'The Darjeeling Limited' Trailer!

I'm such a huge, campy Wes Anderson fan -- I'm almost embarrassed to tell you that I shed a tiny tear while watching the much-anticipated trailer for his newest film, The Darjeeling Limited. I've found something to love in each of his films (yes, that includes The Life Aquatic), but I can also see how Anderson's style is not for everyone. I guess, for me, the ability to feel his movies is what I like the most. His characters are almost always very bizarre -- not your everyday Tom, Dick and Larry -- but he always finds a way to make them so relatable. And don't even get me started on his musical tastes. Let's just say all his films sound just as fantastic as they look. Can you tell I'm geeking out a little bit here?
Anyway, The Darjeeling Limited. It stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman as three brothers who go on a spiritual journey of sorts through India following their father's death. Right off the bat, the trailer shows us that these three guys, although brothers, are not close at all. Not only do they look completely different, but they don't seem to know a thing about the other. I love the line when Schwartzman says, "I wonder if we could've been friends in real life. Not as brothers, but as people." I guess that sort of sums up what this film is about -- three guys trying to find meaning in their relationship, aside from the blood relation. It just looks spectacular, and although this is the first Anderson film for Brody, he looks right at home. I'm not sure what else I can say about it -- just go watch it now. And if you're a die hard Anderson fan, let us know what you think. The Darjeeling Limited hits theaters in limited release on September 29.

It would be a lot more impressive if his collarborators get as much love from people who heap all the praise on Anderson. He is essentially a co-writer, isn't he? so they are basically other people's ideas as well, right?

Yes, I mentioned his co-writers on this project in my previous post on the film. Anderson's flicks are always a collaborative effort; here Roman Coppola and Schwartzman are credited, but I wouldn't be surprised if Owen Wilson and/or Noah Baumbach pitched in too.

I totally agree with you Erik, every single one of Wes' movies have hit a strong cord with me, and are all equally impressive and wonderful. I do hope, however, that Wes has found stronger writing partners this go around compared to Life Aquatic. I think we can all agree that even though LA was a fantastic film in its own right, it was a bit lacking without Owen Wilson co-writing compared to Wes' other films. Hopefully, Roman Coppola, and Jason Schwartzmen helped fill the gap that Owen left behind.

I'm super excited about the film, but the trailer makes it look like it rehashes a lot of territory from The Royal Tennenbaums.
I love the line about the train being lost, though.

Does anyone know what the names of the songs in the trailer are?

Not sure what the second song was but the first (and then last) is "This Time Tommorrow" by The Kinks off of the Lola... record.
That said I was a little miffed at the use of the song, which was probably the best part of the recently US released 60's french film "Regular Lovers". I wouldn't be surprised at all if Anderson saw it.
Additionally this looks like another step down (I could be wrong) from LA, Owen Wilson needs to start playing characters that are slightly different. From the looks of the trailer it appears as though he plays the same character he plays in almost all of Andersons films. Wes Anderson could also use a fresh idea or two, can't he make a film that isn't in the same tone and style as the rest of his work?

Re comments about how TDL seems to be a "rehash".
I like how Anderson is still true to his directorial style. Good directors have a certain stamp to their movies and it is not a bad thing to revert to tried and tested approaches so long as they serve a purpose to the film. And as far as I can tell from the trailer, it looks good, while expanding somewhat (including the use of Indian music). But I'm a fan of Wes so I'm biased here.
And meanwhile, let me just say that I WISH, HOPE, and PRAY that Owen and Wes would write together again. Not to belittle what other Wes collaborators have done, but it's just that the original duo had always, to me, pulled a certain kind of magic out of their writing hats. So yes, I'm eager for them to start writing together again. That would be, for me, something worth waiting for.
