Golden Compass Posters: Exclusive First Look
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, New Line, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Hold the 'Fone, Images, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig
The recent trailer release gave us plenty of reasons to geek out over the promise of The Golden Compass, New Line Cinema's winter tentpole and hopeful torchbearer in the franchise department: The talking polar bear, the emergence of another young talent named Dakota, Daniel Craig's reunion with fallen Bond babe Eva Green, Daniel Craig's (post-Invasion) reunion with Nicole Kidman... Now we have some pretty artwork to feast our eyes upon, along with four character posters that are essentially puzzle pieces enlarged from the key art. Not that we mind: Check out the shoulders on Kidman! Salty. Green's poster gives us a nice view, too, of the scenic parallel universe. I suppose the ladies will dig on Mr. Craig's Wright brother-in-the-wilderness look as well. And yeah, the kid on the bear's cute and all. Safe to say this one's already shaping up to appease all ages... (Click on the images for larger versions.)

Nicole Kidman looks unsurprisingly stunning.
Daniel Craig looks naturally badass.
The polar bear looks like it has an unnaturally huge mouth.
Eva Green looks serenely magical.
And Sam Elliot...well, he looks exactly like Sam Elliot, which is always fine by me.

It good that Daniel Craig & Eva Green have reunited since Casino Royale. It first time 007 has reunited with 1 of his Bond girls. I do want see Daniel Craig in other movies too beside Bond movies.

Loved Craig in Casino Royale and many other projects, but I think he's been badly miscast here.

I beg to differ, Donna. I don't know how familiar you are with Craig's body of work (No pun intended.) but the man has an incredibly dynamic range and immense acting chops that pretty much allow him to play any role.
I won't even ask you to delve deeper into his oeuvre than the familiar, higher-profile movies you may have not even been aware he was featured prominently in when you saw them pre-Casino Royale. I'm talking about movies like Road To Perdition, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Elizabeth, The Jacket, Sylvia, I Dreamed Of Africa, Munich, and even A Kid In King Arthur's Court.

L.G. omitted one very important performance by Daniel Craig, that of the killer with whom Truman Capote forms a relationship in "Infamous." Most versatile gentleman.
Am more than eager to see the films based on Pullman's trilogy. I'm 74 years old, and this trilogy is my favorite book(s)in the world.

Oh, no, Mr. Evans. Craig's noteworthy and gutsy performance in "Infamous" definitely did not skip my mind. It's just that that film came out in the white-hot blaze of Casino Royale thunder so people really wouldn't have an excuse for having missed his presence in that film, at all.
Unfortunately, it was definitely quite overshadowed by the (much-deserved) might of the Bond hype machine and got lost in the shuffle last year.
At any rate, your enthusiastic endorsement of the His Dark Materials trilogy of books is probably going to get me to Borders to check them all out for myself.

I agree with 'gorbal',
Because new line cinema says that they will only make the other two books into films if the Golden Compass film is a sucess and makes them money.

UGH! This is horrible - who in his right mind decided Nicole Kidman should be Mrs. Coulter? They're going to ruin these books; I hope Pullman flips his sh*t and pulls a Salinger on the rest of the trilogy. Boo New Line, you dirty commercial h0r. Stop destroying good fantasy!

Anyone else find it concerning that Nicole Kidmans boobs are bigger than the actual star of the film???
They're destroying this story... I pray I see this and I enjoy it... but at the moment I'm really not convinced.
And can they please stop advertising it as a 'from the makers of Lord of the Rings'. People do realise that Pullman said he didn't like Tolkein?

@Carly
Er, you do realise that Pullman suggested Kidman in the first place (before the movie was announced), and thinks she's perfect in the role of Mrs Coulter?
But what the hell does Pullman know, he only wrote the books. **rolls eyes**

I wish they hadn't changed the name of Iofur Rankinson to Ragnar Sturlussen.
I also agree with 'Asriel'

Yeah, Carly... I was going to say what Asriel said but he (she?) said it perfectly. :P
I admit I am not a big fan of Nicole Kidman and think her acting range is limited, HOWEVER... I think Mrs. Coulter is exactly the type of character she CAN play well. In any case, she was Philip Pullman's 1st choice, so that's all that matters.

Gosh I am really suprised that anyone would think Nicole Kidman would ruin this project, or that anyone would think her range limited!? I think along with Cate Blanchett, she is one of the most versatile actresses in contemporary commercial cinema.
films like Fur, Dogville, The Hours, Birth, The Others, Moulin Rouge and Portrait of a Lady show incredible range and skill!! Of course like anyone there have been duds and artistic compromises, but inparticular, I would of thought that anyone that had seen Nicole in The Others would know that she is perfect casting as Mrs Coulter, and of course Philip Pullman thinks so as well.
I think Nicole and the rest of the cast are great, and she will lend a real distinction to this project.

Meh, I'm sorry to say I don't like the style of the posters.
Apart from that, both Daniel Craig and and Nicole Kidman look great (though I did imagein Lord Asriel with broader shoulders), Dakota looks... different from what I expected, hopefully she can pull off a good performance.
Eva Green I'm not so sure about, I don't like the outfit so much.
As for Sam Elliot, I always imagined Lee Scorsby as somewhere in his late 30s early 40s, without a beard, somewhat taller and much leaner. So really my opinion here is biased, I don't like him :P.

I think that the posters are visually appealing. But one must admit that a story based on a book will not live up to everyone's expectations: everyone sees the words and the images they create differently. I think the film's interpretation, while a bit different from mine, fits well.
I personally think Nicole Kidman is the perfect choice for Mrs. Coulter, and Sam Elliott is the perfect Lee Scorsby. While they may LOOK the part it has yet to be seen whether or not they will live up to the characters we all know and love.
I am looking forward to the theatrical rendition of this story because I think it is an important one. Sadly, I have noticed a lack of the word "dust" in all the previews and I sense that it might be played down, which would be a real shame. I hope the compromises made to the story aren't so far gone that the underlying messages of truth, friendship and love go missing...
