Michael Bay Might Jump Ship on 'Transformers 2'
Filed under: Action, Deals, RumorMonger, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
While I was into a lot of boy-themed entertainment as a kid -- The Incredible Hulk, He-Man, The Super Friends -- Transformers was just something I could never get into. However, there are masses upon masses of fanboys who could, and as we all know, Transformers hit the big screen under Michael "Big Explosions, Cash-Lovin', Ladies Man" Bay this year. After putting in an estimated $150 million, the flick grossed approximately $310 million. That's not a bad chunk of change, so, of course, that would mean that a sequel is sure to follow -- but it might not be with Bay.According to SuperHeroHype, the director got chatty on his official message board about the flick and its potential sequel (the board is here, but you need a password to enter). He thinks the IMAX print of Transformers, which will be released with extra scenes this week, is "freakin AWESOME," and that they "need to bottle the magic of IMAX because it's the future of cinema." But as for "Transformers 2, well that's another story. Iching [sic] to work pre-strike (June) so I might jump ship and come back a year or so later cause people at the studio have been dragging for two months. Not sure why. I'll keep you informed." So it sounds like he wants to secure some projects before the strike, and would rather risk losing the sequel than waiting around. Bay isn't universally loved in the world of cinema, so what do you think -- would Bay bailing be a blessing?

I still haven't seen Transformers. Should I win some type of award for "Restraint Displayed By A Geeky Child Of The 80's"?

Considering the concept of robots fighting is crap, Bay did a damn good job of making the human parts interesting.

For people who don't quite understand the fans of Michael Bay and have an IMDB account, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0988032/board/thread/72050000?d=83165109#83165109

It scares the hell out of me that people like him are allowed to go to public movie-theaters.

Bay made the human parts highly uninteresting. Even though it was fun overall, Transformers did have scenes that could have been an a much better, epic sci-fi movie. So while I'd probably have a good time watching Bay's Transformers 2, I'd love to see a better directer make an actual good film out of it.

Well I enjoyed Transformers but I don't really think that not having Bay is going to determine whether or not the sequel is good. Don't get me wrong, he can do action, but most of the dialogue was complete crap like most of Bay's films.

I thought the human element was surprisingly funny, shia played the part perfectly and had me in stitches as for the rest, my only complaint being that some scenes where cut to fast and were hard on the eyes, it was a perfectly enjoyable summer popcorn flick and anyone who enjoyed the originals or doesn't have their head up there arse would think so to i imagine

The movie was OKAY. If you shut your brain off and pretend your 8 years old you'll have a good time.
I loved Transfomers growing up. But I hate Michael Bay. Especially since I hold him responsible for the death of Jazz and making almost every robot in the movie a GM product.
I'm not sorry to see him go. Now that there is a chance he won't do the sequel I have hope it will be better than the first.

I didn't realize Bay wrote the screenplay for Transformers. I love when people hold the director responsible for every aspect of a movie. Bay isn't a bad director and his movies definitely have good action but his involvement should always be a red flag because studios seek him out when they need action and special effects to make up for a poor script.
The human element wasn't terrible in Transformers but there was way too much of it. It would have been much better with 20-30 minutes of human time cut out. Especially the whole subplot with the hot chick's criminal father and everythin with John Tuturro.

Ha...I have to agree with John R about killing Jazz. What the hell! Also, the movie was hot because it basically turned all of us born in the 80's into precisely that...8 year olds!lol. It almost scared me how I "transformed" (pun intended) into a little kid during the movie. Regarding Bay, the whole glossy action popcorn flick is like a second language to him. He knows his way around it so even on a bad day he clear hundreds of millions on weekend box office numbers. That being said, I would be interested in seeing another director take a stab at an established hit ala Paul Greengrass with the Bourne series.

The first one took to long to get into the action and when it finnaly did the action was like only 30-45 minutes. so this ONE BETTER HAVE MORE ACTION.

I watched the Dvd and I strongly feel that he did a great job in bringinh the robots to life. My biggest problem was the fact you couldn't identify with some of them. Megatron should have been a Gun. His arguement was that he would have had to be carried around ? Well in all honesty that was an excuse did you ever think of a hand canon with a tripod? Megatron and starscreem were highly unrecognizable as characters. Prime I have to say was the most accurate and best update in the film. The others character could have been changed. But the two leaders and starscream should have remained true. I certainly hope that since megatron is underwater now they find some kind of way to morph him into a cannon ! And have more character development between him and starcream next go around ! I hope Bay you are listening or someone out there ! Over all the movie was good alot better than I expected.
