Fantastic Fest Review: Aachi and Ssipak

Nothing makes me feel at home at Fantastic Fest like a cute Korean animated movie about a futuristic world powered by excrement, where tiny blue mutants with diapers on their heads are threatening to take over the world in pursuit of addictive popsicles. I looked forward to seeing Aachi and Ssipak just for the weirdness factor, and I wasn't disappointed.
Aachi and Ssipak is set in a world where the source of energy is poop -- from humans -- and citizens are encouraged to contribute as much as possible, to the point where everyone has a chip installed in the pertinent location. People who give most are rewarded with Juicy Bars, a drug in popsicle form that turns out to be addictive -- those who consume too many turn into the child-sized blue mutants of The Diaper Gang. The government "Chief" has commissioned a super-cyborg cop to thwart the Diaper Gang's attempts to steal as many Juicy Bars as possible.
The Aachi and Ssipak of the title are a couple of low-rent thugs who are pulled into the fights against the Diaper Gang and the Juicy Bar smuggling rings. Aachi is a short redhead with goggles who might remind you of Beavis and Butthead rolled together, and Ssipak is a tall bald guy who develops a hopeless crush on a porn star who has magical powers involving Juicy Bars and her butt.
Despite the constant obsession and conversation about rear ends and what comes out of them, we see very little actual poop onscreen -- it's all talk and no action, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your personal taste. Personally I didn't mind, although it feels almost like false advertising. There's a lot of violence -- I'm amazed any of the Diaper Gang is left at the end, since so many are killed in a number of creative ways -- but it's animated violence, which doesn't have the gravity of live-action, especially in a comedy like this. Still, this is probably not a movie you want to share with kids, unless you're okay with the kids seeing cute mutant creatures torn apart, references to anal sex, and the lead female character's pornarific wardrobe.
Aachi and Ssipak is crazy and fun and doesn't always make much sense. The animation style is cute, bouncy and surreal, and the film is full of pop-culture references. Someone sitting next to me noted spoofs of The Matrix and Battleship Potemkin in the same scene, within a few seconds of one another, while I spotted quotes from Star Wars and Jerry Maguire in a different scene. The climactic fight scenes go on a little too long -- I was impatient for the action to wrap up and the film to end, although it's only about 90 minutes long. Still, overall it's a delightfully bizarre film that makes you feel like maybe you've had a few of those Juicy Bars yourself.
