Are These The Worst Supporting Performances of All Time?
Leave it up to the folks over at Entertainment Weekly to open up a big ol' can of worms. Basically, they asked readers to name some of the worst supporting performances of all time -- and kicked things off with a still of John Turturro (as Agent Simmons) from this summer's blockbuster hit Transformers. Funnily enough, Turturro was one thing (out of several) that I despised about Transformers. The flick was fun and entertaining, no doubt, but some stuff was just too ... annoying. And Turturro (who's usually fantastic in every role he takes on) was one of them. Checking out EW's featured gallery, I have to agree with a good majority of the performances mentioned. Let me run a few past you:
Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins is on there, as well as Ben Stiller's horrifically annoying supporting performance in Dodgeball. Adrien Grenier gets the "stale, boring and wooden" nod for The Devil Wears Prada, and Julia Stiles joins him in that category for her supporting role in the Bourne films. But the one mention that's sure to upset a few people has to go to Sofia Coppola from The Godfather: Part III. Kidding (although she is on there) -- I'm actually talking about little Emma Watson as Hermoine in the Harry Potter flicks. The person who submitted Emma says that the actress' "heavy sighs" and "eye rolling" are annoying to no end. I'm sure I can find about a trillion readers who disagree with that statement. There aren't many older films on there; I believe the oldest goes to Mickey Rooney's performance as a Japanese neighbor in Breakfast at Tiffany's. So check out the list and let us know: Are these the worst supporting performances of all time? And which roles were left off the list?

Emma Watson isn't the best actor on the block ( then again none of the kids in Harry Potter are brilliant) but the honour of wrost supporting actor should be Rupert Grint. He stands around looking stupid, then shows us his sad face and then says "bloody hell." The cycle continues to repeat for the next two hours in which I contemplate poking my eyes out with sharpened Twizzlers.

Wow, I liked Stiller in Dodgeball (about the only thing I liked in it) and I found Turturro amusing in Transformers (which was better with the humans, while the robot stuff sucked butt).

Julia Stiles had hardly anything to do in the first Bourne movie, and she became a more important character as the franchise went on. So of course she's going to be "stale and boring" at first--that's what makes it so interesting when she does finally get a chance to speak.
And I know it's very fashionable to bash Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, but she wasn't terrible--just not as good as Bale, Neeson, and the other people in the cast. She was the weakest actor, but she didn't bring the whole movie down.
Mickey Rooney, on the other hand, ruined Breakfast at Tiffany's for me. Good call there.

Oh man. Rooney will never live down the "chinky neighbor" if he lives to be 110--which is next year, right?

I with #3 about Katie Holmes. I don't see what the fuss is about. She played a relatively minor role and played it well enough.

"Nobody makes me bleed my own blood..." How can you hate on Ben Stiller in Dodgeball? He has some of the most memorable lines in the whole movie.

What a dumb list. Joaquin Phoenix was great in Gladiator.

Re: Katie...Speaking as a fanboy, the hero's girlfriend just has to look good. Katie was fine in that regard. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a better actress, for sure, but looks?
Re: Joaquin...he was okay as the sneering villain in Gladiator. He was far better as the tortured priest in Quills (same year, right?)

these lists seem to be more miss than hit at the moment - Ben Stiller's role in Dodgeball was great - it was a dumb, great dumb comedy & his part was great for that part.
Emma Watson plays as good a part as any of the kids in those movies
Somtimes I think the people writing these lists miss the point of what films are about & just want to score point in some kind of highbrow contest.
Although, reading it again - I realise it's inputs by readers - they suck!

They needed to include Travolta in HAIRSPRAY and William Hurt in A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, to say nothing of Kevin Spacey in USUAL SUSPECTS.

The movie: Shadowboxer. V. psychotronic, including such oddities as Mo'nique and Joseph Gordon Levitt tongue wrassling. BUT: the supporting performance by Macy Gray is so amazingly bad that it knocks a VW sized hole even in a movie this weird. This is a performance that cannot be forgot.

I call bullshit on 'Ben Stiller in DODGEBALL'. That was - is - one of the funniest comic performances in recent memory.
Matter of fact, I find his 'wacky' roles more entertaining than his 'straight man' roles...though that may be due to my distaste for the films (Something About Mary, Meet the Parents...).

Okay, I must say that had to be ONE OF THE WORST lists I have ever SeEN. Truly horrendous list. One bad supporting actor I must put in is Thomas Kretschmann in King Kong (the ship commander). I just found his acting horrible.

Sorry kelsey but many critics and fans alike disagree with you about Rupert Grint. What you said about Ron's characterization in the potter films is more due to the fact that he is not given enough material to display more range. If the scene calls for Ron to just be there, standing or sitting around without any speaking lines, then that's what you see on screen. If the script says 'bloody hell' is supposed to be Ron's line for 10 times throughout the film, then that's what Rupert will deliver. Do you think the director would allow him to adlib or do something else in the scene other than what's stated in the script? I dont think so.

Thank God for Rupert because the other actors in the movies are terrible. Emma has only acted well in Azkaban. Luckily she's pretty enough for everyone to overlook the blatant overacting and annoying eyebrow movement.

Emma does a fantastic job in the HP movies, and has no business even being considered for this list. What a joke.

I like Emma but she can really over do things, which is why she might be better for Broadway. I don't think book Hermione is as hyper like the way Emma portrays her onscreen. It gets really annoying sometimes. She only tones it down when she's acting with Rupert because their chemistry is just great.
And to the rude comments about Rupert, well it doesn't matter really. I mean the critics are 100% for Rupert and many of them say that even without him being given the most lines he still outdoes the others. So a few silly fans wants to say something negative about him, then go for it.
