Maggie Gyllenhaal Trash Talks Katie Holmes
Filed under: Action, Casting, Warner Brothers, Celebrities and Controversy, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
As J. Peterman once said, "I am smack dab in the middle of a good old-fashioned cat fight!" While recently discussing her role in next year's Bat-sequel The Dark Knight, Maggie Gyllenhaal dunked Katie Holmes into a Dawson's Creek of verbal abuse. Gyllenhaal is taking over the role of Rachel Dawes, which Holmes originated in 2005's Batman Begins. Check out this quote from Gyllenhaal, but you might want to put a jacket on first: "I'm not thinking of it as a role that anyone's played before. I'm not walking into Katie Holmes' performance. I'm thinking of it as an opportunity to play somebody who's alive and smart. Chris (Nolan) asked me to do this because he wanted me, not because he wants some generic lady in a dress." Daaaaaamn! No she didn't!
I'm not sure Holmes really deserves any more negativity at this point. She's in a mercilessly mocked marriage that no one seems to take seriously, she's got a new baby, and she hasn't exactly been adored by the critics. Holmes certainly gave a pretty weak performance in Batman Begins, but let's give the gal a break here, no? What do you guys think about this, is Gyllenhaal being too harsh on Holmes? In the interview, Gyllenhaal also mentions that she might give the Jackie Chan thing a try in the film: "I'm really excited about it. I mean, it's not some silly action movie. Chris Nolan is directing, Christian Bale's starring. I'm really excited and curious about doing a couple of stunts in Batman." Why do all "serious actors" feel they have to justify being in action movies? They always have to point out how different and superior this one is to all the others, or its "I'm only doing this crap so I can finance my pet project -- a tone poem about migrant Chinese workers." You want to do an action movie, silly or otherwise, do it! We don't need to hear that you'd normally be above such frivolous projects.

I see nothing wrong with a guy like Oldman saying he's doing a project for the money. Most people work on jobs they dislike for the money. Real actors want to make it clear that like everybody else they do work that's beneath them or unsavory; hack non-actors like Tom Cruise want you to believe every piece of crap they churn out is quality. We're all whoring ourselves for work. Some of us are more honest about it.
To be frank, while Batman Begins was a decent film, it was far beneath Bale ans Oldman but definitely in keeping with the kinda crap churned out by Caine and Neeson.

First of all, Maggie Gyllenhaal is a notorious fug bitch. The fact that this piece of crap has never had box office or critical success is a testament to the fact that she has no on-screen appeal or friends in Hollywood. The public doesn't like her, and directors don't want to work with her because of exactly this smug attitude. Whatever did she accomplish that sets her above Katie Holmes? Seriously, her performances have been terrible, not to mention she is disgusting to look at. And just to be clear, I'm not saying any of this in defense of Katie Holmes as an actor.

These comments are being completely misread and used to create drama where there is none. It is pretty obvious to me that in saying "generic lady in a dress," she is describing the role, not the previous performance.
It appears to me that Maggie is saying is that the role doesn't have to be some interchangeable, insert-female-supporting-actor-here role; there are plenty of opportunities to bring some life and character to it, and just because someone played the part before her doesn't mean she feels like she has to play it generically OR like the previous acress.

That's precisely what I responding to. I couldn't give a rat's ass what that beard Katie Holmes does. I'm answering Patrick's comments that actors feel a need to put down the crap films they do for cash.
Honestly, read all of the articles and maybe then the comments will make more sense to you.

Gotta agree with Lalla here. she doesn't say "Katie Holmes blew in Begins". All she said was that she was looking forward to playing an intelligent woman who will have a personality of her own (as opposed to a "generic" female character, the likes of which you see in almost every Bond movie). I don't really see anything controversial or hateful in what she said at all.

Yeah, I agree with Lalla and Kevin. When I read the title of this post, I was expecting something, but then I got nothing. I think she was tyring to highlight that her character will be HER character and that's it.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is my favorite actress - both for role choice and for physical, unconventional beauty and charm.
Boo to "oobe" for implying otherwise!

Wow, Patrick Walsh, trying to make news where there isn't any? She is simply saying that she is looking forward to bringing a little more substance to the role "superhero's love interest", which has historically been a mindless role.
And IMO, Katie Holmes was okay in "Begins". I love to make fun of scientologists as much as the next guy, but her performance wasn't that bad.
So if you goal is to stir the pot and generate comments (which being a blog site is the #1 goal), then I guess you succeeded.

Is there a chance we could actually get some interesting news, like why Gyllenhaal was hired to replace Holmes' character in the first place?

I don't think Maggie is talking specifically about Katie Holmes here. She's just saying that when Nolan went searching for a new Rachel he wanted to cast (another?) good actress.
Lay off Maggie. She rocks!

Matt, Holmes was doomed from the moment the whole Cruise thing started. She moved focus from the film and put it on herself. The WB brass made it clear they won't stand for that and Holmes was gone from the Batman sequel before the first film even hit theaters.

Maggie Gyllenhall is a good actress while Holmes is not. There is really no indication that Gyllenhaal said something detrimental about Holmes.
Says one poster: "The public doesn't like her, and directors don't want to work with her because of exactly this smug attitude. "
you must be living somewhere in another planet? Her role in Sherrybaby was impressive to say the least. What role did Holmes did that impressed you? As Cruise' wifey?
If you like Holmes too much, then don't use other actresses to promote her, and be precise about what was supposed to have been said. Its cool to read your stuff regularly, but this one sucks.

Thank goodness someone can read and comprehend. Why do some want to cause problems between others(especially women) when there is none?
Im really embarrassed for those who couldn't understand what ms Gyllenhall was saying. Perhaps night school might help.

Maggie is so talentless and so ugly. This is nothing new from her. If not for her 9-11 bashing and her porn flicks or family name would we even know her?
She is so cocky. She is a bitch to the fans and paps.

Hats off to Patrick for detecting the undercover insult by Maggie towards Katie. I happen to like Katie in BB and her chemistry with Bale. Truthfully Katie did better than the other annoying caricature Batwomen and did a better job than Alba,Dunst,Bosworth,Mendes you name it.
Halle Barry,Jolie in Tombraider,Garner in Elektra,Milla in Ultraviolet,Aeon Flux by Theron were not stellar performance. God forbid what happens to Wonder Woman. Maggie took a swing about blockbuster movies during the Pre-Oscar night.
All Maggie does is spread her legs and show her saggy tits. I didnt know that today's Hollywood considers that Oscar worthy. Paris Hilton can do that and even moi if Im desperate.
I dont care about ugly girls but its sad whey they have no decency. Her comments are deragatory.
Its reverse psychology knowing she is actually jealous of Katie and that Batman fans and the press dont like her as Batman's ladylove.
Some cant really buy class.

If you see Katie in The Gift by Sam Raimi,Pieces of April,Wonder Boys,Thank you for Smoking et al its loud and clear the girl has chops. Nowadays Katie is no longer the cute girl from the Creek but HOT WOMAN next door. This egotistical unnecessary comments will only bite Maggie in the ass. Is it too late to bring back Katie Holmes?!

What a big snob and her maturity seems stunted.
She needs to shut up because she is nothing more than a untalented skaink. Talk about A-lister wonnabe. I shudder at the thought of someone liking her and how gross that Bruce Wayne might kiss her.
I can go on how some Batman fans came face to face with Maggie and she acts pissy to them and ignoring them including many bloggers that encountered her at Diana Ross Airway concert. They said she is so ugly upclose and so old and has an attitude problem.
You can google pics of her too having hairy armpits.
This is also Maggie in her shining glory:

FYI-the tabloids finally realized how wrong they were of Katie esp seeing their magazine sales go down when trashing TomKat and the baby. Their business is good when positive articles and the truth are written. Katie is now getting noticed by directors and is becoming a fashion-media and people darling. She is rumored to do Nine,Swing Votes and even Warner and Hairspray producers are making a musical movie for her. On top of that she has gotten more beautiful.

In the long run this baahing by Maggie will only bite her in the ass.
