First 'Speed Racer,' Now Here Comes 'Jonny Quest'

As odd as it may sound, I've never watched an episode of Jonny Quest. While I'm fully aware of the show, there was something about the adopted Indian kid, and a dog, and a weird scientist -- not to mention the little blonde kid who looked way too cute and innocent to be going on all these adventures. But that's not stopping Hollywood (who've been itching to resurrect old, vintage cartoons as of late) from turning the 1960s animated series into a new live-action extravaganza. Like they're doing with next summer's Speed Racer, Warner Bros. has decided it's time for Jonny to take off on another quest, and Variety reports Hitman producers Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter have signed on to produce the flick based on the cartoon created by the great Hanna-Barbera. Dan Mazeau (Land of Lost Things) will pen the script.
There's no word on a director or a cast yet (will Zac Efron dye his hair blonde and play Jonny?!); all we know is that the film will feature young Jonny, his scientist father, his adopted Indian brother, Bandit the bulldog and a government agent assigned to protect them while out investigating scientific mysteries. I know the cartoon has tons of fans (so much so that Cartoon Network revived the show and DC came out with a Quest-related comic), but live action? In what world would the government be keen on two kids, a dog and some scientist dude running around (on the government's dime?), trying to solve mysteries? I guess the same could be said for a lot of movies, but this one has definitely piqued my curiosity. Not surprisingly, Warners is also looking to turn this into a family-friendly franchise should the first film be successful. Are you a big Jonny Quest fan? What do you think about a live-action flick?

The thing about Jonny Quest was that it was a bit more mature than your standard cartoons back then...often dark with scary monsters that KILLED people, not to mention people being shot left and right. You'd never get that in a cartoon today on TV, except on Adult Swim or something! They had a high-tech supersonic jet and would travel the world.
Two monsters have stuck in my mind since the 70's when I saw them as a kid. One was an energy being that was invisible until the gang flew in with jetpacks and dropped paint bombs on it, revealing a ghostly thing that was floating around. The other one was the Russian-made giant robotic spider that would creep around stealing secrets from the US. It had a giant eye that could literally shoot out and smack people in the face, presumably killing them. Awesome! Anyone else remember those? Hope they feature those in the film :D

The success of a lot of those old HB cartoons rode on the fact that they were a little hokey. Well, perhaps not at the time they were made, but that's what helps them stand up over the test of time. Cartoon Network/Adult Swim has been plumbing the depths of the back catalogue for things to mock for years now. I can't imagine anyone bringing anything to the screen that holds up to this legacy as well as distinguishes itself from the crop of derivitive media already out there.
In other words, They should can this project and bring me a Venture Brothers full length animated feature.
THAT I'd go see.

Jonny Quest could be a great film -- the key is to keep the story in the early JFK/Peace Corp 60s -- the Jonny Quest Comico comic books in the mid 80s were excellent and should be the source to develop film

Y'know, the Venture Brothers is a good show and all, but I think it's become cliche to turn everything into a joke. While shows like the Venture Brothers, or Space Ghost Coast to Coast are funny and well-done, there's a certain lack of creativity to just taking something familiar and saying "ha-ha, the animation's bad, isn't that silly?"
I'm much more interested in taking stuff that might be considered a little "hokey" and actually making it work. If you want to see how good Jonny Quest could be, check out the JQ comics Comico did in the 80s (along with their excellent Space Ghost one-shot, much more satisfying than DCs "Dark n' gritty" version), or certain episodes of Cartoon Network's "Jonny Quest: The Real Adventures."
Again, satire and parody have their place, but if you had to live with, say, one Batman movie for the rest of your life, would you pick the 1966 Adam West BIFFWHAMPOW-fest, or Batman Begins?

@ #4 Have you watched the Venture Bros? I have never come across anything that would be covered under the "bad animation, haha" comment you made. In fact, while one of it's sources is 'Jonny Quest' it takes from multiple sources. In fact what it really does is take all those combined source materials and puts them in a world where they sort of work. It's in a whole different comedic category then Space Ghost CtoC. Insanely funny, with hilarious situations, top notch.
Needless to say, I love The Venture Bros and would kill for a feature length movie, live action or animated,

Hey Sir Loin, I,too, enjoy those two shows as being
scary ( when you are 9).However, I want to correct you about the spy robot spider. The robot had two
"feeler" antennaes that can hear through walls and also be used to smack in the forehead to leave you
laying on the floor.
