Review: Transformers -- Scott's Review

If Michael Bay's intention was to make a Transformers movie that would have the established fans peeing in their pants and clapping with nerdly glee, he's succeeded in fine form. If, however, Michael Bay's intention was to create an accessible sci-fi adventure movie that could bring in moviegoers who believe a "transformer" is something you stick into your fuse box ... he's failed pretty miserably. Hitting the screens with all the subtlety of a 50-piece drum set thrown down an eternal flight of stairs, Transformers should have been bankrolled by the fine people of Tylenol: Twelve random minutes of the flick are enough to give you a brain-bruising migraine.
But loud and mindless I can handle. Lord knows I'm a fan of enough empty vessels like Transformers. (Indeed, I'm even a Bay supporter sometimes. I adore The Rock, I consider Armageddon a blissfully guilty pleasure, and I'm one of the few who bothered to find some good things in The Island. The less said about Pearl Harbor and Bad Boys 2 ... the better.) The main problem (among many) with this massively moronic Transformers flick is that for all its sound and fury ... there's simply that nothing there. One can only sit through so many sequences in which giant animated dolls throw each other across the street before he wonders "Do I even care who wins this fight? And which one's the good guy again? I think he had blue stripes."
The plot is an amalgam of material found in the cartoon, the animated film and the comic book series, although all you really need to know is this: Lots of giant robots are searching for an ancient artifact that's hidden somewhere on Earth. Some of the robots like humans; others do not. Chases and explosions ensue. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Basically, for a mindless action movie, Transformers sure does spin its wheels before getting to the good stuff -- and then once the good stuff arrives you'll need a slo-mo button to figure out what the hell's going on. Except, of course, if you were raised on the Transformers cartoon, toys, comic books and video games. Then you'll not only know what's going on ... you'll know what's coming next. (And not necessarily in a good way.) Plus I find it very ironic (and more than a little sad) that the most entertaining component of the film is not the million-dollar robots or the elaborately chaotic action scenes: It's actually character actor John Turturro, whose services probably cost less than one CGI technician.
A very amusing Shia LaBeouf plays Sam Witwicky, a high school junior who desperately wants his own car. (He also has a large chunk of dreary back-story that deals with his late grandfather's arctic discovery ... a superfluous plot thread that adds little to the movie and actually vanishes from the plot entirely.) Sam's dad buys him a classic Camaro -- a vehicle that also happens to be a giant alien robot from another world. Then we get a whole bunch of arid nothingness that deals with a young hottie (Megan Fox), a clueless Secretary of Defense (Jon Voight), a bland pair of soldiers (Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson), a hacker duo as unconvincing as they are uninteresting (Anthony Anderson and Rachael Taylor), and a wild-eyed secret agent (John Turturro) before we can get down to business: The action. And when it's all said and done, Transformers might deliver the action in quantity, but most definitely not in quality.
Written poorly and edited together in even worse fashion, the movie leaps around from place to place and character to character with not only a lack of logic, but practically contempt for the way a story is told. The interesting characters simply vanish for large periods, but the bland ones stay front and center. The narrative lurches forward in tiny dribs and drabs ... but only to make way for a generally unimpressive series of action set pieces. Plot threads and side characters are simply forgotten about. The movie is fetishistic about cars and weapons and sexy underage women, but it never once connects on a human level. I've played video games in which you somehow care about the characters -- something this movie never once allows you to do. Essentially it's Independence Day meets the Godzilla remake, only with giant boring robots instead of boring aliens or boring monsters. Flat, loud, flashy spectacle that's been fine-tuned and sanded down to appeal to the widest global audience possible. All in all, pretty generic.
But I can't lie: The final 20-some minutes of Transformers is all but packed to the robotic rafters with high-end mega-mayhem. The entire third act is practically one big massive action scene. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to the individual viewer, but I was thrilled to see this lumbering mass exhibit even half a pulse by that point. But Bay and his screenwriters clearly have no interest in the human side of the equation, which explains why even the quiet moments of Transformers feel vaguely "cyborg" in nature. When you're trying to wedge some actual human emotion into a flick that's not much more than the 15th permutation of a glorified toy advertisement, you're better off doing it with some sincerity -- or not bothering at all. The Incredibles has more heart and soul than Transformers, and while I certainly wouldn't walk into a movie like this looking for deep and soulful emotion, I didn't expect a flick that felt like it was MADE by robots.

Movie wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. My thoughts:
1. Too many human characters. They could have easily cut out the 2 hackers for example.
2. Camera was too close to the action. Take a step back, and it would have been better (plus less nauseating to those with motion sickness problems). Reminded me of Bourne Supremacy in that regards.
3. Transformation of the robots looked fake. They had a lot of motion during the transformation, but I would have prefered a simpler transformation, like you would do when you actually had the action figures. Instead, you see a lot of busy motion, and wa-la you have transformed from robot to vehicle or back.
4. It was difficult to figure out who were the good robots and the bad robots in the final fight.
5. Why was Optimus Prime so weak? Before going into the final fight with Megatron, it would have been nice to have seen him slam and demolish one of the Decepticons to prove that he was also a powerful robot. In fact, I would have loved to see his truck hit just about anything. Instead, he always transformed back into a robot, and looked like the rest of the robots making mayhem.

This was a remarkably enjoyable movie for the whole family. We have so many 'comic book' stories going to the big screen these days it almost gets sickening, but after having read the entire Transformers collection in my youth, and seeing the animated cartoons, and owning the first cartoon movie on DVD, I really think this one was written with a lot of insight into what would gracefully bridge the old to new. I read an earlier comment suggesting that the characters were not all true to their 'originals'. THat was a inconsequential difference that prevented it from being a mindnumbing photocopy of the original story. If you noticed, for example, Bumblebee was at the used car lot next to a yellow VW beetle, and the kid 'almost' turned away to look at it. Anyway, the intense battle scenes were not continuous, and gave a lot of time for character development. I find it interesting that some people are commenting that the boy has too much importance to the plot, and yet if you think about it, the movie would be pretty bland if there were not 'humans' central to the storyline. I think it was a truly outstanging movie, different enough to be exciting, yet similiar enough to the 'originals' to bring back some warm fuzzies. In trying to be a balanced critic, I would say that the areas where it could be improved: intergalactic space battles would be nice, lose the American Pie moment with the parents, add spend some more time helping people understand all the different 'transformer characters.' I would not say this movie seemed long in the least bit - very well made.

Scott, you really need to change your profession, because your review is so off-base it is literally insulting! I think 90% of the others commenting here would agree with me. Anyone on the fence about seeing this movie because of Scott's poor excuse of a review, go see it...and then post your comments.

This 50 year old woman laughed out loud, felt sad at times, was engrossed in the story, amazed at the special effects and ultimately was completely entertained. Isn't that the whole point of a movie --- to be entertained? My entire family enjoyed it and we have already made plans to see it again tomorrow night!! And yes, I already have plans to purchase transformers for my young great-nephews. Who knows, I may just keep one for myself!

Just from the fact he'll call adults who were around 8 years old who watched these cartoons "nerds" is reason alone to see he's an idiot.. Movie was great . Guess im a 30 year old nerd, who felt the nostalgia of 84.

If you're going into this movie with lofty expectations you probably will be disappointed. I was personally terrified of this movie before seeing it.
I was pleasantly surprised at the job Michael Bay did. One thing that people easily forget is how deep the legacy of the transformers goes (you know this to be true if you're ANY kind of a real fan), and that is HARD to do it justice in a single film.
For what its worth, there was enough of a new spin mixed with the old 80's spirit to generate a likable film. Yeah its kinda hard to follow, but there was a lot of ground to cover.
Best piece of advice I can give to anyone is don't go into the movie to be critical. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Wonder what movie Scott was watching...
Probably liked Jason X. They'll let anyone review a movie it seems. This review is as mindless as he claims the movie is.
Excellent flick. Best movie I've seen in about a decade. Dreamworks owned the hell out of this movie.

Ok, sure, I'll bow to the fact that it does indeed jump around, and a bit of the humor was childish, but really, I don't see what all the fussing and moaning is about.
People say: "Its a summer action flick, what do you expect?"
I say: " Its the TRANSFORMERS, what do you expect"?
Action scenes? Damn good. Not matter how long, or how short they are, they always come off well, and hell, if there isn't variety in those action scenes. They DO spice it up. Great choreography in the bot battles doesn't hurt either.
I should also add that the Transforming aspect is never over played. Yeah, we see em transform, and once or twice its close up, but over all, it doesn't weigh the movie down, and I have to give em props for doing so. Its about the action scenes. They deliver.
CGI? Like I even have to say a thing. The CGI-Live Action meshing is the best to date, bar none. It looks perfect. The Attention to detail is out of this world, and it makes me laugh at the old cartoon....Well, any of the cartoons, actually.
This is, however, the best parxt of the film. The CGI. But, that in it self is worth going to see on the big screen. Its something to behold.
Story? Ok, so you got the whole first hour devoted to characters. Thats a great thing, in my opinion. It would have been easy as all get out to just have giant robots smashing each other from start to finish. But, they didn't. They took time to toss in some good laughs, and some character moments. Is it going to win them an Oscar? Nope, but it makes the rest of the film work all the more better.
Oh, in case, for what ever reason, people are STILL wondering about the whole PG-13 deal. There IS death, human and robot alike. No gore, but this movie doesn't pull too many punches. Rest assured, this isn't for the tiny tike's.
When I mention the fact that it IS a Transformers movie, and not, oh, lets say, Requiem For a Dream. I mean this; Look at the cartoon, look at the comic books. Now tell me, do you think war between a race of Giant transforming robots is the place for a deep, thought provoking plot, wrought with politics, and philosophy? Would this be the place for characters and a story that would make you misty and your heart ache?
Really? You think so? Well, thats your opinion, heres mine.
This is what Transformers is. An Action and eye candy fest. Its excellent in both aspects. I'm not complaining.
Could it have been better, sure, allot better, yeah, why not? Is it awful, NOPE.
This long time fan is pleased.

And to the critic that put this movie down
All I can say, this is the only movie I notice that most people who whatch it really wants to see it over and over again. First I notice it when I watch in my province. All of my friends where planning to watch it again eventhough the ticket was expensive than usual. Then when I left and went back to work in a different city. My office mate discussed the movie & invited me to watch again. I also chat w/ my friend who works in australia and said he watch the movie 3 times. And as I browse all the reviews about Transformer, my god, Im not the only one experiencing the urge to WATCH the movie again!!!! wowwwww This proves that this will be one box office hit movie of 2007.
Must see movie, brings that good old memories back
whewww what a blast!!!!!

I am a 47 year old mom, who went to see this movie alone, before I took my 8 and 10 year old sons. I loved it! One issue that no one mentions is that the toys, the cartoon, and the Kids meals are all aimed at kids! So, I for one am glad that they made the storyline easy to understand. With all the amazing action sequences and even more amazing transforming by the robots, a more convoluted and complex storyline might have been to hard to understand for the younger crowd. As it was, I think it was excellent. A storyling that you could actually follow, lots of great action, and best of all, the amazing Robots! The comedic relief that was in the film had me laughing & smiling!, the action and the Transforming had me on the edge of my seat! All and all I would say I am glad I can bring my children to this film & I can actually enjoy it. I hate going to any of those 'Disney' cartoons with them, & actually my kids hate those movies and can never sit through them,(boring to them). If they had made this movie for adults only than guess what people, all that they would have done was add some sex and lots and lots of blood guts and gore flying around. This movie has enough to keep the adults entertained, but not so much that the younger 'Transformer' fans wouldn't be able to handle. I loved it and am looking forward to seeing it again with my children.

Scott Weinberg, you poor little man. I hate to be the ont who says this, but the first syllable of your last name describes you best. This is a Michael Bay film. If you don't dig 'em, don't watch 'em, and in the interest of your "career", don't critique 'em. In spite of the bones you threw to his previous movies, you are still in grave danger of becoming what you accuse him of- being predictable. I saw Transformers last nite. Walking in, I put my brain on cotton candy mode, made the conscious decision not to be pissed off if this movie didn't change my life, and I had a ball. Sure, the plot was a little loose, and perhaps they could have mixed up the cinematography with some more far off shots, but it was still a cool thrill ride. Forgive me, but critiques from people who either couldn't afford film school or lack the testicular fortitude to tough it out really makes my --------- itch. Alot of you guys sound like you got beat up alot in gym class, and this is your little way of lashing out. Find a hobby. Help blind kids or something, but stop holding action movies accountable for having too much action. It's like going to McDonald's and asking for the wine list. They ain't all Star Wars, Whiney. Dig That.

I saw the movie last night with my 10 year old son and we both LOVED IT! Can't wait to see it again. My husband and I grew up with Transformers and my son became a fan at 5. If you are gonna waste time comparing the 80's version with the movie then of course there will be differences. But if you are willing to observe the movie with an open mind and a heart waiting to be thrilled then don't wait! Buy your ticket now. Oh by the way for the individual who remarked about the Japanese cars being a lure in this movie guess what? THEY ARE AMERICAN CARS. EVER HEARD OF CHEVY??????
Go see this movie. It was great!

Hands down, one the best action, sci fi movies i have seen in a while, and if you didnt understand what was going on in the film then maybe you are just a little slow and should think about a career change as a movie critic. Fan or not you would enjoy this film to the fullest, it had something for everyone, action, humor, romance, bad ass cars, and good looking people. If you weren't a fan before you sw this film you will surely be one after.

I should've read a lot more of the comments made by people about the movie before making my comment because I would've said...well, I won't stoop to their level. For those who wrote a freaking book on here, especially the "reviewer", who warned people and told people that it's a waste of anyone's time to watch the movie, GET A LIFE!!! I guess it's true about the old saying, "you can't please everyone". This movie is entertaining, good humor, and just simply again, an AWESOME MOVIE!!! For those of you who haven't seen the movie, please ignore everyone's comment and just go see the movie so that you can decide for yourself but if you don't, you'll be very disappointed because you missed out =).

This comment is in response to "Luke Branson pro reviewer" comments. Sorry Luke, I do not believe that you are a professional reviewer. I went to see the movie alone without my 2 boys first, and before I went home, I spoke with at least 6 different families & their children to get the kids opinions. These kids ALL loved it. My boys will love it, in fact I loved it!! Great action, & yes even better computerized Robot action (so good it looks real)
Please, please please folks, keep in mind that this movie is for entertainment, it is about Tranformers, The Tranformers are a brand made for and geared towards children. Why would I want this movie to be so thought provoking, so disturbing, so bloody, so full of sex guts blood & gore that my 10 year old would not be able to see it? If you want horror than go see horror, if you want an adult only film, then go see a PG-17 and above film. I for one, am glad they made this movie accessable to my kids, they love the tranformers cartoon, they own almost all the toys, they & I would have been sooo disappointed if this movie had to much adult content. As it is, it is perfect...comedy for the adults, action that is not over the top & full of blood & gore, and great Robots! Yes they could have done a better job,(can't they with every movie), and Yes it could be more adult(but for what purpose).
I think that some people like to complain about everything, and are only trying to cause an uproar when they post such negative comments. I mean, get real, it's only a movie and meant to entertain. Since when do we expect a movie to be the end all of everything of entertainment. If we are entertained for an afternoon, that's the point. We need more in between movies like this one! More that are beyond the silly song and cartoons of Disney, and less the blood guts, gore & sex that they add to adult movies to make them adult. This movie is perfect for those in between ages, and yet as an adult I enjoyed it too!

Saw the movie - thought it was great. Talking to a buddy post viewing, and we started on a classic barrage of what was "unrealistic"...it's Transformers...c'mon. The nostalgia was enough to stop talking sh** and simply soak in what was once out favorite cartoon. Give me a break - what can you possibly expect?

Its TRANSFORMERS people! You need 1. Robots that transform into cars. 2.Cars that transform into robots and fight. THATS IT! If you want more than that go watch some art house flick about 2 French girls who fall in love and move to a villa in Spain. If you expect more than Robots that fight you probably review movies for a living and don't know how to watch a movie for what it is and not what you think it should be.
