'Transformers 2' to be Moodier and Deeper?

I can almost picture it now: Transformers 2 opens with a shot of Shia LaBeouf, half naked, lounging on a sofa bed with a cigarette hanging out his mouth. Only it's not a real cigarette because then the movie would have to be rated 'R' -- instead, it's a piece of chewing gum that puffs out smoke. Megan Fox strolls over in something tight, short (but PG-13 tight, so look for that Gap tag). The moodie lighting suggests they've just made sweet teenager love -- but wait -- is that Optimus Prime in the background? It is! And he's recording the entire thing for Michael Bay's MySpace page! Ok, I'm getting ahead of myself here, but according to Scott Farrar, visual-effects supervisor and second-unit director on Transformers, I might not be too far off. Farrar recently shared his thoughts on the sequel (which is currently circling a release date of June 26, 2009) with Sci-Fi Wire.
He says, "It's a circus, and they're going to raise the tight-wire walker a little bit higher next time. But it's all going to be dramatic. I think the commitment is not to just chuck out a sequel. The commitment is -- and this makes us really happy here -- that it's a deep story. There are lots of layers to the story of all these Decepticons, everybody. And so they want to really keep the characters rich." So it's going to be deep and dramatic, but what about the mood? Farrar adds, "I think we've learned a lot about lighting, and I think we can go to much moodier lighting. Lots of things. It'll be improved." Deep, dramatic, moody lighting -- and giant f**king robots! I love it! While it all sort of sounds like an episode of All My Children, Farrar does note that Michael Bay is always "thinking about new, crazy actions. And we're open to that." Phew. And here I thought we'd be getting a sequel featuring robots reading deep, dramatic and moody romance novels to one another. But if you can't wait until 2009, folks will be able to dive into Michael Bay's original version when it hits DVD shelves on October 16.

As long as they don't kill off Optimus and make a member of "the breakfast club" the leader...like they did in the '80s. That sh*t made me mad. And I was only 6!

This sounds like a great plan. Of course the only thing that made the first film bearable was the light-hearted humor, so let's just get rid of that and kick up the 'tude a notch. Moodier lighting, that'll help. Don't need a good script when you've got moody lighting.

I thought Michael Bay had quit after having a hissy-fit when Paramount announced they weren't going with Blu-Ray.
