'Star Trek' Screenwriters Drop Even More Hints That New Film Won't Be For Trekkies
Filed under: Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
An article in the New York Times from this past weekend spotlights Transformers screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who confess that they originally wanted to make films like Godard's. Well, some of the movies they have worked on may feature ridiculous editing patterns, but having written films like The Island and Mission: Impossible III, they didn't quite go in the direction they'd planned. Still, one thing they keep in mind on every script they write together is that they need to have a good story first and foremost, and that story has to be accessible to audiences who may not be familiar with the particular franchise or brand they're working on. This was an important thing to keep in mind with Transformers and it will be an important thing to keep in mind with Star Trek XI, which comes out Christmas 2008. We've already heard that the movie will be a prequel, detailing Kirk and Spock's early days at the Academy, and that it will be geared toward non-Trekkies, but the Times article makes me believe that Orci, a long-time Trek fan, and Kurtzman will be able to please the die-hards while also welcoming in the newbies.
I've never been a big Star Trek fan, but I have greatly enjoyed some of the television episodes and films that didn't make me feel like a totally lost beginner. The first Trek film I ever saw was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which I loved, mostly because I was a sea-life-obsessed kid. It really helped me out that it was a present-day, Earth-based story, which could have been the plot of a non-Trek movie. And for a short time, I thought I could maybe get into the whole Trek universe. I didn't, though, and I've still never seen all the movies, but I recently watched Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for the first time in twenty years, and as much as I appreciate why it is so revered, I still felt like I was on the outside looking in. So, I'm really looking forward to what Orci and Kurtzman and director J.J. Abrams come up with for the new Star Trek movie. It may not be for Trekkies, but it probably won't turn off any of the fans, and it may just make new ones out of some of us.
We should have more on the next Star Trek movie once ComicCon begins next month. Stay tuned.

Man, the fact of the matter is that you put Star Trek in the title of the movie, the Trekkies will be there, the challenge is the wider audience. Seems like JJ Abrams and Co. are making the right decisions so far - I really like the concept for the pic. The only thing that would really raise a read flag for me is if Kirk finds out that hes a double being harvested for his organs.

If it's not intended for Trekkies, why bother with Kirk and Spock? Why not start from scratch with whole new characters if they're gearing for an audience that has for the better part of 30 years demonstrated a disinterest in the Trek universe? Sounds either mighty hypocritical or total bullshit to me. Either way, it does not augur well for the franchise.

The screenwriters of Transformers? Oh dear.
JJ Abrams? Watched M:I-III and didn't like it, badly written and directed. I liked the dodgy John Woo pic more than III.
Bring back Jonathan Frakes! (Director of the only really good Trek movie, First Contact.)

Seems like they have been trying to recapture that Star Trek 4 magic since...Star Trek 4. The closest they came was First Contact. What do those two have in common? They were GOOD. Make one that's any good, the critics will climb aboard, and bring the public with them. And the Trekkers will do their part by seeing it four times and buying the DVD. But Paramount follows First Contact with the horrible Insurrection, and the slightly less horrible Nemesis, and then acts completely puzzled by the fickleness of the fans. Anyway, I can't say that I'm confident in this latest iteration but, given this environment, kudos to Abrams for picking up the gauntlet. I'll be there opening weekend.

I'm really glad their taking a step back from the trekkies. They've taken this once great franchise (ST I-IV) and turned it into a mish-mash of technobable and aragance. The human characters are now so high and mighty with their political correctness that listening to their god awful speaches makes me want to lurch. I'd love to see this franchise go back to the original Star Treck days when the show was actually good. Trekkies be damned !!!!!!

I agree with Cath here. If you don't want to do Star Trek then don't put the name there, don't mention the characters, use your own imagination or the imagination you are able to purchase from someone with that spark and do something different. I mean, leave the franchise alone and create something yourself, don't go rape the memory and mythology that has existed before you came along. If you don't want Star Trek in a movie then do something original which gets to stand on it's own.

Just let the damn thing die already.
I gave up on Trek before Deep Space Nine even finished and I can't say that I've seen any reason to look forward to Trek XI. Not to revert to my old ways, but Spock is decades older than Kirk, so they couldn't be at the academy at the same time unless Spock is a professor of Kirk's (which, I have to admit would be kind of cool). So, they're already ignoring the original storylines--which is nothing new for a Trek series, sure, but still--as people have already said, why call it Trek then?
Generally, speaking, however, Trek hasn't been really good since Star Trek VI. The Next Gen movies were fun, but none really resonated, in my mind, anyway and when people list their favorite scifi films to me, if I hear a Trek movie, it's usually Star Trek II and NEVER a Next Gen movie.
All right, fanboy-mode disengaged.
Just put a bullet between the eyes of this franchise and take a chance on a new idea, Paramount!!

Please bring back the TNG actors and quit focusing on this prequel crap! I'm so dissappointed in Paramount! I hate to say it, but I'm afraid that Star Trek XI will kill the franchise. I agree with the commenter that said the only good movie was First Contact with Frakes directing. It's too bad that Paramount is so arrogant and can't go with the winning combination that they had in First Contact. I'm at the point of boycotting all of Paramount movies in the future . . . Paramount has given us losers like Tom Cruise.

I agree with Cath. Why use Kirk & Spock if you aren't making something for trekkies? The reason is because they can't think of anything and so they are riding the "brand" of Kirk & Spock to compensate.
I'm aways amazed at how uncreative these screenwriters are in Hollywood, considering the high income they receive. If you get paid that much money, you should be able to deliver.

This is terribly disappointing. I mean, if you're not aiming to please the Trek fans, do you think as much as paramount has been grasping at straws with the franchise, that they're somehow going to be able to load on all these fans with the new movie that supposedly goes from being a "love letter to the fans" to being "not for trekkies". Honestly, this is some of the worst news since I heard the Plot for "Nemesis". I mean, it still is to early to tell since we don't even have a finalized plot yet, but I think that prequel fever is over, and if studios continue to push them as the only way to try and resurrect a dying franchise, they will fail miserably. It'll be so sad if Star Trek starts being gets to he point where it's as bad as Star Wars.

I think they should do more market research or something when making movies, All the buzz I seem to see about this new star trek movie is bloody negative! And I would have to agree with most of it, A prequel will only destroy the franchise, Call into question all that has come before and will probably be a big mess that I will probably go and see but will most likely cringe throughout.
