George Clooney Injured in Motorcycle Accident
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
Fear not ladies, he's OK! While driving his motorcycle in what appears to be Weehawken, New Jersey, George Clooney and friend Sarah Larson collided with another vehicle they were apparently trying to pass from the right-hand side, so says Variety. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon. Clooney suffered a broken rib and some scrapes, and Larson suffered a broken foot. Ouch. From the looks of it, Clooney sped up to pass a car on the right (something you're not allowed to do in Jersey), with intentions of making a right turn. However, the car beside him crossed into the right lane and collided with Clooney. No word on whether that car, a 1999 Mazda (this is Jersey, George, not Beverly Hills) had its turn signal on.
A spokesman for the Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, New Jersey said Clooney has "a broken rib, it's very painful and it'll take a long time to heal." Currently, Clooney has several films in different stages of production. He'd been shooting Leatherheads back in July (when images surfaced from the set), and according to IMDb he's currently filming the Coen Bros. next film, Burn After Reading. No word on whether either film will be delayed because of the accident (I'm not sure how long it takes for someone to be able to work with a broken rib -- never had one myself). The accident is still under investigation; right now it's a he said/she said sort of thing. Nothing against motorcycles, and the people that drive them, but here in New York folks just do what they want --riding between lanes, swerving in and out of traffic. It gets real annoying. But as long as everyone is fine, and not seriously injured -- that's what really counts. Clooney's next film, Michael Clayton, arrives in theaters next month.

Drivers here in New Jersey also regularly make right-hand turns from left lanes, which is what I think Clooney is claiming happened, and left-hand turns from right ones. Often, this happens with no particular warning.
Since I'm frequently held up or nearly hit by folks who decide at the very last minute that what they really want to do is turn THAT way, I'm inclined to believe him.

While it's true what Terri says about Jersey drivers turning from the wrong lane, Clooney has already admitted to trying to pass on the right, which is illegal in New jersey. This a case where both are at fault, but being that one guy was in a vehicle surrounded by steel, while the other two were on two wheels protected by leather and cotton, I would think that Clooney should have been more careful.
I also tend to believe that Clooney may have not been paying much attention because of the view. Boulevard East in Weehawken sits 300 feet above the Hudson, right across from Midtown Manhattan, and the view is spectacular. If you are not used to it, and don't stop, you will tend to look at the sight rather than looking at the road.
In regards to "this is Jersey, not Beverly Hills", that section of Weehawken has million dollar mansions and even some villas, sitting right on top of the cliffs with the same amazing views of the city right from their backyard windows. There's a flow of Ferraris and other high end cars driving on Boulevard East all the time.

I find it hard to believe that George Clooney or anyone in their right mind would speed up at the same split second that the motor vehicle to the left had its right Turn Signal Flashing.
Last year in the USA, Over 23,000 people(60 a day) were Killed in crashes the NHTSA calls Unintended Lane Change Crashes, As a professional driver since 1974 I can tell you the crashes are not Intended but most of the lane changes are, Drivers just look and go, Unfortunately there are too many drivers using this behavior at the same time.
A persons life can either be lost or saved in an instant.
When drivers use their turn signals before they go flying in their Lethal Weapons, from right to left there-by allowing anyone nearby that Split Second Extra time to react to.
Living on the roadways for over 33 years now, I have seen People Killed in front of my face, because the person or persons involved had not first signaled to allow anyone nearby that Split Second time to react to causing the deadly SWERVE ect ect.
I is against the Law in all 50 States to change Lanes without first signaling, how many people have to be Killed and Injuried before We have a Serious crack down on Turn Signal Enforcement?

Actor George Clooney was Almost Killed while ridding his motorcycle, because the mazda car next to him had it's left turn signal Flashing and then made an Abrupt Right turn In front of George Clooney,
Thereby causing the crash.
If the mazda car would have had It's Right turn signal Flashing, There is no way George Clooney would have Sped up at that same Split Second on the Right side of the mazda car.
This is a Serious Problem that is happening every day on American roadway's,
and it is responsible for thousands of Preventable Death's a Year.
The NHTSA need's to quit sweeping it under the carpet.
For the NHTSA to continue to ignore the lack of turn signal Law enforcement(when changing lane's) with 23,000 Death's a year in the USA attributed to what they call Unintended Lane Change Crashes, Is nothing less than Criminal on their part!
