D.J. Caruso Wants Shia LaBeouf to Be His 'Y: The Last Man'

If there was only one man left on earth, would you want that man to be Shia LaBeouf? And I'm talking to all the women out there, because while there aren't any men left, there are loads and loads of women. Yup, I'm talking about the comic Y:The Last Man, which is set to become yet another comic-turned-movie -- and it will be directed by D.J. Caruso. The director, as you may or may not know, previously helmed Disturbia -- watched it rule at the box office -- and has since become the go-to guy for films that involve Shia LaBeouf. In fact, the two are teaming up once again on Eagle Eye, a thriller set to shoot once Shia is finished with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. And after Eagle Eye is finished, Caruso will jump onto Y: The Last Man -- and right now it's looking like the lead role in that flick (a guy by the name of Yorick Brown) will most likely go to Shia ... well, if both Caruso and LaBeouf have their way.
See, LaBeouf has already gone on record saying how much he'd love to play the title character, but now Caruso is adding his two cents. While speaking to MTV, the director had this to say when asked about Shia's potential involvement: "This is funny, but unbeknownst to me: Shia was already chasing this part prior to anything. I haven't talked to him yet about it because he's off shooting 'Indiana Jones 4,' but Shia is the right type and the right personality because you want to have the humor, but you also want to have the seriousness. So we'll talk about it when we get there." Sounds to me like Shia is the top choice, although when MTV asked fans who they think should play the part, names like Mark Ruffalo, Tobey Maguire and Ryan Gosling spewed out. What, no love for The Shia? Originally created by Matthew Brian K. Vaughn, Y: The Last Man will be adapted for the screen by Disturbia writer Carl Ellsworth (with help from Caruso as well). Those interested in learning more about Y: The Last Man should definitely check out the rest of this MTV article; it's packed with all sorts of juicy info. So what do you fans think: Shia or no Shia?

Psst... It was created by Brian K. Vaughan, not Matthew Vaughn.

This is one of the best comics out today. If you haven't read it pick up the Graphic Novels (or wait a few months with the last issue on its way I'm sure they;ll put all 60 out in one huge book soon)
I really think Shia is perfect for this role and hope to see him on the big screen as Yorick.

I have most of the comics and like most have said, this is a great story and has great writing. It is probably one of the more interesting and funny non-superhero comics out there. With that said, I really don't see Shia as the lead. I enjoyed him in Disturbia and Transformers, but just because he's the "it" guy of 2007 doesn't mean he should get this role. I don't have anyone really in mind as of yet, but it is another everyman character (ala Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man) who is more or less a reluctant hero. I would like to see someone lesser known in this role. Nothing against Shia, but I just don't see him in this role.

I loved the series, but I don't know how well it can be adapted into a movie, or even a few movies. I liked the HBO series idea better. If you look at the epic tales that can be told by a well done TV, vs. the one big story you get in a movie, I think TV would win in this case.
Some of the fun for me was in the big moments, but a lot of it is in the development of the characters, and the world itself. Could a movie gets pirates, one breasted motorcycle gangs, secret free mason spies, and a middle east ruled by Israel all in one movie? And that's just a few of my favorite groups.
As for Shia LaBeouf, I think he could do a good job. He isn't the only young actor that can play awkward and heroic, but like was stated, he is the 'it' guy, and that does help sell tickets. Anything that can make the investors feel safe, and hopefully give the director a little more leeway (and the money to do it right) is a good thing.

No way are Mark Ruffalo, Tobey Maguire, or Ryan Gosling right for Yorick. Shia seems like he could pull this off nicely.

okay, now that i have heard that shia was considered for this part, if he doesn't get chosen, i will seriously not go and see the movie. i really think that he will be perfect for the role, and do it amazingly. i know that i am going a little over-the-top on this, but i really do think that they will be making a huge mistake if they don't pick him! who agrees with me?!?!?!?!?!?!
love always,
