Another 'Cloverfield' Photo Arrives Online
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Movie Marketing, Images
This time with more blur! The problem with this mysterious Cloverfield movie is that after the hype machine blew through for a period of about a week and a half, things have calmed down and no one seems to care much anymore about figuring out what the hell J.J. Abrams has up his sleeve. Folks like to play games for a little while, but there comes a time when they tire of the mind-fu**ing and simply want to know the deal. While the film's official website, 1-18-08.com, was fascinating and peculiar at first, it's slowly become rather busy and uninteresting. Oh wow, another photo to toss around with your mouse for twenty minutes! What will they think of next? It's cool; feel free to call bullsh*t on me -- after all, I am single-handedly helping to push the marketing machine forward by continuing to write about the film and its online trickery. But that's my job. And if I didn't vent from time to time, then how the hell would I fill up an entire post?
By now I'm sure you've guessed that another photo has popped over at the Cloverfield site. This one is pretty difficult to make out, but it looks like people are running in the streets and some dude in a military outfit is there to make sure folks flee to the appropriate areas. I'm not sure who's actually taking these pictures, but hopefully they'll remember to use their flash for the next one. Like the other three photos on the site, you at home have the option to move it around the page and swap it out for one of the older images. I'm not sure what the whole "photo movement" has to do with anything, except that it gives people a reason to stay on the site longer and pretend to be figuring out a clue that no one else has solved yet. As I said before, the site is becoming rather busy with all these photos, and so I imagine they'll introduce a new gimmick soon (possibly at ComicCon or shortly thereafter). Other than that, we're told this will be some sort of monster movie (Muppets Take Manhattan 2?), and it shall arrive in theaters on January 18, 2008.

If I had the time, I'd do a splice of the coming attractions footage, and -- right after the guy yells, "It's alive -- it's huge!" I'd put in the sequence where the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man comes walking around the building from GHOSTBUSTERS.
All of the times, fwiw, are tied into biblical passages, and all are apparently about armageddon and judgement day. Someone posted it elsewhere, but the big favorite is that the beast is Cthulhu.

I still like the "Son of Stay-Puft" idea, though.

By "all of the times" I'm referring to the time stamps on the photographs.

Maybe this one is Genesis 1:24;

Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind"; and it was so.
For viral marketing, this is pretty good. It's going to get old, though.

Since the teaser aired at Transformers, I'm guessing it's not Godzilla (2), or even Stay Puft, but more like Voltron. Please God, let it be Voltron. That would definitely explain the "lion" comment in the trailer and the roaring.

I'm really hoping it's something original. Slusho (apparently) plays a big part, and as far as I know Slusho isn't in Voltron, Godzilla, etc.
Also I really appreciate the marketing for Cloverfield. I guess it's because I was one of the people who were a past of the ARG for LOST, so I like things like this. Although there isn't much info yet, well info that we found.

Ralph,
Somebody already beat you to doing the Ghostbusters thing.
As for this movie?
I still care.
Don't forget that the title will be released this coming Thursday.
That should (hopefully) put an end to things.

Um, THERE IS A TITLE, THERE'S ALWAYS BEEN A TITLE.
People have just assumed that because it said "1-18-08" on the movie theater screen, that this just meant it was the date of release. It IS the date of release, but it's ALSO THE DATE THAT THE MOVIE ITSELF TAKES PLACE (proof here at official site: http://www.1-18-08.com/) When the photos develop you will see the date that they were taken in the bottom right corner of each photo: 1/18/2008. You will also see time stamps in each photo: the earliest time stamp is 12:01 A (which basically means AM), and that particular photo is of the lead male arriving at the party, which basically means that the movie will focus on a 24 hour basis. The movie will end at the end of the day.
Nice site, by the way. Yours, I mean.

By accident, i flipped the photos on the 1.18.08.com site. If you click and do a circle motion on a photo (there can't be any photos on top of it) it will turn over and in a couple of cases reveal a note. I think only two of them (the party photos) have notes on the back. Then, do the circular motion in the opposite direction and it will turn back over!
check it out!
