'Grease' and 'Grease 2': Where Are They Now?
Filed under: Comedy, Music & Musicals, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels, Hold the 'Fone, Summer Movies
When John Travolta was cast as shy, overweight housewife Edna Turnblad in the movie musical Hairspray -- a role originated by drag, um, heavyweights Divine and Harvey Fierstein -- much was made of the fact that Travolta would be singing and dancing once again, a la Danny Zuko in Grease. (Well, also that he'd be donning a fat suit, rollers and a muumuu.) Less hyped, however, was the casting of co-star Michelle Pfeiffer, who not only got her start in a movie musical as well, but also did it in those very same hallowed halls of Rydell High. Yup, I'm talking about that most misunderstood of sequels, Grease 2.
Now, we got a lot of flack for not including Grease 2 on our list of the 25 worst movie sequels of all time, but I'm going to come right out and say it: I love Grease 2. Really. It's not that I don't understand the criticism -- let's face it, it's a baaad movie -- but it helps if you regard it not as a sequel, but as a festival of gloriously cheesy awesomeness. I mean, dude! It's got a song about bowling! Sex education set to music! Michelle Pfeiffer singing and dancing! If you can't appreciate the sight of Pfeiffer shimmying across the quad as she belts out how she wants a "C-O-O-L ... R-I-D-ER ..." then I kind of feel sorry for you.
Anyway. With fellow Rydell High alums Travolta and Pfeiffer finally starring in a movie together, and a musical at that, we took the opportunity to look up some other Pink Ladies and T-Birds and find out where Grease and Grease 2 stars are now. What do you think of their careers? What about those we had to leave off, like Lorenzo Lamas, who had a small part in Grease as dumb jock Tom? (Also, for the record, Sha Na Na is still around. On Saturday, they rock Columbus, Ohio.) And at the end of the day ... is Grease still the word?

I get a lot of flack for loving Grease 2 but I don't care! It's my all time favorite cheesiest movie. C'mon Max Caulfield in tight leather pants and Adrien Zmed singing about where to pick up chicks that will put out! It's soooooo bad but it's sooooogood.

There is plenty of love out there for GREASE 2. I hosted a Blogathon for it a few weeks ago, on its 25th anniversary and had record traffic.

This weekend in fact, there is a reunion with several members of the cast at an autograph show in Burbank. I'm not able to go but you can find details at www.grease2.net

I loved the first Grease a lot more than the 2nd...maybe it was because Danny and Sandy are a lot more known and they just are way more appealing to me and are my favorites...I still can't believe John Travolta plays the mom in Hairspray, that just reallt amuses me! =) Does anyone know if there's gonna be a Grease 3?

Sorry guys, but I'm 52, and it seems that some things may get lost in the shuffle after so many years. (Or maybe my brain is just lost in the shuffle).
Like, how about Lorna Luft being the half sister to Cher.
Anyone ever hear that?

and another popular, then and somewhat now, female actor, in the 80's?

Is it just me or did they COMPLETELY leave out the original broadway actress who played Sandy?? Where is Carole Demas in this expose'? Mention "The Magic Garden" in a room full of 30-somethings and heads will turn - I'm disappointed they didn't take the time to follow-up on this incredible actress who is continuing full-steam with her career after 40 years and is still absolutely stunning. Maybe it's just me, but if I see one more pic of an overweight jeff Conway and his reality TV woes I'm going to cry! BRING BACK THE MAGIC GARDEN!!!

I really enjoyed "Grease", instead of "Grease 2".
John Travolta was my idol. I loved his work in "Saturday Night Fever" and I enjoyed his dance moves to the Bee Gees songs "Night Fever and "More Than a Woman". "Grease", however is better, because he gets to be the leader of the T-Birds gang. I enjoyed the race at Thunder Road between the T-Birds and the Scorpions. The two songs I enjoyed are "Grease Lightning" and "Your the One that I Want". John has come a long way on his career and he still can dance like he did years ago.

I remember "Frenchy" from when we were kids--when she was Ms Bernstein--we had the same Uncle. Her Father's brother was my Uncle Jules. We attended some of the same family functions, but were never really closeIt bothered me that she distanced herself from the family when she became DiDi Conn.

I really can relate to Grease one. It brings back the days when i was at the age where i was doing just about the same thing as in Grease one. Drag raceing, chaseing girls, ect. The music i can never forget. It was great back then. I also had a haircut they called a Duck Tail. Back then, the hair was the thing for guys and girls. Wish i could bring it back again. Wonderful days. Love the 50`s,,
