Three Take On a 'Haunting in Connecticut'
Filed under: Horror, Independent, Casting, Lionsgate Films, Cinematical Indie
As someone who grew up in Connecticut, I can agree the state is good for two things, Christmas and hauntings. We've already seen a few versions of Christmas in Connecticut, and now it is time for us to see a movie called The Haunting in Connecticut. I only wish that Ed Warren, one of the state's legendary and expert ghost experts, was still around to offer some help with it. At least his wife and partner, Lorraine is still with us. Anyway, now that Connecticut is welcoming so many film productions to shoot in state, it is only fair that our reputation for spookiness be well represented. And hey, if such a movie wants to use my last name, then that's cool, too. Like countless other residents of the state, my family thought our house was haunted. Of course, The Haunting in Connecticut is not based on my family; instead it is based on a documentary titled A Haunting in Connecticut, which presented the true story of the Parkers and the evil ghost that terrorized their home.We already learned The Haunting in Connecticut would star Virginia Madsen, as Sara Campbell (again, no relation), but now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we have more of the Campbell clan: Martin Donovan (Weeds) will play Madsen's husband, while Kyle Gallner (Big Love) will play their cancer-ridden son. Also joining the cast is Elias Koteas (Zodiac), who will play the obligatory priest who comes to help the family. In my day, you'd either call The Warrens -- who actually appear in the original documentary -- or someone from the local historical society (this is what my mom did), but seeing as how the convention of this genre is to follow the model of The Exorcist, a priest is a requirement. And yes, it seems there was at least one in A Haunting in Connecticut, so I shouldn't complain. Ironically, despite Connecticut's currently trendy tax breaks, The Haunting in Connecticut began shooting this week in Winnipeg.

I think hat I'm going to see this for 2 reason's. The first is I love a good scary movie and the second is that I love Kyle Gallner. He is a great young actor. I have seen him in a few thing's like CSI NY, Smallville and The Closer. He was perfect in all of them. This kid stole every scene that he was in.

I read the book in the 90s and somehow over the years had lost it and forgotten it, about 4 years ago I wanted to read it again but the book is like $100. for the paper back.I cant afford that. I was talking to my mom about it a few weeks ago, The book scared the (crapp) out of me, 20 minutes after telling that her I wanted it, I saw the commercial on T.V...how weird is that. I have read a little bit on the subject and to the Author..I realize that you wanted to write about true happenings, You did the best with what you had,for years I thought it was a true story, Knowing that its not, doesnt change the fact that it was a great book, Your a talented Author..And if the movie is as scarey as the book.. Everyone should Be ready to hide their eyes and scream like little girls....

I lived in Bristol which is north of Southington and I understand the novel "In A Dark Place" was largely fiction even though the Warrens were also in on the deal to make a buck because that is what they do for a living - being ghostbusters. Here's a great article on the movie and the real story:

check out an interesting post - see http://www.cinemablend.com/previews/The-Haunting-In-Connecticut-2882.html. here it is:
June 21, 2008 at 18:29 My name is Ray Garton. Back in the early nineties, I wrote a book called IN A DARK PLACE: THE STORY OF A TRUE HAUNTING. It was published as "non-fiction", but that was just marketing. I went to Connecticut to meet with the family involved in the alleged haunting of their former house, which used to be a funeral home. I was never able to see the inside of the home because the people who were living there by then wanted nothing to do with the "haunting", which they said was utter nonsense. It was my job to get the family's story down on paper and into a book. I worked with the family, and with the "ghostbusters" or "demon hunters" (whatever they happened to be calling themselves at the moment), Ed and Lorraine Warren. The article above claims "the family had little involvement" in this book -- that is simply a lie. They were DIRECTLY involved with the book -- it was them, the Warrens, and myself, nobody else. I attempted to get their story. Unfortunately, the members of the family couldn't seem to keep their "facts" straight. Their individual stories simply did not fit into one smooth hole. The article above states that the book I wrote "remains a source of controversy." The only source of controversy was the family, because they just couldn't keep their stories straight. I went to Ed Warren and told him the problem. He laughed. "They're crazy!" he said. "Everybody who comes to us is crazy, otherwise why would they come to US? Just do the best you can. You write scary books, right? That's why we hired you. Use whatever you can of their story, make the rest up, and make it scary." And that's what I did. The book IN A DARK PLACE is a combination of elements of the family's story and stuff I made up -- because it was a for-hire writing job, AND THAT'S WHAT I WAS TOLD TO DO. If this family is saying they had "little involvement" in this book, then they are bald-faced liars. They were involved from beginning to end, and THEY COLLECTED THE CHECK FOR IT. They were deeply involved in IN A DARK PLACE, and they were PAID for it -- their names are on the cover of the book along with my name and Ed and Lorraine Warren. I never got to meet their allegedly ill son -- I was only allowed to speak with him briefly on the phone. Although there was much talk of his illness, it was NEVER verified for me, although he did have a drug problem. It turned out that the girls in the family who claimed to have been groped by so-called invisible, demonic hands were actually groped by HIM. The Warrens and their nephew John Zaffis claimed they had videotape that clearly showed supernatural activity inside the house, and they told me numerous times that they would SHOW me that videotape. Somehow, during our time together, they just couldn't manage to find it. Not only did I not see that footage, I never saw an actual VHS videotape at ALL. Since my experience with the Warrens and this family, I've talked to other writers who have written books for Ed and Lorraine, and they've told me THE EXACT SAME STORY. This is how the Warrens have always worked. They find a very "emotional" family with claims of some supernatural activity in their lives, convince them there's money to be made if they just shape this into a better "story" (and this family was very eager to make money -- at the time I knew them, the mother was involved in some kind of interstate lottery scam), then they hire a writer of horror fiction to write it up as a book -- "Make it scary," Ed told me -- and they've got themselves a package, a piece of merchandise that they can hawk on talk shows and that the Warrens can discuss in their VERY lucrative lectures. And perhaps they can convince someone in Hollywood to make a movie of it. Of course, in THIS case, the book I wrote has been shoved aside and isn't involved in the making of the movie THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT. It will be VERY interesting to see how much of this movie contains the material that I WAS TOLD TO MAKE UP. We'll see.

HI, did you really make all the things in THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT up, none of it is true.
I beleive in things like that, when I was 13 I seen a true life form stood outside the living room window, it was raining and the rain went a reddish colour.
Well obviously, I was classed as seeing things, except what baffled my mother and the phychiatrist is the old man, I described with the flat cap and scar on his left cheek, was my mother told the phychiatrist was her father, who I had never seen, he died while she was pregnant with me. I had never seen any photos of him, I had lived with my father up until that age (13 ) and then ran away to her. Weird or what. Mind you she always played spirits in the glass and got the devil

My friends lived in this house and we never experienced anything, and neither did they, in all the time they lived there. There was nothing even remotely creepy about this place. Try and find the Hard Copy episode that aired about this place where the interviewer was laughing at the Warrens because this story was obviously so contrived. BTW, I DO believe in the supernatural, but there is nothing going on in this house.

I think that people are to sceptical, and just put others down and do not beleive because they are scared one way or another.
I watched the film, some things were far fetched, but then I can really beleive a lot of what I seen.
I have seen that was a ghost when i was 13 years old, and when you tell people you get made out to be an idiot, so a lot of people keep what they see to themselves, to afraid to be labelled a Nutter.

If my memory serves, this family bought the house cause it was dirt cheap...and it was cheap because it used to be a Funeral. So instead of removing the disection tables and what not they left them, AND made thier two sons LIVE in the basement with the old freezer and tables. Cmon now.....
