The Oscar Race Begins!
Filed under: Awards, Fandom, Brad Pitt, Oscar Watch
Though we're still a few months away from the Academy Awards ceremony, folks are itching to wipe off that summer fog and start buzzing about this fall's most anticipated (and Oscar worthy) films. Yup, now is the time studios like to release their "important" flicks -- the kind that feature big-name actors who tackle topics that make you think, make you debate, make you feel good and, occasionally, make you smarter. Right now is the time to get excited -- because once those "For Your Consideration" ads begin crowding your computer screen, and once those end-of-the-year top ten lists start slapping you upside the head, you'll want to run for cover. It's kind of the way I feel about Christmas; one month out it's the sweetest holiday of the year. Once it's over, however, you vow never to look forward to it again.
That being said, Moviefone has gotten the ball rolling with a gallery that takes a look at those early Oscar contenders. Which films are the front-runners for Best Picture? Which actors or actresses have the best chance of walking away with a golden statue come February 28th? A few folks I'm personally stoked to see on that list include John Cusack (who's getting lots of praise for his starring role in the tear-jerker Grace is Gone), Keri Russell (who was absolutely delightful -- and delicious -- in the indie hit Waitress), Casey Affleck (who out-shined Brad Pitt in The Assassination of Jesse James and is also about to show-up his brother Ben big time in bro's directorial debut Gone, Baby, Gone) and, of course, how can I leave out the Coen Bros' No Country for Old Men and Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd -- three filmmakers who I'd love to see pick up an Oscar this year. There's plenty more to debate, so head on over to Moviefone to check out the gallery, then come back here and tell us where they went right and where they went so, so wrong.

Where the F*** is Don CHeadle for "Talk To Me"???, Also, why isn't Talk To Me in the race for Best Picture. It was by far the best movie i've ever seen this year. Please, people get the word out.

I hope people don't forget about Zodiac and Rescue Dawn in several categories. I'd also like to see Knocked Up get at least the recognition 40 Year Old Virgin did with it's best screenplay nod. 3:10 to Yuma needs to be passed by, it's an average western, people are trying to make it this "revival of the western" movie when it's not that good.

Where's Chris Cooper as a potential Best Actor nominee for his portrail as Robert Hanssen in "Breach"? His acting talent took what would otherwise have been a good, but also standard, historical spy thriller and took it to the next level. How a terrific performance with the complexity that Chris Cooper brings to the role is totally ignored during the Oscar buzz is beyond me.

I concur with Eric about Chris Cooper's performance in "Breach." I'm also happy that you guys made sure to cite Julie Christie in "Away from Her": the movie opened rather early in the year (as did "Breach," for that matter) but she was magnificent and heart-breaking and deserves to be remembered at Oscar-time. I would also recommend Gordon Pinsent and Olympia Dukakis for the same film-their roles are less showy but their performances were equally fine.

Early Predictions:
Tom Hanks is long overdur for an Oscar nod. Luckily, his role in "Charlie Wilson's War" looks Oscar worthy.
Screen favorite, Meryl Streep is bound to get nominated for the 15th time for either "Lions for Lambs" or "Rendition"

Zodiac had better receive nominations for at least cinematography, directing, and picture.
I don't expect it to win anything, but it's high damn time Fincher received some attention from the academy. Especially for this amazing, amazing movie.

A blaring omission is the film STEPHANIE DALEY, which should be recognized for (at the very least) Amber Tamblyn's Best Supporting Actress tour-de-force as a teen accused of infanticide, and should also be considered from Tilda Swinton's incredibly pathos-laded performance as the psychologist in charge of discovering the truth.
