Tom Welling in 'Justice League' Movie?
Filed under: Casting, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Apparently neither Christian Bale nor Brandon Routh are doing Warner Bros.' Justice League movie. Does that leave the studio desperate to find replacements? Not according to IESB, which always seems to have the best scoops before everyone else (to paraphrase The Joker: Where do they get these wonderful sources?). The movie site, which also broke the news that Stephen Sommers would direct G.I. Joe, claims Tom Welling is filling the cape of Superman in Justice League. This should be good news to a lot of Smallville fans -- as my comic-obsessed buddy says: "That's who they should have gotten in the first place [for Superman Returns]" -- but it hasn't been confirmed yet, so no celebrating just yet. Still, IESB seems more sure of this rumor than any the site has ever announced. They admit over there that they haven't gotten a reply from Welling's people and that the WB people have denied it, but they're still positive that it is true, because of the sources they've heard it from.Supermanhomepage.com got an official response from Smallville producer Al Gough, who said this casting "hasn't happened, won't happen, he is under contract to Smallville through Season 8." But IESB has recognized this debunking and still isn't backing down. The site insists Welling has the role and even points out that Smallville may even revolve production around the movie's shoot. As for Bale's replacement, IESB claims to also know who's playing Batman but doesn't have a good enough amount of sources to reveal it. Meanwhile, CHUD has a sarcastic response to the whole thing. The site has a joke post up claiming that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson (poor guy) have been cast in the movie, the former as Batman and the latter as Superman. The post also brings back the old floater that Jack Black would be Green Lantern. Of course, CHUD is obviously making fun of IESB and wonder if they could get a lot of hits by just making up casting rumors, such as Jamie Bamber as Superman and Gerard Butler as Aquaman. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if IESB's latest, including the tip that Justice League will only be partially motion capture (like every other fantasy movie these days), is true.

Perhaps IESB recognizes that "Smallville" would be no great loss to the world. It should have gone off the air several seasons ago; it's nothing but a pointless mess now.

I've only seen him in Smallville but Tom Welling has the acting chops of wet cardboard which makes him a perfect alternative for Brandon Routh.

Tom Welling would be FANTASTIC as Superman in the JLA. Unlike Brandon Routh, he's very marketable and has broad appeal (if you go by where Smallville gets most of their ratings from) and I hear the ladies like the guy too.
If you think about this, it's the PERFECT way to get Welling in the Superman role without having to take all of Smallville's continuity problems with him since no other Superman-related characters are in the JLA film.

I don't know about you, but I like the idea of Jamie Bamber as Superman. Then again, I would.

I think this Justice League movie is an awful idea. Check out an article I wrote about it at: http://www.alexandermacdonald.com/batman.htm

Tom Welling is SUPERMAN for this generation period!
Anyone else who plays big blue on the big screen in the next decade or so is a fake, a fraud!
The only face to the role that matters is that of Welling since he will after the show runs its course be the actor who's played the part longer then ANYONE! (Chris Reeve included) The fans want the ultimate payoff from the show, and thats a Tom Welling Superman movie!
If the WB wants to ever make money with Superman again they will listen to the fans, and cast Welling, and dump Singerman.
Brandon Routh is a joke, and terrible one at that! He isn't an actor he's a bartender...
Tom Welling is SUPERMAN!
P.S
I'm a heterosexual male, and yes this is the way I feel...

I am a lifelong superman fan. Loved the Chris Reeve movies growing up. Mostly enjoyed Returns although I thought Routh was a dud. I am really excited about the possibility of Tom Welling playing Superman in the JLA film. It would be a perfect way for him to close out his run as Clark Kent. The timing is perfect too. The movie will release after the final season of Smallville has come to a close and fans of the show will flock to see JLA to see Tom finally doing what we've waited 8 years for.

I'm a smallville fan but I don't see Tom Welling as Superman for this movie. Although Tom is a grown man in his 30's(I believe)I would still see him as a high school kid. I would be more excited to see Dean Cain come back as superman. As for Batman, I can't think of anyone I'd be excited to see as batman, maybe Micheal Keatin but only if they do a Frank Miller type of Batman with him. Make Micheal look 50 and play a more twisted batman.

I sure hope its Tom Welling! It could be his biggest break yet! He deserves the role. Man, i wanna see him don the Big Blue's spandex with an "S" on his chest! Tom being Smallville's Clark Kent is much of a big credit to the movie knowing he's already comfortable with the role. It would be like "acting like himself" the whole time. Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and the Smallville crew should give recommendations to the JLA movie! Smallville fans, whaddaya say?

I agree, I would truely love to see Tom Welling cast as Superman in this movie. Im totally at the edge of my seat watching smallville.. and loving Season 7, I really hope they make more but I also hope that Tom is cast in this movie..
I must admit there is something about Tom Welling that would complete Justice League... I was hoping he would be cast in the Superman Film but unfortunately they didnt.. mmmm shame.. Theres always hope as I think he would be just as good in his own version of Superman The Movie..
Theres also something about Tom Welling, his looks are very much simular that of Christopher Reeves.. not literally though.. I mean fresh and bright.. Im afraid Brandon Roath lacks all of that.
I will endevour to carry on watching Smallville, and indeed hope theres more to follow, and I do have my fingers crossed for Tom being in Justice League.
