19 Year-Old Arrested, Charged for Recording 20 Seconds of 'Transformers'

I think it's safe to say that the fear of movie piracy has officially gone too far. On July 17th, Marymount University sophomore Jhannet Sejas (pictured) was celebrating her 19th birthday with her boyfriend at a screening of Transformers. Sejas, a Bolivian immigrant working two part-time jobs to support her education, was loving the flick. She wanted to show her little brother a clip from the film to get him excited to see it, so she took out her digital camera and recorded 20 seconds of the climax. The assistant manager of the theater saw her use the camera and reported it to the general manager. The general manager decided to bypass such reasonable steps as a) asking her never to record in the theater again, b) asking her to erase the footage or c) asking her to leave the theater, and simply telephoned the police. Within minutes, two police officers entered the theater, confiscated the camera, and charged Sejas with the crime of "illegally recording a motion picture." Sejas says "I was terrified. I was crying. I've never been in trouble before." Sejas has been banned from the theater (where she frequently paid for and viewed films) for life, and she has to go to trial for the incident this month. She faces up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. The Regal Cinemas Ballston Common 12 Theater decided to prosecute the case, which is a first for Arlington police. Kendrick Macdowell, general counsel for the Washington-based National Association of Theatre Owners, says that there has to be a "zero-tolerance policy at the theater level," adding "We cannot educate theater managers to be judges and juries in what is acceptable. Theater managers cannot distinguish between good and bad stealing."
You know what? They can, actually. It's part of being a manager. This story really infuriates me. Do they really think this girl intended to sell a 20-second clip of a movie that had been out for two weeks? Where's the market for that? If anything, she was trying to give these people more money by getting her little brother psyched to see the film. If they really need to make an example of somebody, why don't they go after the people who actually do pirate entire movies, and leave this poor girl alone. Or better yet, how about we hold off on calling the police until, I don't know, there's a friggin' emergency! See, because that's what the police are for. Disgraceful.

This is a prime example of the paranoia regarding piracy. We hear about it so much that when someone is seen doing a fairly innocent act, like recording a little clip for a child, it gets blown up into jail sentences and fines. Where are the arrests and prosecutions of the real pirates?

THERE IS A LAW YOU KNOW THEY ARE NOT TO BE BROKEN, HER REASON IS A STUPID ONE, BUY THE TRANSFORMER TOYS.
I DONT THINK SHE SHOULD GET JAIL TIME BUT DEFENITLY A FINE, WHY WAS IT BROUGHT UP THAT THEY WERE IMMIGRANTS. THAT DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND NOT RELATIVE TO WHAT HAPPENED.

Julie, her history was brought up to show that she's not made of money.
And, yeah, what can we do? I want to help.

I think the only way we could help is by setting up a fund thing where everyone donates a little something through PayPal. It wont do much but will help with the financial side of things if she is to be fined.

You are obviously a typical liberal moron.
There are laws in this country that must be abided by. We cannot enforce them selectivly just because she seems like a nice person.
This is like saying we can't enforce immigration laws just because these criminals happen to be mommies and daddies.
So I guess this means I can pirate all of movies and music that I want and because I'm a nice guy I should get away with it.

Laws are made by people for people. Just the tiniest bit of good judgement here would've avoided this whole thing and spared the theatre a ton of horrible press.

Dude this is not a question of being liberal or conservative because I'm super conservative, and this still makes me angry. The theater should have just asked her to leave and not return. I mean 20 seconds just to show her brother how much he would like the movie is not "pirating" the movie due to the fact that actual pirating is usually people looking to make money off what they have done and I doubt anybody would try to make money off 20 seconds of footage.

She deserves it for being a moron!

A. This girl was completely stupid for recording even one second of a film, especially with all the anti piracy posters floating around the theatres.
B. Calling the police first is policy at many theatre chains, it is after all a felony to do so, you don't ask a robber politely to stop taking your money do you?

This is rediculous...its one thing to videotape a movie for profit, however this has nothing to do with making money...she simply wanted to be able and show her brother a short clip...I'm from this area and I will not go to this theater again after hearing this.

Forget the piracy issue. It's just plain rude to be lighting up cell phones and digital cameras and whatnot in a darkened theatre. Calling the police may be excessive, but whatever gets people to stop being so stupid and offensive is fine in my books.

How can they really ban her? It's really impossible as they don't watch who goes in and out that closely.
Anyway, she'll talk to the prosecutor and to avoid bad press they'll give her a plea of probation. She didn't have intent to distribute so they're not gonna screw her.

I think jail is a good thing for her. The police exist NOT for emergencies but to arrest LAWBREAKERS. She broke the law. A year in prison ought to do it

WOW! I realize that her actions were not the best but this kind of knee jerk reaction is ridiculous.
Meanwhile the real criminals go scott free and a person who had a lapse in judgement is Punished unrealistically.
Isn't living in America just great !!!
Ladies and gentlemen, Common sense has left the Building!!
