Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to Write and Star in 'Paul'
Filed under: Comedy, Casting, Fandom, Scripts, Home Entertainment
Fans of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz (i.e. pretty much everybody) rejoice! The stars of those films, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are teaming up again for a movie called Paul. Pegg and Frost are writing the screenplay, but this one will not be a full Shaun/Fuzz reunion, as director Edgar Wright is not involved. The director for Paul has yet to be chosen. Pegg tells MTV Movies Blog the film is "a road movie about two British geeks in America," and it will be shot here in the U.S. Sorry, I know that doesn't tell you much! The film will not have the usual Pegg-ripping-on-Frost dynamic they've perfected. Pegg says, "No, it's different actually. I'm the bitch in this one. This time Simon's the bitch!"
For my money, Pegg is not quite as hilarious as his British comedian compatriots Ricky Gervais (I bow to The Office) and Steve Coogan (just now getting into It's Alan Partridge and loving it), but he does make me laugh. He's becoming a major player in the states, starring in the new romantic comedy Run, Fat Boy, Run (you can read James' not-quite-a-rave-but-not-quite-a-pan review here), and co-starring in the upcoming How to Lose Friends and Alienate People. I loved Shaun, and was on the fence with Hot Fuzz until the glorious shoot-em-up finale made me a believer. Speaking of Pegg and Frost, does anyone have any idea how to get their television program Spaced on DVD here in America? I know it's online here and there, but I detest watching anything longer than two minutes on my computer. Thanks!

Patrick, I think Spaced was on BBC America once. I saw it on an import DVD because my DVD player is all-region. One way or the other (get an all-region player, it is worth it), you MUST see the show if you liked their films.
Oh, and I caught Run Fatboy Run last night. Not as brilliant as Shaun/Fuzz, but still pretty funny. However, it is Dylan Moran (David from Shaun of the Dead) who really steals the movie. He's hilarious.

Spaced was shown several times in edited form in the US (Trio) and then on BBC America. I'm still sort of surprised that it hasn't made it on DVD in the States, and heard rumors that there was potentially a problem with clearing all the music for R1 release, but don't know for sure.
It's relatively cheap for the 3-DVD set via various online sellers (Amazon UK, sendit.co.uk, etc.). Invest in a cheap region-free player (my Philips DVP642 was $50), and just order it from the UK.

I ordered my copy from Amazon UK. However, you'll need a DVD player capable of playing Region 2 and PAL discs.
AFAIK, there are no plans to release "Spaced" here in the States, due to a number of licensing issues (with the soundtrack, I believe).

You guys are right on the money in regards to the soundtrack issue. In the series, they used some great music, and said music plays an important part in key scenes throughout the entire series. I guess licensing issues are much different in the UK than they are here, because if they were to try and distribute here, the payment(s) they'd have to make for just the music alone would be bigger than the entire budget of the two seasons of the show.

While I find Ricky Gervais funny, his shtick is becoming tired and he is possibly one of Britain's most overrated comedians. Simon Pegg, however, has never failed to impress me. Even in lesser known shows as "Hippies" and "Big Train" (see: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zn6Z9djh8eA - maybe NSFW, unless you're American and don't know what "wanking" means..?)

SPACED - best British television series ever made. On a par with the simpsons in my humble opinion. Quite clearly would be very difficult to follow up in any format.

Even in Britain, "Spaced" didn't get a fair crack of the whip. Dodgy schedules and recurring jokes made it a fractured experience, but when bought on dvd and watched in it's entirety, it's one of the best series out of the UK in recent years. Beg, borrow or steal a copy of the two series'. Even better is Black Books with Dylan Moran. Sharper, funnier and more surreal. Enjoy Partridge, but get "Knowing Me, Knowing You", the spoof chatshow where the character really took off (and "The Day Today" where he originated).

Wow, this sounds very neat and definitely original. Films just seem to be edging away for originality these days but this one sounds like a breath of fresh air. And with this duo, I'm sure it will be nothing short of absolutely fantastic. I will be looking out for this, for sure.
