A Trailer For 'He Was A Quiet Man' Hits The Web

I still can't help but think of J.D from Heathers whenever I see Christian Slater. But, one glance at the poster for his latest, He Was A Quiet Man, and that sexy trench-coat wearing psychopath is long gone. He's replaced by a convincingly nebbish type clutching what looks to be a homemade bomb -- J.D would be proud. Now, the trailer for the slightly odd romantic drama has just popped up on the web. The story centers on the unassuming office drone (Slater) who stops a workplace shooting spree, only to move up the corporate ladder and find love with one of the victims. Also starring is William H. Macy, and Elisha Cuthbert as Slater's love interest. The role is a nice change for Cuthbert who has spent too much screen time with either Paris Hilton or a hook up her nose -- and I'm not sure which would be more painful. But, she seems to be branching out from her current horror fare with this film and the upcoming remake for the South Korean film My Sassy Girl.Quiet Man was written and directed by Frank Cappello, who has a relatively short resume as a director. Unfortunately, I've had some experience with his work in the relatively cheesy cop thriller No Way Back, but anyone worried that this film will be a return to those roots only has to look at the trailer for reassurance. This film seems to be aiming for a vibe that is quirky with a capital Q. So far, a release date has not been announced, but now that the trailer is making the rounds, we should hear word soon.

I was lucky enough to see this film SXSW and it's terrific. Slater is unrecognizeable and for one he leaves his Jack Nicholson impersonation at the door. Cuthbert and Macy are all great. This is a black comedy thriller drama which is the best way to describe it and is totally original and captivating.

Matt, you are first person I heard from who didn't like the film. Every other person who I know has seen it really loved it. The reviews have also been terrific so far and it has been in three festivals and has won three awards already. Not bad for a film that sucks.

I saw it at SXSW (my review is on this site, click the SXSW category) and I liked parts of it very much, but found the ending to be very disappointing. It's weird to see Slater looking so much like Milton in Office Space. Also, it's a very good role for Cuthbert -- hope you'll get the chance to see it soon, Jessica.

I saw it at the cast and crew screening in LA in March and even though the ending has changed since then, I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend the film. Frank Cappello has mastered the intermingling of comedy and dark drama to be able to keep the viewer in a constant state of not be able to anticipate what will happen next - the character development by Slater and Cuthbert are both exceptional and for sure a change of pace for both actors. The plot and story lines boarder on esoteric and require a bit more that average intelligence to follow and digest. Definately a breath of fresh air in an industry that tends to create pictures that don't require cerebral interaction by the viewing public. I highly recommend seeing it.
