Pixar Developing 'Cars 2', Source Says
Filed under: Animation, Disney, RumorMonger, Family Films, Remakes and Sequels
With Toy Story 3 coming to theaters in 2010, I keep wondering why Pixar didn't plan sequels to any of its other hits. I guess we kinda got a follow-up to Monsters, Inc., but I'd love to see another whole feature with Sulley and Mike. I'd also like to see a full-length return of The Incredibles. If I had to choose, though, I'd much rather see new, original stories like the wonderful Ratatouille. And I most certainly would never, ever ask for a sequel to Cars. Unfortunately, I wasn't asked, and even if I had been, my answer wouldn't have mattered. Pixar would just go on ahead and make Cars 2. It isn't official, but someone informed the JV Pixar News blog that the sequel would be Pixar's next movie after Toy Story 3. JV has been following the story for a little while; back in June, the blog reported Cars 2 would come as early as 2009 and that a Cars short would be shown with next summer's Wall * E (apparently all these rumors/info originated from statements made by Paul Newman at this year's Indianapolis 500).
Cars was the first Pixar movie to really bore me. Hearing that it will be continued in a sequel is extremely disappointing, because I hate to miss anything the studio puts out. I'd probably eventually force myself to watch it -- maybe it could be an improvement -- but it would take a long, long time. I'd even rather see Finding Nemo 2, despite the fact that I didn't love the first movie (I liked it a whole lot more than Cars, though, that is for sure). Nemo would even make more sense to me as the movie to do a follow-up to. It made the most money of any Pixar movie and I believe it is more popular and more critically revered than Cars. Even The Incredibles made more than Cars. So, I don't get it; why would Disney be most interested in that one? It didn't even win the Oscar, for goodness sakes. In my opinion, it was something of a failure for both Disney and Pixar.

My baby loves the cars from Cars. I think that Cars is fantastic for merchandising, more than any other Pixar title (but I love the movie, so...).

Are you kidding me? I LOVED the movie. I'm an adult with no kids, and I know plenty of other adults who loved the movie as well.
Strange that along with this 'news' I get to read over and over again how you don't like the movie, and to what degree, but nere a mention of a reason why. (Save the ambiguous 'it really bored me'.)
I say bring on the Cars 2, I can't wait!!! The first one was exremely funny, and I expect a few chuckles at least from the second.

I thought Cars was a good movie.
NASCAR is fast becoming the "in" thing. Why I will never know. With the popularity of NASCAR growing, Disney / Pixar may be betting it means more $$ for a sequel to Cars.
It's all about the all mighty dollar!

You make a good point, Cars was a niche movie in a niche that is growing. Having grown up around auto racing, I appreciated a lot of the subtle references that were likely lost on the casual movie goer, adult or child.
At 42 I am expecting my first child. With a 2011 anticipated movie release, he will be just old enough to see it with me. You can bet we'll be standing in line on opening night!
(P.S. also loved the Route 66 historical references)

Cars may be at the bottom of the Pixar barrel, but it's a pretty shallow barrel.

Well, Pixar did say no years ago to Toy Story 3, but Disney bought them...that kinda changed the game.

Cars was a totally different movie then anything Pixar has done. All of the other movies involved live characters (insects, people, animals, etc). Cars was totally unique. And if anything, Cars will help them with Wall E's animation.
It would be difficult to make a sequel to Monsters, inc. or Nemo because of the way the stories ended. How would you sequel Nemo, Nemo grows up and his kids get captured ?
If anything, go back and watch Toy Story (the original) compared to the later movies. Take a look at how Pixar has improved. Personally I cannot watch Toy Story 1 or 2 or even 3 when it comes out. I cannot stand Tim Allen.
Bring on Cars 2 !!! I'll be in line. And if you, Christopher Campbell, get a pass for a early showing, I'll take it !!

Agreed. I loved the movie, especially seeing Luigi and Guido decked out in Tifosi gear and Schumacher making a cameo at the end. I was laughing my head off. I think I was the only one in the theater who got the joke.
I'm right there with everyone else for Cars 2.

Close to $2 BILLION in Cars merchandise being sold since it's release is why we will see a Cars 2. They will be able to introduce new car models/Car characters for the collectors to buy.

I think the key is whether you are a "car guy" or not. I am obsessed with automobiles, and while I didn't think much of it at first, I grew to love it. I agree it's the worst movie they have made, but that being said, it's still much better than a lot of junk that out there. Its still the first DVD I pop in when Im bored...

Did anyone else notice that the whole story of Cars was the exact same as the movie Doc Hollywood with Michael J. Fox? Cocky doctor on his way to a big job has an accident in a small town gets stuck there for a while, falls in love but leaves for the big city then comes back for the girl and the town. I've seen movies copy some parts but this was really just a pixar remake. Rent it you'll see.

in regards to the no more sequels comment i believe it was that there were to be no more direct to dvd sequels as they are pretty dire but if pixar decide to do a cars 2 (proper) a lot of folks will be very happy including the toy collectors. but i might be biased as belive cars to be pixars best yet followed by the incredibles (the dvd sequel i have ignored)and my son absoulutley loves the movie but funny enough hates toy story...

I was amazed to learn that Cars was one of Pixar's lowest grossing films. I absolutely loved Cars and it is definitely my favorite Pixar film. My guess would be that changing tastes, quicker releases to DVD, and the consistent hyper-inflation that has plagued box office ticket prices skew the comparison of box office receipts from film to film. I think Toy Story 3 is a great idea (loved the first two) and Cars 2 would be even better. I hope Pixar is done branching out with films like Ratatouille. I thought the idea was okay, I love cooking, I work for a French company and I have an interest in French culture, but this move was H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E and sadly, the first non-kid-friendly Pixar feature film.

It's obvious that Christopher Campbell doesn't know what he's talking about with movies. Cars was an awesome movie that my kids love watching over and over again as well as playing with the cars. It's been over a year since it's first release and they have latched onto that movie more than any other that I've ever seen.
It's also obvious that he didn't watch the movie very closely to see how well the CGI was done. Things such as the shadows bouncing off of the cliffs as they drove by, or the tire pieces blowing across the tracks... But, hey, he'd rather watch rats making food. It's not that Ratatoille was horrible, but it didn't rank compared to Cars, as I'm sure you'll see by the majority of the comments on this page.
With reviews like yours, I hope you don't watch Cars 2. It's obvious that you're not very good at your job.

Cars I think is one of my least favorite when it comes to pixar but people have got to understand that every time you say Cars isn't good, you're really comparing it to other pixar movies. Compare it to other nonpixar animated movies and Cars beats them all. All other animated movies compared to pixar is dirt. Cars it the least on a pixar level but not on a movie level. I would really like to see the incredibles 2 , but I don't mind cars.

while some may or may not have liked this movie, i enjoyed it and have two children that enjoy it. that is not the bigger picture. i would estimate that of all of the pixar movies combined, cars has sold more after market toys/clothes/etc liscense products. that is big enough reason to make a sequal. it is now two years after the movie, and the "stuff" is not only still a huge hit, but new "stuff" is stlll being made!!!! the "money" is what it is always about.

My son loves Cars he also has toys etc. It is one of the Disney Pixar movies I sat down to watch and enjoy.
To the ones who did not like Cars obliviously it was too above your mental statis and you did not understand it.
Cars is a kids movie. Who cares if you do not like it.
I cannot belive that they are doing Toy Story 3, the first 2 were one to many.
