Some Aural Creepiness from '1-18-08'

I'm sure you've been waiting for another morsel about the 1-18-08 -aka- Cloverfield flick. Bit by teeny little bit, news has been coming out about this film, which has to speed up at some point if it wants to make its '08 release date. 1-18-08news.com has posted the next little piece -- a heads up that the official website has been updated. It now includes a roar. Yes, that's it -- a roar. If you go to the website, sit there and wait for a while you'll hear it -- although to me it sounds like a roar that turns into some sort of guitar screech. Obviously this is a little bone for the uber-anxious, since not everyone will just keep the website open on their browser long enough to hear the jump-inducer. I'm wondering if it would've been better to do one of those e-mail forwards that tells you to stare at some picture long enough ... it would be a great way to introduce the monster!Beyond that, there's nothing really new to report. Personally, I'm really itching to see how Drew Goddard does on his first feature film script. He got his start on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and wrote some of the best of the latter episodes, like Conversations with Dead People. (He's also often referred to as the hot Buffy writer, which is understandable, since the guy is a looker.) Since then he's written for Angel as well as J.J. Abrams' two shows, Alias and Lost -- so he's got some experience with mysterious and other-worldly fare. What's surprising is the other Abrams crew on the job as director -- Felicity exec producer/writer/director Matt Reeves, whose last feature was the David Schwimmer stinker The Pallbearer. Stay tuned for the next crumb ... sure to be thrown at some point!

Somedays, I feel like the only person who is not buying into the hype of this movie. Any movie that needs this much hype will never live up to the expectation of the audience.
Not to mention that JJ Abrams should be considered one of the single greatest mondern day promoters. He can take great piles of crap (Alias, Lost) and convince people that they are watching something compelling and intelligent.
Have we all forgotten he is responsible for "pearls" like "Felicity", "Joy Ride" and "Armageddon"?

has anyone noticed that you can flip the photos over and there are messages on a few of them?

I read somewhere that the monster sheds scales and those scales turn into little monsters. is there any truth to that?

I'm with Ant all the way. I'm not a fanboy. I'm not a big sci-fi fan. I'm not huge into monster movies. And I still feel inundated by this annoying film and its unfortunate promotion.
If it weren't for the ridiculously simple Heroes, Lost would be the most overblown show on television. Abrams and ABC would have us believe it's The X-Files and the Twilight Zone rolled up into one. And I keep waiting for Gilligan's Island references...
I blogged about the Cloverfield hype in mid-July, and I was sick of it then. (http://meetinthelobby.com/cloverfield-hype-a-vague-trailer-abz3293-and-lots-of-online-bs.html) I swear, by December, online sycophants will already be touting it as the next "classic". They did with it Superbad (although perhaps that's accurate).

@ Ant & Norm, the movie obviously isn't aimed at film connoisseurs like yourselves who only appreciate black & white movies made in Europe directed by some dude who wears eye liner, me ill stick with monsters, spaceships and super heroes for my celluloid kicks.

All arguments about the movie aside, I just noticed on the website that if you "grab" a picture at an edge and make a quick looping gesture with your mouse, you can flip them over. Two of them have writing on the back...nothing important, but kind of cool.

1-18-08 = A perfect example of the increasing popularity of viral ad campaigns. Can you not see, by not giving a PROPER trailer, thay have ALREADY ruined the film???

I think its funny how on the back of the picture that says 'remember who takes care of you', the ink is weaker (almost like watercolor) on the s in takes, and care. s care. ha.ha.ha.
Though I am curious about the 3912 on the chef pick.
