Warner Bros. Will Make 'Blade Runner' Announcements at ComicCon
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, Exhibition, New on DVD, Home Entertainment
It's been known for a while now that Warner Bros. is doing something huge for the DVD release of Blade Runner: Final Cut sometime in fall 2007. The details have been left purposefully vague -- we only know that it's big enough that Joanna Cassidy had to do freakin' re-shoots for this thing, and that it will be a five-disc set that comes in a briefcase, and it will have a state-of-the-art digital print, and it may play at the Venice fest. And that Sean Young will say something crazy around the time its release. I can't even imagine how many bonus features this package will have, but to be totally honest, I hope it won't be total overkill. DVDs that comes with 99 hours of extras usually fall into the category of 'things that will never be watched by me." Anyway, here's an extra tidbit that was just thrown to me. Warner Bros. tells me to expect the Blade Runner "plans" to be announced at ComicCon. Okay. That's all I've got, folks.
As for the other issue of the day -- Blade Runner's inclusion on the Top 100 list is valid, even if it's also totally random. I mean, we're talking about a list that now includes Toy Story, people. Don't put too much stock in it. Blade Runner is such a unique and amazingly watchable movie -- I've seen it dozens of times, but never in a theater! -- that I would argue that it deserves a place in the top thirty or maybe even top twenty films of all time. It's unquestionably Ridley Scott's masterpiece, and knowing this will be his final statement on the film makes me want to get my hands on it as soon as possible. Hopefully ComicCon will answer all questions.

Hopefully, the news is not a remake or a sequel.

What's wrong with Toy Story being on the AFI top 100? It's a very entertaining film and it created a whole new genre. If it wasn't for Toy Story, we wouldn't have Ratatouille to look forward to.

Never saw Bladerunner at a theater? Poor you!
I saw it when it first came out and couldn't believe why so many of my friends in college thought that it was boring. When they released it on VHS (with extra violent scenes -- nail through hand) I bought it before I even owned a VCR! I still have that tape.
A year after it came out some genius at a movie theater at Harvard Square thought of pairing it with Mel Gibson's "Road Warrior". That was a hell of a double feature and the best four hours of dystopian entertainment I've ever experienced.

No to argue it's inclusion on the list, but "Toy Story" did not create a genre. Digital 3D animation is not a genre, but a technique.
If you decide to count the technological feat, then "Jurassic Park" is also going to have to be in the top 100 for what it did in visual EFX. And not to say those aren't enjoyable films, but should the technology used dictate what a great film is or the film as a whole? Of course, that would be up to the individual to decide, but there are some films with outstanding technological achievements that would never be considered for the top 100 ("The Phantom Menace", for example).

Rich, a remake is right out.
As for a sequel, if done properly it can be done. As in set in the same world kind of action but nothing to tie the two directly together.
As for the announcement, more than likely WB wants to do a limited theatrical run of Ridley's final cut and then put out the uber box set.

I think John (#3) and I are living a mirror life. Same here on the VHS tape and I did that double-feature on my own for a bunch of friends in college.
FWIW, I'd love to see another theatrical run of the new cut. I doubt it'll come to my little town (Little Rock AR; I'm a New Orleans refugee) but I think it's worth that.

That's great, Ralph(#5)! Knowing that I have a movie-taste doppelganger made my day (Slow news day).
