The Wachowski Brothers Are No More

More signs of a slow, post-holiday news day: Cinematical reports on the completion of a sex change operation. Yes folks, we're going there. According to Rated-M, the man formerly known as Larry Wachowski has officially completed his full sex change. Now, I'm not sure whether he had an actual operation, or if he just underwent hormone treatments (I'll admit to not being an expert in this area), but Larry is now Lana Wachowski. Say goodbye to referring to the writer-director duo as the Wachowski Brothers; I imagine from here on out, the PC thing to do will be to call them The Wachowskis, or Lana and Andy Wachowski. Which is fine by me. If a sex change helps make a person feel more complete, and subsequently brings happiness to their lives, then I'm all for it. On behalf of Cinematical, we wish Lana good luck moving forward.
Interestingly enough, Lana will speak to the press about this -- which is rare for the Wachowskis since they're not ones to speak to the press about anything, let alone something this personal in nature. However, rumor has it that she will not openly speak about the sex change until after Speed Racer hits theaters on May 9. On top of that, sources say that Andy Wachowski will do all the press for the film as well for fear that the whole sex change thing could potentially harm the family-friendly film. Aside from a newly-released photo showing Lana's full change (which you can see above, and click on to see the full pic), Rated-M also claims that Dateline NBC has nabbed the rights to Lana's first public interview on the subject. Going forward, it will be fascinating to see how Hollywood and the Wachowski fans handle the sex change. Will everyone embrace Lana, or could this damage their careers?

I hardly think it will make a difference. The whole sex change thing has been publicly known for years at this point. I started calling them the Wachowski siblings a long time ago. They're not exactly media whores so I don't see how it will make any difference to anyone. It's just not that big of a deal.

To say that someone had a "sex change" generally means that they actually went through with the gender-reassignment surgery, after living for the specified time (I'm never sure how long) as the intended sex, taking the hormone treatments. So from here on, calling them "the Wachowskis) wouldn't just be the "PC" (god I'm sick of that term) thing, it's simply the accurate thing.
I'm a little afraid of how much ignorant, bigoted crap they're both going to have to hear over this. But it's not something that's gone through lightly; if Larry/Lana has gotten to this point, that means it's been years of self-examination and careful consideration, and I applaud her taking this step.

They already made _V for Vendetta_ -- I think the question of whether they've damaged their careers is moot.

Penis or no, I still think the Matrix movies suck. And V missed the point and Speed Racer will likely bite and... I'm sorry, am I coming across as a cynic?
I seriously think anyone who cares anything about what these guys do with their own lives is wasting their own time worrying about it. I say if you need to sex-change to be happy, cool. The only problem I'd have would be if you wanted to cut someone else's balls off. That would be bad.
And sex changes aren't always about liking boys and being too embarrassed to be openly gay. They're usually about feeling like you were born the wrong gender. Come on, am I the only one who saw "Transamerica"?

Hell, the Matrix sequels tarnished their reputation.
A sex change will not make up for just all around crappy film making.

I went to ComicCon in San Diego in 2004 and they were both there for a panel. He was definitely up to something. Larry/Lana had a french manicure with fake nails, pearl stud earrings, arched waxed eyebrows and hair pulled back into a bandana - and oh yeah, wee lil boobs. It was the elephant in the room nobody talked about but certainly exchanged curious glances. He looked exactly like the article's photo (which must be a few years old by now)
I'd be interested to see how he looks today.
After all the money they made on the Matrix, do they really need to work again?

What are you talking about? His wife left him years ago because of this.

A) The Wachowskis don't do their own publicity, so it's very unlikely that Andy (the more reticent of the two) would start now.
B) The photo that blogger claimed was from earlier this year, was actually taken at Comic-Con in 2006.
The errors in basic information and the fact that the blogger didn't give any source makes this suspect.

Transgender people usually have identified themselves as the opposite sex since they could start differentiating between the two sexes and chances are Larry was born more female than male (internal ques are much stronger of an influence than the presence of a penis or vagina). Biologically speaking, Larry probably has always been more chemically/hormonally more female than male and due to a biological mishap ended up with the formation of a penis. It's the same thing when someone has Wolf's Syndrome or similar syndromes. Lana IS female and has always been so and therefore, has always been a lesbian. The question that should be posed is how her girlfriend views her own sexual orientation and if this will cause a rift. I say "Rock on" Lana and be true to yourself. If that scares any of you then examine why is does so and also educate yourself on the difference between "transgender" and "transvestite."

Getting a sex change has NOTHING to do with a persons sexual orientation. It's about Gender. A transexual man or woman can be Gay, Bi or Straight. People always confuse Homosexuality with Transgendered. Homosexuals like the same gender, and have no problem with their own. Transgendered people simply feel as though their outside doesn't match their inside. It has nothing to do with whether they like boys or girls. So grow and do a little research before you post you hate comments.

I personally know both Lana and her partner and they are both wonderful very cool people! Lana is a great person and has had so much support from her family and especially her partner Karin. I wish that I could have the support she has had during her transition as I came out of the closet several years ago. I wish Lana the best she is the "coolest cat I know!"
