Dark Horizons has spotlighted an interview with Quentin Tarantino that will have geeks everywhere bemoaning what might have been. Tarantino has turned down an offer to direct an episode of the hit NBC drama Heroes. His reason? He doesn't know what Heroes is. QT told The Sun, "They were trying to get me to do one. I haven't even seen the f***ing show. What the f*** is Heroes?" Well Quentin, if you're reading this, you ain't missing much. Heroes is probably the most overrated show on television right now. Somehow, it has captured the love of critics and audiences alike, but I watched the entire first season and found it punishingly dull. I know, I know, chew me out. I just don't get it.
Film directors dabbling in television has become quite the trend lately. The great Spike Lee directed the pilot of Shark. Kevin Smith directed the pilot for the soon-to-premiere (and very good) Reaper, and will write and direct an episode of the Heroes spinoff Origins. Tarantino is no stranger to television either, having shot episodes of both CSI and ER (maybe that's why he wasn't interested in Heroes -- he only does shows with initials for titles). I was about thirteen when Pulp Fiction was in theaters, and though I begged my parents, they wouldn't let me see it. I remember sitting down to watch the QT-directed ER (still the only episode of that show I've seen), trying to convince myself that it would be just as cool. Not quite. If you want your Heroes fix, the second season premieres Monday. If you want your Tarantino fix, the expanded version of Death Proof is in stores today.

Speaking of overrated, there couldn't be a director more overrated than Quentin Tarantino.

Isn't "overrated" just your opinion, say, in comparison to all of those who say it is very good? Why not just say you don't like it... that would seem more reasonable.

I know why you found it dull. Maybe it has something to do with the 45 minutes of stagnancy followed by 5 minutes of meaningful plot advancement. Week in, week out. So formulaic, And boring. They started doing this crap before anyone had an opportunity to get emotionally connected with the characters.

I'd take one series of Heroes over every series of Lost. And please QT, stay away from it, I am still trying to wake up from the induced sleep you put me through during your CSI two-parter!

I'm one of those few that doesn't get Heroes either. And I don't get Tarantino. Just not my style.

I love Heroes, but I'm glad QT's not getting involved. I think Pulp Fiction is one of the most overrated movies in the history of film, it's just not that good.
As for Heroes it's amazing, although I understand it's not for everyone, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

I love Heroes and know a whole helluva lot more about storytelling than Mr. Short Attention Span. Tarantino is a good, if overrated, director but the show doesn't need him.

Heroes popularity isn't a annoying to me as the continued popularity of absolute senseless drivel like CSI. There are few shoes that spoonfeed and talk-down to audiences like those insipid CSI series. I've now sat through 5 epsisodes of CSI and I'm convinced it's a clear sign of just how stupid Americans have become. Nothing original, interesting, though-provoking occurs in the formulaic plots that plod along with workman-like proficiency. Want character development? Look elsewhere. Acting? Keep moving. Dialog? Please.
QT had great potential - Res Dogs and his script for True Romance were great. Since then it's been all downhill.

I'm totally with you and Coma on Heroes. I tried, I really did. Everyone in my house loves it, and lots of my friends do too. I just don't see the appeal. Hiro is the only likeable person on that show, and he's not in it enough to make the rest of it worth my while.

An above poster brilliantly described Heroes, Lost, CSI (and spin-offs), Law & Order (at least the last ten seasons and spin-offs), 24, et cetera.
"Nothing original, interesting, though-provoking occurs in the formulaic plots that plod along with workman-like proficiency."
Tarantino is right on this one....and I think he is overrated.

Heroes still feels like a victim of its popularity. It was supposed to be a little nothing show that nobody really cared about, and became this phenomenon for NBC. They messed with the advertising, messed with the plot, the concept, and almost certainly messed with the finale. What started off as an engaging show with some truly fantastic episodes became a drawn-out mess with brief spurts of brilliance.
A shame, because I loved the show when it started, and loved a few of the later episodes, but became disillusioned by the end. I'll give season 2 a shot though, but I'm not holding my breath.

I agree with Romeo. I don't think Heroes is the best thing on earth, but who the hell is Tarantino anyways?

Frankly, Tarantino comes across sounding like an arrogant asshole. Couldn't he have just responded with something like: "I'm flattered but to be honest I've never seen the show. And I just can't get into directing an episode of a show that I haven't seen. Plus, my plate is full at the moment." Instead, he has to answer like a dickweed. Fuck him. I'm sorry if I sound harsh and if I'm trolling, but, really, come on -- professional, respectful courtesy is always honorable. He needs to be called out on simply being an unprofessional jerk.

Actually, Tarantino starred (not directed though) in the show Alias. He plays some kind of action villain in there. Oh, and I definitely agree Heroes is overrated.

Ok, you don't like Heroes. And you've only seen 1 episode of ER, one of the highest rated, longest running dramas of all time. You watched the entire season on DVD, not during the season.
Uh, what exactly qualifies you to write about TV as a critic? Yeah, I thought so.

Heroes is one of those shows where when you're watching it, it's the best thing on tv. But once the dust has settled and the season is done, the flaws of the show begin to outweigh the positives. I have a feeling this will be one of those shows that we'll all look back in 5 or 6 years and say 'meh'. This show will fall in the same category as 24, Lost, CSI, Survivor are in now(just to name a few). If anyone recalls after the first seasons of these shows, all the cliche's 'best show ever', 'it's amazing' kept getting posted and it was blasphemy to say you didn't like them. Oh well, only time will tell.
Anyone looking for great TV, one word: Dexter.
