Monday Morning Poll: Superheroes or Supervillains
Filed under: Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Monday Morning Poll
The other night, my friend was over and I noticed him watching Superman Returns for the umpteenth time on television. When I made fun of him for watching it again (keep in mind, the two of us have had lengthy discussions regarding Returns, in which we always wind up pointing out what went wrong moreso than what went right), he claimed he was only watching it because it was in HD. (See, the film was playing on one of the three HD movie channels that I currently have at home.) So after I poked fun at him, he went in this direction:
HIM: I could've made a much better Superman flick than Bryan Singer.
ME: Oh yeah?
HIM: Yeah, and in my movie, I'd want you to play Lex Luther.
ME: I don't want to play Lex Luther -- he's an a**hole.
HIM: So then who would you want to play? Actually, that's a good question -- if you could be any superhero or supervillain, who would you choose and why?
ME: You know what, this would make a good Monday Morning Poll.
And so here we are. Following our discussion -- and considering all the hoopla currently circling the Justice League of America movie -- I thought it would be fun to ask readers which superhero or supervillain they'd like to be. Our conversation sort of ended after that -- and I'm not sure why -- so I never got to give an answer. Since I was obsessed with The Incredible Hulk as a kid, I'd probably have to go with him. Sure, he's all conflicted, but girls dig conflicted men. And if someone pissed me off, or tried to assault me, they'd be in a world of hurt. I guess Superman would be cool too, but I don't like the fact that he's stuck on this one girl ... all the time. And at least Bruce Banner is kind of cool, whereas Clark Kent is an idiot.
So, I ask you: If you could be any superhero or supervillain, who would you choose and why?

Lex Luthor when he isn't being written as a buffoon or a con man, ala Red Son.

Catwoman. I would be Batman, but I'm female, so there's a problem. Batgirl's lame and I don't know much about Batwoman. But I like Selina Kyle: crazy, sexy, cool.

Dr. Doom. He has to be a diplomat, wizard, techno genius and all that plus kill Reed Richards on the side.

It's going to be corny, but I'd be Wonder Woman. When I was young I had WW Underoos and my mom made me matching wristcuffs and the headband. I like the idea of being a strong amazon, tying the bad guys up and making them tell the truth.

Rogue from X-Men. Throw in a bit of an evil bent and I'll just wander around collecting all the power I want. Absolute corruption indeed.

I'd choose either Hulk or Juggernaut, if either one of them were a bit more brainy. Gotta love brute force.

I would want to be the character Dark Claw wich was a mix of Batman and Wolverine that was created when the worlds of DC and Marvel mixed to create an Amalgam Comics series.

Animal Man. He can absorb the powers of any nearby animal. He realized he was written and found ways to exploit the comic book medium (leave panels, leave the page even, awareness of time gaps between panels). Also he got to confront his writer (Grant Morrison) and ask him about his purpose, and why horrible things happen to him and his family.

Superman, stuck on one girl all the time? What about Lori Lemaris, the mermaid he dated in college? Lana Lang, his girlfriend back in Smallville? His brief fling with Wonder Woman? And Terri, the girl who ran the Clark Kent Fan Club back in the 70s? Dude is PIMP.

Aquaman! Because then I could have all the fresh fish I could eat! No, wait... Aquaman sucks.
Galactus. Not quite evil, but not good... just a necessary part of the universe. And pretty much all-powerful.
What? You have to aim high.

Batman cause he is just a man no powers and a genius from the dc universe...... from the marvel universe would have to be spider-man climb or stick to anything the strength to match most foes and he is a genius too...... villain would have to be apocalypse from marvel universe....... villain from the dc universe would be none other than the joker..... he tried to patten fish with smiles in the animated series now that is diabolical...

I'd want to say Professor X but the wheelchair is a deal breaker. So since the question is strictly 'what character would you be' and not 'what powers would you have' it raises questions, given what we know about characters.
Powers are cool, but money and women are important as well. So Batman looks like a strong choice. But he's too messed up in his head, so not much fun there. And since he has no 'powers' you've got to work out all the frickin time - and I'm lazy.
The whole ring thing and test pilot angle makes Green Lantern a good choice, but little blue guys telling you what to do all the time? Nah...
So back to money, babes and powers without working out? Tony Stark. Yup, I don't care much about booze so no problem giving that up. I'd be Iron Man!

This might be corny for some, but Vegeta from Dragonball. The guy is a total and complete badass and gets exponentially stronger after every fight and every workout!

Iron Man without a doubt. Second choice would be Thor. So either a rich genius playboy or a god, not bad eh?
