybags running around the board accumulating wealth and being chased by cartoon versions of other characters in the film (a cop, another rich man, a woman and a reporter). It would end with him going to jail.
The story, set in the early 30's, would be about a wager that Pennybags makes with another prominent Atlantic City businessman, whom he despises, as to who can acquire the most wealth and property in thirty days. The only rule is that nobody could know about their bet (although a headstrong rookie reporter, who narrates the film, begins to suspect something and investigates). As the month progresses, the competition gets fiercer and fiercer, with each player actually trying to sabotage the other's endeavors (I had the idea of a scene where Pennybags unveils a new railroad but his opponent disguises himself, sneaks in and pulls the wrong switch during the ceremony causing the train to crash and completely embarass Pennybags). I also wanted there to be a young, attractive female character who was a real "gold-digger," interested in attaching herself to the richest man in town only. Since she's unsure as to which one of the two men is wealthier, she seduces both of them indvidiually and strings them along with, again, neither one knowing she's with the other (I had the image in my head of a shot in a monstage showing her spending time with both men where we see her and Pennybags in profile seated in a booth at a restaurant; the camera starts on Pennybags, he pulls out a ring and holds it out to her, the camere pans across the table to show her excited reaction, she reaches out to take it as the camera pans back across the table and, in the same shot, it has become a pearl necklace being held by the other man). Throughout the film I also wanted to have the original board playing pieces make "cameo" appearances (a show, a thimble, an iron, etc). Not making a huge deal out of them but hoping that people who pay attention might notice them.
Anyway, that was my idea. What Ridly Scott comes up with, however, I'll certainly be interested to see.

I'm producing and directing a documentary about the game of Monopoly called "Under the Boardwalk." It will feature interviews with some of the top players from around the world, as well as cover the history of the game and showcase how Monopoly has become such a huge worldwide phenomenon.
You can check out some clips from the interviews and follow our progress as filming continues at http://www.MonopolyDocumentary.com

This film will not be the first adaptation to the cinema of the famous play. In 2004 a short-measuring film "Pop up" was already carried to the screen. Hasbro had not given its authorization on the screenplay. it is possible to see it on Dailymotion:
