Sam Raimi Wants Six Villains for 'Spider-Man 4'
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
As much as we planned and waited for a wham-bam spider-action trilogy with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise, it started to become inevitable that three wouldn't be enough. The films bring in way too much money for the studio to wipe their hands, say "that was fun" and head to the horizon. Of course, there's been all sorts of talk about the three musketeers -- Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst -- and how none wants to be involved if the others aren't. "It would be really hard for me to make a movie without Tobey and Kirsten playing the two leads," Raimi stated, hopefully meaning just in the Spidey universe, and not in general. Yet, he's still looking forward and scheming up sequels, which may have him at the helm, or not.As Raimi sees the next installment, according to MTV: "I would love to see Electro, Vulture, maybe the Sinister Six as a team." Now, I'm completely Spidey-dumb beyond the originals, but luckily, the Internet provides quick geek research. The original Sinister Six was a collection of supervillains brought together by Doc Ock to bring Spider-Man down. He collected: the Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio and Sandman. So, that means bringing two of the villains back for more, and adding a ton of new ones as well. (Or, any one of the other incarnates of the group.) And that, frankly, seems a bit rash. After all of the feedback saying that 3 villains was a bit much for one film, he wants to double it? Maybe in a few films, after introducing the other evil characters, but why the over-kill? But that's not all - Raimi is also anxious to see Dr. Curt Connors get his time as The Lizard: "I love Dylan Baker as a person, and I really like the character he is developing." So, that means dipping into The Sinister Twelve. Oh, the villains never end.
And just how many sequels will it take for the films to tank? I think we all agree that the first was the best? I actually haven't seen 3 yet, because I fear that I expect too much and I'm not sure that I'm ready for the potential disappointment. That, and I think Dunst singing might give me a rash. Regardless, I'm even further apprehensive due to how much I utterly loathed the final Pirates (and I really liked the other two). Is 3 really worth it, and even more importantly with the third wrapped -- would 6 villains fly, or would they plummet to fiery death?

It is Ben. The 2nd Spiderman was clearly better than the first.
And I thought the final Pirates was better than the 2nd one. So I'm just disagreeing all over the place with this blogger. Ah well.

I'm pretty sure we all agree that the 2nd one is best.

The Sinister Six is a bit of a catch-all name for any team of Spider-man villains that number more then five and less then seven. So, it could potentially only mean introducing 2-3 new villains past The Lizard.
I think it could be interesting as long as we don't have to slog through a sub-plot per villain and just have a few of them show up for the fight.

Well, no. Because, last we saw, both Goblins, Venom and Doc Ock died in the films. So, unless he indulges in some serious retro-engineering on the plot, they can't be used.
Of course, part of the problem with 3 was the amount of retro-plotting, so I guess we can't discount the possibility.

I do not agree: the second was by far the best one of the three. From people I've talked to there's general agreement on that.

People seem really concerned about the number of villains, but I think the success of the multi-villain approach depends much more on the script's logic than on just the number.
If you consider Batman Begins, the film managed to tell an origin story, while also having Batman deal with Ra's Al Ghul, The Scarecrow, Carmine Falcone, corrupt police, escaped prisoners, and the corrupt CEO of Wayne Enterprises. It worked because the puzzle pieces made sense together. I can't say the same for Sandman and Venom. The characters had no reason to be in the same movie together and both ended up being somewhat ineffective.

Yeah, you're on crack. The second one was the only truly decent movie of the three.

Wait, so the person covering Spider-Man for cinematical thinks the first one was the best and hasn't even seen the third one? How does any of that make sense?

How are the spider-man critics when believe the first was the best, when the second was, and complains 3 villians were too much. You do not have to tell the story of every villian if in a group
and the group is already a team and not a bunch
thrown together for a battle's sake.As for spider-
man 3, if you cut from the "John Travolta" strutting
to the last of the bar scene, then can at least seem
acceptable.

Oh my god, has Sam Raimi gone crazy?! SIX villians in one movie?!?!?!? That's way too much, you all have to admit. Oh, and, uh......as for the "Which movie is better" question.....Spider-Man #1 sucked big-time compared to the other two. And to me, #2 was awesome, but #3 was much better. Special Effects were better, Peter seemed more like a hero, and the choice of villians was great. The whole "black-suit, symbiote, Venom" thing was alot cooler to me in the comics than some idiot with metal Skill Crane claws stuck to his back! I still remain strong with my arguement, that it should be Carnage, and Carnage only.

The first two spiderman movies were about equal. Both good. The 3rd had great special effects. But I am tired of Hollywood making of small origin stories for major characters as Venom. Venom should have been introduced at the end of the movie as Eddie Brock, when he got the symboite. The main movie should have been about Sandman and Goblin. Then spidey 4 could have been about Venom and his replicating. Introduce the psychotic serial killer, which would become Carnage. Of course you could have all of Venom's progeny, as they were all killed in the series anyways, as they were not as powerful. Spidey could take out one at a time.
But he is going to make it into a First Batman series, bunch of villans no real plot, and a bunch of fighting. I will wait for the Incredible Hulk movie, where people will want to see smash and bash.
Maybe he should just introduce villans in the news, and leave it open for many sequels. lets do Kingpin, buying up lots of real estate. or show silvermane hiring Tombstone to find him the anciet tablet to make himself immortal. We just need a little, not overkill. Or let peter parker meet bobby drake in college and they become roomates, similar the the spider friends. Now he can have help defeating maybe 3 bad guys at once. and it leaves open a chance for a spider friends franchise.
These directors need to learn the KISS method. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.
in part 3 as long as sandman keeps away from water, he will kick spidermans but, unless spidey has some fire or chemicals with him.
Best idea introduce the lizard, he can bring sandman, but lets add hydroman. in the battle of spidey vs. sandman, he can dissolve sandman with a fire hydrant, he floats into the sewer, and combines with hydroman as he is escaping from a robbery, and we will have the mudmonster that was once a villan in the series.
They change this movies from the animation and comics, who knows what we will get.
