Review: Transformers -- Scott's Review

If Michael Bay's intention was to make a Transformers movie that would have the established fans peeing in their pants and clapping with nerdly glee, he's succeeded in fine form. If, however, Michael Bay's intention was to create an accessible sci-fi adventure movie that could bring in moviegoers who believe a "transformer" is something you stick into your fuse box ... he's failed pretty miserably. Hitting the screens with all the subtlety of a 50-piece drum set thrown down an eternal flight of stairs, Transformers should have been bankrolled by the fine people of Tylenol: Twelve random minutes of the flick are enough to give you a brain-bruising migraine.
But loud and mindless I can handle. Lord knows I'm a fan of enough empty vessels like Transformers. (Indeed, I'm even a Bay supporter sometimes. I adore The Rock, I consider Armageddon a blissfully guilty pleasure, and I'm one of the few who bothered to find some good things in The Island. The less said about Pearl Harbor and Bad Boys 2 ... the better.) The main problem (among many) with this massively moronic Transformers flick is that for all its sound and fury ... there's simply that nothing there. One can only sit through so many sequences in which giant animated dolls throw each other across the street before he wonders "Do I even care who wins this fight? And which one's the good guy again? I think he had blue stripes."
The plot is an amalgam of material found in the cartoon, the animated film and the comic book series, although all you really need to know is this: Lots of giant robots are searching for an ancient artifact that's hidden somewhere on Earth. Some of the robots like humans; others do not. Chases and explosions ensue. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Basically, for a mindless action movie, Transformers sure does spin its wheels before getting to the good stuff -- and then once the good stuff arrives you'll need a slo-mo button to figure out what the hell's going on. Except, of course, if you were raised on the Transformers cartoon, toys, comic books and video games. Then you'll not only know what's going on ... you'll know what's coming next. (And not necessarily in a good way.) Plus I find it very ironic (and more than a little sad) that the most entertaining component of the film is not the million-dollar robots or the elaborately chaotic action scenes: It's actually character actor John Turturro, whose services probably cost less than one CGI technician.
A very amusing Shia LaBeouf plays Sam Witwicky, a high school junior who desperately wants his own car. (He also has a large chunk of dreary back-story that deals with his late grandfather's arctic discovery ... a superfluous plot thread that adds little to the movie and actually vanishes from the plot entirely.) Sam's dad buys him a classic Camaro -- a vehicle that also happens to be a giant alien robot from another world. Then we get a whole bunch of arid nothingness that deals with a young hottie (Megan Fox), a clueless Secretary of Defense (Jon Voight), a bland pair of soldiers (Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson), a hacker duo as unconvincing as they are uninteresting (Anthony Anderson and Rachael Taylor), and a wild-eyed secret agent (John Turturro) before we can get down to business: The action. And when it's all said and done, Transformers might deliver the action in quantity, but most definitely not in quality.
Written poorly and edited together in even worse fashion, the movie leaps around from place to place and character to character with not only a lack of logic, but practically contempt for the way a story is told. The interesting characters simply vanish for large periods, but the bland ones stay front and center. The narrative lurches forward in tiny dribs and drabs ... but only to make way for a generally unimpressive series of action set pieces. Plot threads and side characters are simply forgotten about. The movie is fetishistic about cars and weapons and sexy underage women, but it never once connects on a human level. I've played video games in which you somehow care about the characters -- something this movie never once allows you to do. Essentially it's Independence Day meets the Godzilla remake, only with giant boring robots instead of boring aliens or boring monsters. Flat, loud, flashy spectacle that's been fine-tuned and sanded down to appeal to the widest global audience possible. All in all, pretty generic.
But I can't lie: The final 20-some minutes of Transformers is all but packed to the robotic rafters with high-end mega-mayhem. The entire third act is practically one big massive action scene. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to the individual viewer, but I was thrilled to see this lumbering mass exhibit even half a pulse by that point. But Bay and his screenwriters clearly have no interest in the human side of the equation, which explains why even the quiet moments of Transformers feel vaguely "cyborg" in nature. When you're trying to wedge some actual human emotion into a flick that's not much more than the 15th permutation of a glorified toy advertisement, you're better off doing it with some sincerity -- or not bothering at all. The Incredibles has more heart and soul than Transformers, and while I certainly wouldn't walk into a movie like this looking for deep and soulful emotion, I didn't expect a flick that felt like it was MADE by robots.

My only reason for posting this is the faint hope that SOME parent MAY read this before taking their young child to see this movie. The rating is PG13 and I was prepared for all of the violence that my 8 year old would see in this movie. I was NOT however, prepared for dialog about masturbation and mating.
The dialog was unnecessary, added nothing valuable to the movie or the outcome and wouldn't have been missed at all if left out.
Parents beware!

I saw the movie lastnight and this is one of the BEST movies of the summer. Guys you forget that this is only a movie and not a life altering experience so stop whining like a "bee-otch" (if you watched the movie you know where that comes from) and stop ruining it for everyone that hasnt seen it. Keep an open mind about it, for all the nay-sayers on this blog, stop being a bunch of pussies... this is only a movie, Optimus rules.

Those are all very valid questions, but they all have good answers. If they kept bumble bee a VW beetle you'd be interested in him for all of five seconds. probably less. and even though the transformers come to life through radiation i don't think any stretch of the imagination would allow for a 2 story megatron to transform into a handgun, mostly wielded by starscream.
i've seen it and the only complaint i have is the 'men in black' acting style of everyone from sector seven.
bay said it best, compare this to the original and realize how much better it is just by being live action.

This is NOT a real Transformers movie.
Here's my take about the movie which I felt was nothing more than a commercial film for the mass market:

I loveddddddddddddddddddddddd that movie. Just go see flippin movie. It was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be. For those of you that spit the negative....GO make a better movie I doubt that you could! I have almost every movie Michael Bay has had his hands on. While this movie does not have you as far on the edge of your seat as Armageddon...your pretty damn close. I liked the simple plot sometimes you nay-sayers when you put too much into it you loose the real reason for the movie...ACTION!!! If you liked/loved Transformers the TV show and are a fan of Michael Bay you will love this movie. Pay no attention to those who put too much into plot and action (or lack there of) they are like the Wizard, just the man behind the curtain that dont know s**^t!

Simply put, this movie is AWESOME! Yes, it's loud. So what? Hello! It's an ACTION movie. It's no louder that any of Die Hard films. It works because Michael Bay gets us to actually CARE about the Autobots and there mission to save the Earth. You can't but help to actually root for them as if they truly exist. I sat in a packed house tonight and everyone in the theatre actually cheered throughout the entire fim. It was spectacular. See the film. You won't be disappointed. People, it's MINDLESS fun. Lighten up. The keyword: FUN!!!

Wow, this is a terrible review! I can hardly believe we even saw the same movie! I'll admit, I am a Transformers fanboy, and I went to see this movie with my wife (who hates the Transformers cartoons and all my toys) and we both walked out and absolutely loved the movie! She, who knew nothing about Transformers, was able to follow the storyline fine and enjoyed the movie! You state that Sam Witwickys backstory wasn't brought up again in the movie? The movie is about his backstory that he tells in class! You get to see his grandfather in the arctic, you get to see him discover Megatron, the Autobots needed the grandfathers glasses for help, but not only that, the giant iceman that his grandfather found (Megatron) was a key piece of the movie! Without Sam Witwickys background story, you'd have giant robots on the face of earth with no reason at all!
I also think that you can connect with some of the characters, theres Sam whos trying to get a car and find himself a girlfriend and is trying his hardest with Mikaela, theres Sergeant Lennox whos a U.S. soldier who wants to get home to his baby girl for the first time (being a father in 2 months, I can relate to him from the getgo). I can even go on with a couple other examples if need be.
As far as the story is told, it is constantly progressing and is progressing in a good and understandable way, starting with the first Deception attack, then following along Sams storyline and with the governments progress with trying to find out what this terroristic threat is, and with all 3 chains coming together for a conclusion. As I said this was done superbly with even my wife loving the movie!
Lastly I believe there was a lot of emotion in the movie, from the soldiers who can't wait to get home on leave, to Bobby Bolivia's comic relief in the used car lot, to Sam trying to go to the party with his friend, and to Sam trying to pickup on Mikaela. Even between Bumblebee and Sam there was a connection and Mikaela took the time to help Bumblebee after he was injured, so that goes to show there was emotion between not only the human parts, but the robots aswell.

This movie sucked! Plain and simple. I love to analyze movies and try not to hate. I actually went to this one with that mantra stated above "Must not think." But it didn't matter.
All of the stupid one liners, the out of character autobots, and just scene after scene just put together without rhyme or reason just to show scenes. Not one complete storyline and not thought about or through at all.
What I wanted to see was what we remember from our childhood and that is simply Autobots vs. Decepticons. Not army guys vs. Decepticons, and surely not army guys vs. Autobots.
Here's a question I have though......WHY take a giant evil looking robot found frozen in the arctic, and move him to an area that is desert? And then surround him with a tourist attraction? Was Area 51 filled with other aliens?
Another question......high heat armor piercing shells? How about an electromagnet or an EMP? I don't care what kind of electronic robot they are, those will probably do the trick....yet they never even considered it. They wanted to freeze them. I guess they knew that fire extinguishers would take care of the problem.
Crappy movie, and hopefully if there is a sequel, they'll get a better writer. But remember, the original Transformers cartoon was just a commercial for the toys, could we expect much more from this movie?

There are a lot of legitimate criticisms to this movie, and yet, I can't help but think this was really the best we could hope for. It's a movie based on a cartoon/comic that was made specifically to sell toys. What more did you expect?
I, for one, loved every minute of it. Here's hoping for a sequel. . . one that focuses its attention where it should be: The Transformers.

I haven't seen the movie yet but my little brother saw it without me. He said its awesome. I said that without seeing it. I like action movies for action. I don't care about plot. I don't care about people. I don't care if its 2+ freakin hours long. I DO care about robots, explosions, firefights, fist fights, jet fights, and any combination of the aforementioned. If the Transformers is even half of what I see in the trailers, I'll definitely be a happy camper.

I just got home from seeing the movie and I thought it was awesome. It was exactly what I expected from Michael Bay. I didn't think it was too loud or that the action scenes were confusing..I honestly don't know what you're saying there. I am 38 and remember watching the original. I think that they did a great job with the CGI and everything else. Shea rocks, been watching him since Even Stevens and it was great to see Josh Duhamel in a good role..(we forgive him for touristas, right?)
I have been working in the movie industry off and on since 1986 and it just seems to me that most people forget what movies are really about and that's entertainment. Pure and simple.
Now don't get me wrong, I love thought provoking movies just as much as the next person. However, don't complain that a movie is not "intelligent" enough when it is marketed as entertainment not a "avant garde critics choice".

Somebody tell scott his review makes no sense....if you didn't grow up on transformers you shouldn't be writing a review on it first and foremost. Second this was the best movie I have seen in my 28 years that was based on on a childhood classic, from start to finish this movie was solid...come on the original optimus prime voice over.....this is just one of the small details someone who grew up on the cartoon would only appreciate. So the bottom line is this...if you have a good transformers background you will pay to watch this movie over and over but if you think you can go into this movie blind and enjoy it well your review will sound just as stupid as scott's.

I agree with Los, this was an amazing movie. If you really came into that movie excepting Annie Hall, then get yourself checked out. This was for the action. I love this movie, as I went in just to see what they were able to do with the CGI and came out fulfilled with more then just that.

This movie was HOT!!! Plain and simple. It has been a long time since a movie this good has come out. Hands down to Michael Bay. He knows his Sh*t. This movie was better than expected. And the Camero was sexy! I guess GM has to be happy. And Optimus choked me up a bit when he came out and his line in the end. Just brought back old memories.

I just saw this movie today and I thought it was the best. I love the humor and the scene about the girl and guy that was added. I thought it brought more to the movie and a reason why the autobots were there to protect. This movie is a must see for all who enjoyed the cartoon transformer and for those who want the excitement of enjoying the transformers. Good job to producers!!!! It is a hit!!!
