The Jonas Brothers Head to 'Camp Rock'
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Casting, Family Films
I really don't get the appeal of being, or wanting your kids to be, a big star and celebrity -- well, besides the greed. Essentially, these kids give up most of their childhood, start working at a very young age, lose most of the benefits of a private life out of the spotlight, and have to try and figure out who they are while continually getting buzzed up and knocked down. They usually head from great young careers into varying degrees of adult turmoil and image-shedding. Nevertheless, there's always the new, fresh young things. This time around, it's the Jonas Brothers, Kevin, Joe, and Nick, who are already doing better than their predecessors, those awkward Hansons.First, there is their music, a concert special next month, and an upcoming spy comedy TV show for Disney, called J.O.N.A.S. (Junior Operatives Networking as Spies) -- which could very well become a feature if it's popular. Topping that off, The Hollywood Reporter has posted that they're also working on a music movie called Camp Rock. The flick is currently filming in Toronto, and could very well be the next High School Musical. It stars the brothers as members of a group called Connect 3, and they're "celebrity guest counselors at a prestigious summer camp for aspiring musicians." It's also kind of like the musical Cinderella -- this young girl wants to spend her time at the camp, but can only be there if she works the kitchen. One of the pop stars hears her voice, and he sets out on a mission to figure out who she is.
Helmed by Matthew Diamond, the music feature will air on the Disney Channel next summer. President of entertainment at the channel, Gary Marsh says: "This is an extraordinary opportunity for us to... launch them into the stratosphere..." Let's hope they know how to survive in the next layer of the Earth's atmosphere.

In what way are the Jonas Brothers "doing better than" Hanson? When Hanson were the age the brothers Jonas are now, they were headlining shows, with no help whatsoever from the Disney corporation. They also were Grammy-nominated, and had a single that was #1 in 27 countries. Now, ten years later, Hanson have built their own record label and their own recording studios. Their most recent self-released albums have both charted in the top 5 on Billboard's independent albums chart. They are currently on tour, and selling out most of their shows. The jury is still out on whether or not the Jonas Brothers will grow into being a credible adult band. Hanson have already made that transition.

maybe Hanson is good, but the jonas brothers shows sell out in the first few minutes, they don't do private gigs, and they are a teen sensation, with their own(almost) tv show, and not to mention they went from jonas who? to jonas brothers!!! in just two albums! That should give you an idea of how popular they are.
by the way their song, SOS, is #1 on itunes

How quickly they forget. In 1997, Hanson was many times huger than the Jonas Brothers are now. They sold out stadiums and were certified multi-platinum. And Hanson's fame came with their first major label release, so the fact that the Jonas Brothers hit pay dirt with their second doesn't really prove that they're bigger.

Hanson my have done will with their first album but when it came to the second one it do so well, and the second album is what can either make or braek your career. Yes they did do a come back album but that as well did not do so well either. On the other hand you have another band of brothers that have put out two albums all with in a one year span (its about time 2006, and seld titled 2007). Disney is just helping them along the way. Making them even bigger stars. I tryed to get tickets to their show and they were sold out with in the first 10 minutes, it took hanson a lot longer to sale out that fast. and by 1998 they we're competting with groups like backstreet boys and NSYNC. This boys rock harder and are much more talented then Hanson will ever be.

This is getting really silly. I'm going to try to explain my point a little more clearly, because none of you kids seem to be understanding it at all.
You can't compare a ten year old band like Hanson to the brand new Jonas group. The only fair comparison would be to compare the bands at similar stages of their careers.
If we compare early Hanson to early Jonas, Hanson own the Jonas brothers. Hanson's first album went multi-platinum within six months of its release. Their Christmas album was the biggest selling holiday album of 1997. That and their retrospective both went platinum. Their second studio album, which you are so anxious to denigrate, went gold. According to Billboard and the RIAA website, the Jonas Brothers have yet to go gold. Hanson had sold eight million records within a year of being signed. The Jonas Brothers have sold fewer than 500,000. Hanson also got lots of critical acclaim, were named #1 in an important critics poll, graced the covers of Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide, and were Grammy-nominated
We can't yet compare mature Hanson to mature Jonas, because the Jonas brothers haven't reached that level yet. We don't even know whether they'll still be a band in ten years or not. So, the only fair comparison at this point is early Hanson to early Jonas, and there is no way that you can make a convincing case for Jonas outshining Hanson.

Anyone who truly believes that the Jonas Brothers are as famous -- let alone MORE famous -- than Hanson were in their prime could not have been born yet in 1997. Or at least, they must not yet have been conscious of popular culture at that time. Hanson were EVERYWHERE; they had the #1 single for most of the summer, they were constantly on TV (NOT the Disney channel), talk show hosts used them in their monologues, etc. There wasn't anybody who didn't know who Hanson were. The Jonas Brothers are presently only well-known to the Disney crowd, and they're not even the most popular Disney act. Time will tell if they can transcend Disney and evolve into being an adult band like Hanson have, or if they will fall into obscurity like The Moffatts did.

why do you guys feel you have to rip people and their careers to shreds or compare them to to someone else? does it honestly leav you with a feeling of self-satisfaction to settle the online "hanson/jonas" debate? it should be about their fucking music, people, either listen to it or don't, but stop getting so worked up over some online opinion. hanson has do what they do music wise and should be respected for their success and the jonas brothers are trying to reach success at doing a thing that they like to do and should likewise be respected for pursuing it. it's stuff like comparing how many promotional spots someone does or how much we can over-manufacture something to justify a musical career that really shows how far down the music industry has gone. now there's an argument worth making. i mean really, think about it.

Lana: I basically agree with you. My only goal in commenting on this article was to challenge the statement in the original article, "This time around, it's the Jonas Brothers, Kevin, Joe, and Nick, who are already doing better than their predecessors, those awkward Hansons." I still believe that statement is completely indefensible, and none of the other comments here have proved otherwise. If Monika Bartyzel had found a way to write about the Jonas Brothers without blindly bashing Hanson, I wouldn't have commented at all.

You're right in this debate. The Hanson were big in '97.
But, on the flip side, in 1997, i was four. My world revolved around barney.
But the Jonas Brothers are NOW, not ten years ago. sure, they are only on the way to being what the Hanson were ten years ago, and the BGs were 20 and 30 years ago, but that doesn't take away from their music.
I may be part of the "Disney Crowd", but, in 7 years or so, its gonna be my generation in charge.
And we're gonna want the jonas brothers.

Emmy, nobody is trying to deny you your Jonas Brothers. Fine with me if you want them. That does not change the fact that the statement in this article about them "already doing better than" those "awkward Hansons" is wrong and indefensible. I have nothing against the Jonas Brothers. I just don't see why it should be necessary to bash Hanson when writing about them.

Ok well i thnk the jonas brother are better than hanson . They have loyal fans, theyre HOTTTTT and became very famous with just onesong. just because hanson sold more albums than the Jonas bvrothers doesnt really make a difference. because back then they didnt have limewire or frogsplash to download music by bootleg. This may sond akward coming form a kid that is still in her tweens but Jonas Brother are more of a hit then Hanson. If you think about it, the Jonas Brothers have probaly had more downloads than Hanson! People im not agianstHanson, but Jonas Brothers are BETTER!

Well, Shannon, that's your opinion, and I'm certainly not about to start an argument with a "kid who is still in her tweens". Perhaps in ten years, you will still love the Jonas Brothers. Perhaps not. Perhaps the Jonas Brothers will still be around in ten years. Perhaps not. It's too early to tell.
Hanson have been a band for fifteen years, and they have successfully made the transition to being a credible adult band. For that alone, they deserve more respect than to be compared negatively to a band of youngsters.
I've noticed that your treasured Jonas Brothers even mention Hanson in a song? Too funny!

What's even funnier is the fact that of all of the Jonas Brothers fans that have responded, not a single one seems to understand what I'm saying.
Once again: my point is that it is unnecessary and wrong, when writing about the Jonas Brothers, to throw in an indefensible insult against Hanson.
I suppose that the next time I log on, I'll find three more responses from Jonas fans telling me that I'm wrong, because the Jonas Brothers are just soooooo HOT, and everybody loves to download their music for free.
I must say that this has been amusing.

so what i have read is that the early hanson has beat out the early jonas brothers. this is true. but in another comment i read that the jonas brothers second album (although it sold many many more than its about time) it didn't compare to hansons second album. well i didn't look that up to see if its true or not but we cant look on record sales alone. the jonas brothers' current single SOS is #1 on itunes, many more fans and teenagers buy most of their music off the internet, rather than going out and buying it in the store. this option was not available when hanson was popular. i agree with some of you, but others, not so much. everyone needs to look at the whole picture not just little parts. lets wait and see in the next few years who really comes on top!

Thanks, Sylvia, but it's pretty difficult to discuss with a bunch of tweens. But I hear you.
Another thing they seem to be missing is the fact JB are being manufactured by Disney to capitilise on the tween market, hence the hysteria and 'success.' Hanson broke on to the scene based on their music, which has consistently been pop/soft-rock/folk with an old school blues and soul influence. Hanson did not choose to be a global phenomenon, JB are being marketed as one. To the tweens reading there is a difference. Only time will tell whether or not JB will be here in 10 years time. For one thing their music is very 'faddish' and they're not guaranteed that 10 years from now the pop/faux-punk/pseudo-rock with the 'indie' image will still be a trend.
