Are DVDs "The New Panties"?

Bridgette Williams is Senior Editor of GuideLive.com, an online entertainment resource site operated by the Dallas Morning News. She's also an inveterate underwear shopper. Lately, though, she's found more and more DVDs in her shopping basket along with her six-pack of plaid panties. She puts it into personal perspective: "Women have one Thing we look for when we're in a store, mall or on a website that may carry it. For me, it's lingerie. ... It's not that I need more unmentionables, it's just that you can never have too much, especially if there's a sale. ... I'm looking, no matter what I set out to buy." She admits that she hardly ever watches them. For a man's perspective, GreenCine Daily recently pointed to the "aha" moment in the life of film critic Michael Atkinson: "I no longer buy DVDs, and am very stingy about buying books (whereas I used to be a slut). I don't think I'll live long enough to see and read everything I already have." As I commented at his blog, "for me, just seeing a book or DVD on a shelf can bring back memories of what I read or saw, like hearing a song from my youth or seeing my childhoood home." When I need to relax, I shop for DVDs. I adore the idea of always having something new to watch. Of course, as a result of my spending habits I also watch my DVDs while sitting in a $10 camp chair.
What about you? With so many DVDs now bargain priced, do you find yourself tossing one or two into your shopping basket, even if you didn't set out to buy any? Do you watch all the DVDs you buy? Or do you confine yourself to renting or borrowing what you want to watch?

I used to be a huge DVD-buying whore, mainly so that when people come over to my apartment, they can be like, "Wow, you have a sweet DVD collection." And then I point them toward the 15 or so movies I still haven't watched yet. Lately, though, I've just been renting off Netflix. Saving money. Occasionally, if I'm shopping in Target or one of those stores, and there's a DVD I see that I'd love to watch that night (instead of waiting two days for Netflix to send it), I'll buy it.

I was big into DVDs until about a year ago. The rush of Blu-Ray and my lack of a BR player at the moment, I've held off on most DVD purchases until I've got a High Def DVD player available. No sense in buying DVDs if i'm moving to either BR or going to rip DVDs to my computer/server.

I learned my lesson when DVD shoved VHS out. Man, there were some sweet deals on VHS tapes back then, but when I got a decent DVD player and I couldn't stand the sight of VHS. So, for now, I rent with Netflix (which will ship you Blu-ray at no additional cost) and any purchases are on Blu-ray. Granted the difference between Blue-ray and DVD isn't as huge as DVD to VHS, but it is there (the bigger you TV the more you'll notice). Now talking my wife into not buying any more DVDs is another story all together.

I've never impulse purchased a DVD. I only buy them when I set out to do so.
I've impulse-purchased titles, though, but only when I planned to buy a movie. I used to walk past a Best Buy on the way home from work all the time, so I'd haunt the value section. If it was a single-digit price I'd consider it. As a result I've got many $4.99 DVDs.
I'll openly admit that over half of my DVD collection is still in shrink-wrap, too. I get some sick satisfaction from owning certain movies. But I am always loathe to put a DVD on, like many people I'd rather watch whatever is on TV. Even if I already own the DVD and know I'm watching a censored version with commercials in a crappier resolution. I can't explain it, I suppose a combination of apathy and laziness. But I know I'm not the only one.

I admit that I impulsively buy DVD's...but they either have to be something I loved when I was younger, I loved it recently, or I hope I'll love it. I've seen all the movies I own and a couple of them have been duds(Mazes and Monsters, Seed of Chuck). The bargain bin at Walmart for 5.50 a movie and the 4 for 20 at Blockbuster are my biggest weaknesses. I don't plan on stopping any time in the near future. Especially since my goal, is to reach the amount those guys on Cribs have(hate the show but you gotta love their amount of money and stupid purchases with said money).

I have a DVD addiction. Now with about a thousand in my collection I have definitely slowed my purchasing but I still get butterflies when I see a table of $5 DVDs. I am a real collector though, I love the packaging, the inserts and extras as much as any of the movies! I just wish I could see into the future and decide which HD format to support!

DVD buying is so 90s. I used to buy a ton when the format first started out, but now I realize the better solution is just netflix. There aren't any movies or tv shows that I really want to own these days and I'm in the middle of selling a lot of my 250+ collection.

Yes, I admit an extreme weakness for sub-$10 DVDs. Despite my aversion to ex-rental discs, once they got down under $2 around here (really), I found myself buying them by the armful. Am I behind on watching them? Heck, yeah, but that's better than the alternative.
Better to have discs and not watch them than want to watch them and not have them. Just like panties. Well, you know what I mean.
