J.J. Abrams and the 'Cloverfield' Debate
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Fandom, Movie Marketing
We received a number of emails yesterday from people who had witnessed a mysterious trailer playing in front of Transformers press screenings. Not only is it completely bizarre to see any kind of advertisement before a press screening (in all my time doing this, I've never once watched a trailer at this sort of screening), but the film itself is one no one had heard a thing about. Well, that's a lie -- we have heard about Cloverfield before. Originally, word began leaking out of Hollywood that J.J. Abrams was producing a top secret project named Cloverfield, and that the film had already gone into production. Some folks immediately speculated that Stephen King's The Dark Tower was secretly filming under the name Cloverfield (you'll remember that J.J. Abrams became involved in that adaptation not long ago) -- one guy even started a blog claiming to be an actor in The Dark Tower, and confirmed that it was being filmed under the name Cloverfield. Well that was bogus; King's own assistant even commented here telling us so.
So what is Cloverfield? Cinematical's own Scott Weinberg attended one of the aforementioned Transformers screenings, and here's what he had to say about the trailer: "We open with a bunch of teens partying. Apparently one of 'em is leaving town tomorrow and everyone's kind of bittersweet about it. Then they hear a giant ruckus and head outside to see a massive explosion in the distance. Out on the streets people are running around all panicky-like. Then the head of the Statue of Liberty lands in the middle of the street and the date of January 18, 2008, pops up. Oh, and it's all done with handheld video cameras. Basically The Blair Witch Project meets the Godzilla remake ... which means I can't wait to see it." When I asked Scott what he thought the film was about, he replied: "I'm told it's a monster movie." I immediately wondered whether it was a remake of The Host, but both Scott and I felt that would be an insanely quick turnaround if true. However, we did both agree that Cloverfield is most likely a fake title. So what's the real title? Will J.J. Abrams unveil it at ComicCon? And is this not a clever way to market a film, or what?

It's not the remake of THE HOST. I heard from the mouth of a production exec at Universal that they're still working on the script for that remake, which will likely take place in the pacific northwest and involve a nuclear reactor that falls into a river and creates a monster out of a regular creature.

Sounds interesting...could it possibly be Lost related...at one point the lost producers had mentioned the possibility of a Lost movie as a tie-in to the final of the series...if that were the case it would be intersting....

I believe that all the rumors of it being just a "big monster movie" are bs. JJ Abrams is very clever and meticulous in planning, and this is no exception.
I agree with Danlos that this is LOST related. It would fit Abrams M.O. seeing as how he put "The Hanso Foundation" into the credits of Mission Impossible 3. Not to mention the fact that they're delaying the next season of LOST until the beginning of next year. Hmmm, isn't that right around the date that was shown on the trailer? Coincidence? With Abrams at the wheel, I think not.
Finally, to me, the sound of the "monster" in the teaser was eerily similar to the sounds of "the monster" on LOST.
In my opinion, "Cloverfield" is just clever media spin to conceal something that will put LOST permanently on map. (no pun intended)
Criticism welcomed, and please point out anything you disagree with me on.
Sincerely,

I thought, and this may be a long shot, that this could possibly be the sequal that was never made for the american godzilla movie and although the first one didnt deserve the godzilla name it alone was a good movie as i recall the first one ended all kinds of wide open

As an avid LOST fanatic, That of course was the first thing I thought of when seeing this trailer! The "monster" sounds just like our old friend "smokey" on Lost. You never see it except for the ball of fire in coming out of the city. It almost looks like a volcano erupting in the middle of manhattan...and YES, it tears the head off of the statue of liberty! I say Lost tie-in, just like the "Bad Twin" book. They never reveal the title or anything in the trailer...just JJ Abrams and Bad Robot, his production company that...surprise...makes Lost.

I saw the special showing of Transformers last night and while that movie was amazing i couldn't stop thinking about the "no title" trailer. I'm a huge lost fan and as soon as i saw jj abrams name i turned to my boyfriend and started rambling about it being a lost movie. The sound that comes with the tremors is identical to the sound of the lost monster. The way season 3 left us makes this trailor seem like its a definate possibilty of a lost tie in.

I would certainly hope this movie has nothing to do with LOST as that show went down the crapper after season one. It would be unfortunate if it was because like the show, it started off so well and showed such promise, only to disappoint.

You know, I didn't think of it being a Lost tie-in at the time, but, after reading all of your comments....sure, why not Lost?
Maybe, just maybe that would explain the giant four toed foot on the Island?

Everywhere I've read I've noticed that people assume the date at the end of the trailer '1-18-08' is a release date.
But upon further inspection I've come to realize, this date is a setting. A time for this movie to take place.

Okay, folks. Listen up! If you listen carefully to the trailer you hear somebody in the crowd yell something like "Look, its a lion, its huge!" A lion? AND you know there was an allusion to Japan at the party. AND you know that it was the last preview RIGHT BEFORE Transformers began. Lion? Japan? Transformers related? Hello! VOLTRON!!!!

I think maybe you heard that wrong VinDogg. The guy says "It's alive" not "It's a lion" as far as I can tell. I've seen Transformers twice already and I listened very closely to everything the second time, it's pretty clear. If it was Voltron, why would he be destroying NYC?

Who said he was destroying NYC? What was shown in the trailer could have been the bad guy, right? Anyways, I don't really believe that its Voltron. I have another lead. During the party scene the Wolfmother song "Joker and the Thief" is distinctly heard. Well, I looked at the lyrics and a line goes "standing in a field of CLOVER" And the album art on the inside depicts a giant iguana/lizard. This, therefore, is proof for my initial guess- GODZILLA! I know it sounds far-fetched but J.J. Abrams loves for his viewers to find clues like that. I know because he does the same thing with Lost.

Ok, now I think you may be onto something. Godzilla was of course the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw this, but I dismissed it right away. I agree with you that the song may shed some light, but tying it into Godzilla because of the album art is a stretch. For now, I'll go with it...it's the best lead so far. On the other hand, the fact that Wolfmother is the artist playing in the background does intrigue me. If I am not mistaken, Japanese lore refers to "mother earth" as a wolf. Most recently there was a great example of this in the PS2 game Okami. According to this article http://www.popworld.com/pages/artist?7DD120BE-A6BD-4E04-82FA-0BD80609F186
The band states the name means "Childern born of the Beast" so maybe we're looking at some nature's wrath type of story here. This also would support your Godzilla theory.

I absoultely have to agree with VinDogg at the end here... unfortunately Cligga was correct, what you hear is "It's Alive! It's Huge!" You could clearly make that out when they jump out off the steps of the buidling before the SOL head is thrown down the street.
I know nothing about LOST, but I really feel this is tied in some form or fashion to Godzilla and another sequel or remake. Godzilla is still one of the most profitable franchises in world history and a GOOD remake or something to that nature with this kind of 'Blair Witch' feel would be second to none. I like the idea that layer put out there for us... this is probably the BEST marketing I have ever seen...bravo Bad Robot and J.J. Abrams for getting everyone talking about something we know nothing about.

Ready folks? NOT a Lost movie.
I work at Universal, and from what I've heard, it'll be a big monster romp-around. Hopefully, will be as cool as it sounds.
It looked cool as hell yesterday along with Nicole Kidman's "The Invasion" that looked like a direct copy of a Philip K. Dick story (possibly by the same name, if I remember correctly).
