'Star Trek' Teaser Poster

In case you missed it during our liveblogged coverage of ComicCon's Paramount panel, here's the new teaser poster for Star Trek (click on it for a bigger image). If you missed the coverage altogether, you can go back and check it out (including the Paramount photo gallery) -- actually, you must go and check it out. It was awesome. And I rarely think things are awesome. Also, for those who did follow live, we've since put up the photo coverage, which you might not have seen yet (including a pic of Karen Allen on the Indiana Jones IV set!!)
Anyway, during the Star Trek portion of the panel, the forthcoming film's director, J.J. Abrams, officially revealed that Heroes' Zachary Quinto is going to play a young Spock. And then, after introducing Quinto, he brought out Leonard Nimoy, who will also be playing Spock. Like JoBlo.com, a lot of you probably got the idea that Nimoy would be bookending the new movie, which would serve as a sort of flashback. But considering Abrams also mentioned that he hasn't figured out yet how to get William Shatner into the movie (so he doesn't feel snubbed), JoBlo's reminiscing plot doesn't seem likely. The other big news revealed during the panel is that Abrams has still not found his young Kirk. And he was apparently looking for ideas from the audience. I wonder if he got any feedback.
As for the poster, I love the use of the old font. The decision is perfect since the Trek franchise has never been too consistent with its logo design, and yet this is still a recognizable return to the original show. At least I'm pretty sure about this font being from the first series. I'm no Trekkie. I have to admit, though, that thanks to Abrams I'm finally becoming interested in the whole Trek thing. Not even my own father -- who wasn't a Trekkie or a fan, but who did introduce me to the franchise via his contribution to the first movie -- was able to do that. However, I'm not sure if I should start watching the shows from the start before or after I see Abrams' installment. I have a long time to wait for the movie -- Stardate 12-25-08 -- so maybe I have time to check out all episodes of all the series plus all the movie (of which I've seen three already).

i am a star trek fan from 1966 when i was in jr. high school. the years between 1987[particularly from 1992 on forward]have been a huge disappointment.
some twenty years have been wasted in mismanagement. due to passage of time, some wonderful dramatic possibilities have been lost-never to be regained.
that being said, if mr. abrams has decided not to go with matt damon for the role of james t kirk. might he consider mackenzie astin or his older brother, sean astin[sons of patty duke-john astin] as potential 'younger' choices for this important role?

glenda t: I think William Shatner might be just egotistical enough to not want a Hobbit reprising his iconic role.
(j/k of course. Sean Astin is a fine actor, and I'm sure Astin the Younger has decent chops as well.)

Now that Matt Damon says he's out of the running I suggest DiCaprio. You need a bigger than life name to play Kirk. Also I think Billy Connolly as Scotty is perfect. How about an actual scot to play the "old space dog"?

So....J.J. Abrams mentions at ComicCon that he is still looking for an actor to play Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot. Am I the only one who thinks that Ryan Reynolds could pull this off? He's certainly done his fair share of actions roles and would be the right age to play the part.....
