J.J. Abrams Talks 'Cloverfield:' Ethan Haas Sites Are Bogus
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Mystery & Suspense, RumorMonger, Fandom, Movie Marketing
For all those people (myself included) who have spent hours or even days trying to crack the codes included within those two mysterious Cloverfield websites -- EthanHaasWasRight and EthanHaasWasWrong -- I've got two words for you: Stop now. That's because producer J.J. Abrams stopped by AICN and told the fantastical Harry Knowles that those sites have "nothing to do with us" (meaning the film). Yup, I'm not kidding. We've received a ton of emails from folks wondering how we knew in the first place that those sites were linked up to Cloverfield. Well, the short answer is ... we didn't. We were following a rumor that another reliable site had posted -- coupled with the fact that Paramount was removing those Ethan Haas-related videos off YouTube and every other movie blog on the planet was reporting the same stuff, all lead us to believe that what we were looking at was in some way related to Cloverfield (or Slusho).
Interestingly enough, Abrams alludes to the fact that there are more websites out there and we just haven't discovered them yet. He tells AICN: "Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we're doing some fun stuff on the web. But, obviously, if the movie doesn't kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat's about what's online? So as you can imagine, we're focusing mostly on THAT. For what it's worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site." He doesn't tell us anything else about the film, but I'm glad he showed up to put the kibosh on Ethan Haas once and for all. So now you have a new mission: find those other sites. But beware -- now that this news is out, you know there will be several people out there creating fake sites to throw you off. In the meantime, those of you who missed the official trailer can now check it out over here (in glorious HD). Oh, and if you do stumble across a legit Cloverfield site, don't forget about your friends here at Cinematical. Smiley face.

Why should anyone believe Abrams at face value? The "Lost" producers played dumb when it came to the ARG involving the show last summer. They denied everything related to the Hanso Foundation and the ARG. The woman behind the website hacks and video blogs even showed up at Comic Con last year to blast the producers during the Q&A session.
Abrams could simply be doing the same thing now.

I should note that the woman showing up at Comic Con was part of the ARG. She was still in character. The producers role was to continue to play dumb and deny that she was at all credible.

Oops. The site changed. It used to have links to 1-08 site and Ethan site (listed as Cloverfield).
Now hidden text at the top reveals a date and time.

Yeah you guys fell for it big time, drank the kool-aid as they say.
The whole point of the websites is subversion anyway, why would they admit it openly. It's something, if not this.
And really how much time out of your day did those simple little puzzles take anyway?
I guess we'll see come August 1.

he's bluffing. First a woman reporting of Slusho (now a site mentioning 6??) and then the 1-18-08.com site has a new picture. And now he feels he needs to speak out?? We need to dig people!

You guys crossed two different viral marketing pieces into one. Slusho's release date is listed as 1-18-08. The othe is clearly for August. Paramount can release two sci fi/fantasy films in one year.

Dear J.J. --
If you want to tell me about your movie, I will gladly listen. If you want to keep mum about it for a while, that's fine too. If you want to play stupid games trying to make me guess what it's about ... no thank you. Let me know when you actually have something to say.
Your friend,
Eric.

So I keep reading rumors that this is a movie based on the video game Rampage because allegedly JJ Abrams was previously rumored to make a Rampage game and the appearance of the Slusho drink is an allusion to the game and the mutations (even though all I can find is that the mutations in Rampage are due to Scumlabs). Can anyone point me to any published material that would indeed confirm a JJ and Rampage connection or the slurpee drink in Rampage. Thank you!

Google's top search for "Ethan Haas" is a cast photo from the cancelled CBS sitcom "The Class."
http://tvcomedies.about.com/od/classthe/ig/The-Class--Cast-Photo-Gallery/Jason-Ritter-as-Ethan.htm
It doesn't seem like *that* common of a character name. It seems like enough of a bad joke to lead me to believe that the Ethan Haas sites *are* J.J. creations, but still have nothing to do with the movie.
I haven't written about any of this at Spout, because it's really hard for me to care. I basically concur with what Eric Snider wrote above--Lost has me skeptical that Abrams is still capable of telling a compelling story behind all his silly misdirection.

Oh, come on... it's just a play on words, misdirection, etc. Paramount tooks the clips down. There's no other movie on their slate that this would make sense for. This post could be worded a tad more ambiguously.

What about ethanhaas.org? Could be fake, but it does have some reference to 1-18-08...
August 1st is a Wednesday. Some movies get released on Wednesday's, but they're your mega-blockbusters. We'd know if something was coming out on August 1st.
Also, August 1st is 8/1, which is 18 flipped. Too many 8's and 1's for it to be mearly a coincidence, me thinks...
