Get a Load of the First Tom Cruise Photo from 'Valkyrie'

We're calling this one Pirates of the Caribbean: The Germans Are Coming! No, Tom Cruise is not replacing Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow; this is a pic of the actor -- as German officer Col. Claus von Stauffenberg -- from Bryan Singer's upcoming drama Valkyrie. RopesofSilicon bring us this first look, and they also have up a fairly interesting comparison shot of the real Stauffenberg and Cruise. To say these guys looked similar would be an understatement -- is there something about Tommy boy we don't know? In the film -- which is based on real-life events, Cruise plays a German officer who led the daring July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944. This is a weird role for Cruise, and I'm curious to see if he throws on one of them English-German accents for the film. Also starring Patrick Wilson, Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Wilkinson, Eddie Izzard and the very beautiful (as well as potential future Bond girl) Carice van Houten, Valkyrie is currently scoping out August 8, 2008 as a possible release date. So whaddya think -- would you bring this guy home to mom?

Well, I have to say this in the kindest way, but he looks absolutely ridiculous.

Look at Cruise's hand; von Stauffenberg lost fingers as well as that one eye during his military service. As a Catholic, Stauffenberg came to believe that Hitler was the Anti-Christ and had to be destroyed. I'm not giving away much of a spoiler by telling you that the plotters ended up as martyrs at the hands of the Gestapo.
You can make fun of the way Cruise looks but the heroism and sacrifice of the Valkyrie plotters is undeniable.

You're so right. I cannot deny the heroism of Von Stauffenberg, especially since I do know what happened to him and the conspirators. And yet I have to make fun of the way Cruise looks. I'm not making fun of the martyred officer, I'm making fun of an actor who is playing him.
Just because a movie has a serious subject doesn't mean it has to be taken seriously; that's the fallacy everyone makes whenever some bad fictional film about Rwanda or the Holocaust comes out. Let's not lose our sense of perspective here.

Another movie with Tom Crusie's character over reacting to everything? Awesome.

I've got to agree that he looks pretty damn silly. If he's supposed to be 30 lbs heavier than he might want to actually put on some weight. His face is that of a 140 lb man, but his stomach is that of someone who is around 190. Doesn't mesh whatsoever and make it look like he's part of a high school play.

Oh...my...schnauzzers...you have GOT to be kidding. The Jodpurs..the jodpurs are killin me..ok, ok..breathing, breathing...ahem..you know what this means, of course? This means we will be subject to dear Tom attempting a German accent. This will be his attempt to prove he's a credible actor. Oh, wait, he did that already, Born on the Fourth of July, how could I forget that jaunt into "give-me-an-oscar Land". God help us. And, um, am I insane or does he look like that bad guy in Raiders of the Lost Ark, I can already see his face melting.
