From the lurking corners of the internet, sometimes called LiveJournal, comes a sneak peek at the DVD cover art for the Grindhouse separately released films Planet Terror and Death Proof. Based on these pictures, it looks like they'll be housed inside of collectible tins, with a regular snapper case underneath. But, as always with things on the web that don't come straight from the source, take it with a grain of salt.
You can read all about the special features that will be included after the break, but I'm most excited about Vanessa Ferlito's restored lapdance scene in Death Proof. Hopefully that'll be worth the price of admission alone. Rodriguez' Planet Terror will include mainstays from his DVD releases, including the 10 minute film school and cooking school entries, as well as a feature-length commentary track.
Thankfully, Death Proof will have a built-in special feature on your remote called the "fast-forward" button that will let you skip through all of those interminably long talking scenes. The shots of these DVDs look like they might have been taken at Comic-Con, where they had a real amputee dressed up like Cherry Darling. I didn't get close enough to check, due to the throngs of fanboys taking her pictures while she gyrated on a pole.
Death Proof is in stores September 18th, and Planet Terror is in stores October 16th.
Special features!
Quentin Tarantino's serial-killer homage to the old school car chase film, Death Proof will hit shelves with over 30 minutes of additional, never-before-seen footage including the maddening "missing reel" (containing the excised lapdance sequence) as well as a black and white segment in the film's second act. The DVD will hit on September 18, 2007 for a price of $29.95. Features will include:
- Finding Quentin's Gals
- The Guys of Death Proof
- Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike
- Introducing Zoe Bell
- Quentin's Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke
- Double Dare trailer
- International Poster Gallery
- Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Robert Rodriguez
- International trailer
- Deleted Scenes
- Cooking School
- 10-Minute Film School
- The Stunts
- The Make-up and Effects
- The Badass Babes
- The Renegade Guys
- The Costumes
- The Production Design

But if you wanted the intermission trailers your going to have to wait for the eventual Double Feature release.

While I do think they should also be releasing the two films as 1 GRINDHOUSE package so you could watch it just as you saw it in the theatre (for people who want that), I'm glad they're releasing them separately. that way I don't have to suffer through the disaster that was PLANET TERROR to get to the freakin' fantastic DEATH PROOF.
I hope on the DEATH PROOF DVD there is an option to watch the original cut and then the extended version with 30 extra minutes. I happen to like the original even with the "Missing Reel." I thought that added to the coolness of it!

I have to say that I loved the complete Grindhouse experience. I saw it in the theatre twice just because I was afraid of this happening. That I'd get split dvd's was always assumed on my part... but the fact that the fake trailers from intermission are missing is the thing I hoped wouldn't happen but appears to be so. The trailers are part of the movie...
I can't imagine I'd sit down to watch these movies in my home theatre with my friends serving up some nice BBQ during Planet Terror and some Grande Nacho Platters during Death Proof.... and not want to have WWotSS, Don't and Thanksgiving in the middle. C'mon I have a five disk changer I could just load both movies up and set it so it runs seamlessly one to the other... just give me my damn fake trailers or I'll have to wait. I don't want a "The Whole Bloody Affair" experience again. There would be plenty of people happy to shove 50 hard earned dollars on the true Grindhouse... making us wait for it is just unnecessary at this point.

I've been poking around and can't find anything on a singe DoubleFeature pack. I most definitely wish I could have an edition with the experiance I had in the theater: fake trailers, Acuna Boys Tex-Mex and even the kitty/restricted clips.
I was nearly glad we didn't see a damn lapdance cuz I was so relieved to see they were leaving the bar after the cut! The experiance makes up for QTs worst writing--in the diner Thoms recognizes Zoe's clue to Vanishing Point; it felt like some fanboy writing like Tarantino who didn't realize the impact the availability of a suped-up '70 Dogde Charger would have on her character and that she would really know Zoe wanted to take a ride. If somebody told me they knew someone was selling a DeLorean, I'd go nuts just hoping for a chance to even glance at it from 50 yards away let alone sit in it!
So I guess this convinced me to not rush out for the first week's low-price release at Best Buy and WAIT for a double that may never come. :(
