Matt Damon's Best & Worst Movie Roles
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Best/Worst, Hold the 'Fone
Matt Damon's come a long way since playing the lobster-challenged little brother to Julia Roberts' love interest in Mystic Pizza. He's come even longer since appearing as an extra in Field of Dreams (he was the guy next to Ben Affleck). And while he may not be quite as "celebrated" a celebrity as close pals and Ocean's co-stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney (though it's safe to say he's left Ben in the dust), he's got one major advantage: his OWN booming franchise.
Not only do they rake in the cash, but the Bourne movies seem to get better and better (just check out the reviews for Ultimatum). That never happens. So is it safe to say amnesiac spy Jason Bourne is the best role of Damon's career? Or was it as Good Will Hunting, the movie that introduced Matt and Ben to the world and earned Damon a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Or maybe it was one of Damon's two triumphs in 2006, The Good Shepherd or The Departed. And what was his worst? Moviefone takes a crack at ranking Damon's best and worst roles. Check it out, then argue the fine (and not-so-fine) points below.

I would have to agree with everything on that list except for The Talented Mr Ripley. It belongs at the top of the worst list. No film has put me to sleep faster than it did.

Love Ripley.
Damon's worst films:
1. Oceans movies are so far below Damon.
2. Rainmaker was idiotic in the extreme; feel good crap.
3. Dogma - felt like Sunday School classes but taught at a remedial level.
4. Syriana - preachy, simplistic, ridiculously bland, Time-magazine-ish-inspired bilge.
5.The Departed - empty-headed remake of a far superior HK film. Damon's character has no dimension and isn't the least bit believable.
6. Bagger Vance - see Rainmaker

His role in "Courage Under Fire" as the horse-whipped Medic is great...and barely recognizable from most of his roles where they wanted "Matt Damon" in a movie. Though I really like the Bourne movies and even Bagger Vance.

The ommission of Rounders on the best list renders this article completely irrelevant. By far, his #1 movie.

I agree completely with Roger Rees comment about Rounders. A truly spellbinding movie and performance way ahead of it's time and the current poker craze. How could you leave this movie off?

Best --
Ripley -- SCARY. The movie is just creepy and maybe he played his part a little to well.
Loki -- I thought this character was SOOOO interesting and entertaining -- apparently View Askew may have asked for him to be a little more violent than I would have liked.
Hunting -- Very nice college kid fare -- the story lines seem to run in circles a little bit though.
Vance -- Very, very good work.
Grimm -- Did not recognize Mr. Damon in this movie (until a few minutes ago when I saw that he was in the movie). The movie is such fun and Mr. Damon is very good in it.
Worst -- Haven't seen anything yet by him that I would call worst, but I have avoided certain genres he's worked in like Bourne Identity which is not my cup of tea 100% of the time. A script has to be really well written for me not to get angry that there's a waste of good talent. Maybe his other movies do use his talent wisely, just haven't got to them yet.

Anyone who has any 'sense' of what Badger Vance was about would never rate it as one of Matt's worse! Who rates them anyway??? Try watching it again and pay attention! You might learn something!

His Bobby Jones role in Bagger Vance was, I feel, ruined by the directing of Robert Redford. It is obvious that neither of them were ever serious athletes. Look at the baseball player Redford played in The Natural. Very amateurish and sophmoric. Same as the Jones role for Damon. They don't have a clue about how a real pro behaves.

I have to agree with Roger Rees and Wayne Otchis. Where is Rounders? How can you skip Mike McDermott. The movie is a classic which is quoted more than any other movie on your wacky list. There are professional poker players (World Series of Poker Main Event winner Chris Moneymaker for example) who credit Rounders with inspiring their poker pursuits.
Do your homework next time before making yourselves look foolish.

I loved "Bagger Vance". Schmalzy-malzy: I thought the script was warm and delicate and that Damone, Will Smith and Charlize Theron did a great job! Perhaps I'm a sentimentalist but I loved the story line and the love story. But certainly, the Bourne series is his greatest effort. Watch out James Bond!

The Bourne series is probably going to gross the most in dollars but some of the other films were equally as good. For example, I don't think of Bagger Vance as one of his 5 worst. I enjoyed the movie...and really...wasn't it a Will Smith vehicle to make or break? But it doesn't matter one way or the other. When you go to the movies, don't you put your brain in neutral & sit back with your popcorn & just enjoy the entertainment? I do.

Chiming in with Roger, Wayne and Sean. The omission of "Rounders" on the 'best' list is both glaring and unforgivable. It remains one of my favorite "great movies you probably missed" to recommend to friends.

I couldn't watch 'Stuck on You', rented it, watched it for a few, then eject!!
I think Matt is so good though. Bagger Vance was really entertaining, and GOOD. He had never swung a golf club, but took lesson's for the role, not too bad of a swing, probably pretty close for those days.
Good Will Hunting!! I've seen at least 6 times, Great movie. Bourne's have been Great as well. I agree w/ a lot of the other's about 'Rounder's', Very Good! To boil it down, I am a Damon Fan!!
