Comic-Con: Listen to the Kevin Smith Talk Here!

Kevin Smith has had a panel at almost every Comic-Con since for the past umpteen years, and the line for it is always out the door, around the corner, down the block, across the street, and stretches into Mexico. You can be sure of one thing at most Cons, and that is the fact that you're going to need to line up early to get into this thing.

Wait, I meant to say you can be sure of two things. One, line up early for anything Kevin Smith related, and two ... be prepared for a lot of swear words. This really isn't the sort of thing you want to be bringing your seven year old daughter to in her Pokemon costume unless you want to be explaining some fairly graphic things to her. If you do, get ready for an incessant stream of, "Daddy, why is everyone laughing?" Although the eleven-year-old kid in front of me sure seemed to get a lot of the oral sex jokes. Wow.

You can check out the full audio of Kevin's panel here (minus the Reaper pilot), but if you have any qualms about penis jokes and dog sex, be aware that this is most definitely NSFW, for home, for the subway, or anywhere else that people might object to that sort of thing. Here's a sample: "If Stan Lee's semen contained like, a tenth of the creative genius that that man has ... I would let him f*ck me in the mouth." And that's a pretty tame one.

Anyhow, he showed the entire pilot episode for Reaper, which I'd already seen, but was awesome on the big screens, and the audience loved it. The cast of creative team behind the series were onstage with him, but Kevin was at the podium and it truly was his show. Some highlights include:
  • He has a book coming out, which is a published version of his blog. It'll be out in September.
  • What inspired you to do Clerks? "Well, the first one, worked in a convenience store I had an indie film, and I thought well shit, I can do this ... and Clerks 2 was inspired by my mortgage."
  • If he wasn't making movies, he might be a human guinea pig in a medical research facility or a sandwich maker in a deli.
  • On why he doesn't make fun of Matt Damon as much as he done Ben Affleck, "Well, Affleck's just a lot easier, because I know him a lot better."
  • One guy decides to ask him if he'll ever make a movie with original characters that doesn't suck, and both Kevin and the entire room kind of go to town on the guy. If you're going to rail on him, the easiest way to do that is probably anonymously on the internet.
  • There's a new disc coming out as an addition to the Chasing Amy Criterion set that contains a new documentary and a Q&A from a recent screening. It's a standalone separate disc chock full of anniversary items.
He went over time, but no one was complaining, and he unfortunately had to leave a long list of people standing at the microphone with unanswered questions. You might want to start lining up early for next year's panel, especially if Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Red State are finished filming. It might be standing room only by then.
