Are Plans for 'Serenity 2' in the Works?
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels
The ever-lovable, wonder-writer/director Joss Whedon needs to get a few projects on the go. After running himself ragged with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, he brought the world a small helping of Firefly, a pretty kick-arse movie adaptation Serenity, almost made Wonder Woman, and continued the story of the slayers in comic form. Having handed over the reigns on that, what's left to do? It's not like Veronica Mars is still around for him to guest on! Well, he's still working on his supernatural Goners script after getting a bunch of studio notes, but Whedon never takes it easy, so it's not a surprise that after reviving his first beloved series, there's rumors of a Serenity 2.Oh yes, the Browncoats might come back -- not necessarily to the big screen, but to DVD. While the film's box office didn't live up to expectations, it has, unsurprisingly, had a heck of a stint on disc. Moviehole recently chatted with Alan Tudyk (Wash), and he said: "They had to put [the new DVD] out because they've been selling out of the other one, and so Universal's like 'So, let's do another one.' And now... there's now a chance there's going to be another movie." Well, this is just about the most solid Whedon rumor you can get. While he always has a million potential projects swimming in his head, it's big news if the studios can see an audience and get interested in the idea.
So, does this make you giggle with schoolgirl-like glee? If so, keep picking up those DVDs and we might just see Serenity fly again! But heck, they could even keep the ship docked the entire time and show a lot of Summer Glau butt-kicking. Who wouldn't be up for more of that!?

I wouldnt be up for more of that.
Unless you are going to go prequel or flashback heavy, the story of Firefly is dead.

The firefly story is not dead. Joss has already made it clear that the story revolves around 2 characters. Those two characters are still alive, and now have even more of a history. :)

But of those two characters, what more is left?
We know all about River now. That story is done.
Reavers: Done.
Captain Reynolds: I still hate the Govt. I can never commit to a woman. I can never have things go simple.
Honestly, what more is there?
Joss killed the wrong characters. He should have killed Zoe. That would have added a huge character development for Mal and Wash. With Wash dead, Zoe will just become Mal's "yes woman" again and be very one dimensional.
Firefly was a great story that had alot of potential. Serenity was a wreck of a story that destroyed the heart and greatness of Firefly.

Oh please please please. Serenity is phenomenal. Universal could release a DVD to amazing fanfare and make extra bucks from airing the movie on sci-fi channel. Serenity might not be enough for network TV, but it could be huge on cable.

So for all you fans who think that Serenity is phenomenal, are you perfectly ok with all of the contradictions the film makes to the series?

Whedon says about everything in the movie was planned as Season 2 stuff, so go cry more about it ruining the 15-episode UNIVERSE.

Firefly and Serenity were both awesome, so a new movie would be much anticipated, with hopefully as many of the original cast as possible.

I always suspected there was more to Jayne's dislike of River than meets the eye. I would love to see something happen between those two characters. It would be hilarious. Plus the Reevers aren't gone, we just know where they came from. And the Alliance is mad at the group for revealing their nasty little secret so revenge is on the books. There's a few storylines for you.

@Gordon Werner: contraditction? How about the fact that in Firefly, Simon knew NOTHING of what had happened to River and hired someone else to get her out and then in Serenity HE is the one who got her out and seemed to know much more about her condition.
And what happened to the Hands of Blue? Even if they failed and the operative had to come in and finish the job, would mentioning that have been that hard?
@Ghaleon: You got a source on that? Even if it was from Joss' mouth, if it wasnt stated before Serenity went into production I have to take that with a grain of salt and believe it may be revisionist history. And even so, perhaps thats ultimately why I felt betrayed by Serenity. If it truly was an entire season of story arc crammed into one film, then that is part of its major short comings. Ultimately, he had a chance to give us the next Star Wars and he delivered us Return of the Jedi.
@Kristina- The Alliance coming after them wouldn't be a good story line. Then it just becomes the Fugitive in space. No thanks. As for the Reavers, sure they may not be gone but by revealing their origin you took away all mystery and scariness to them. Now they are just your generic space evil race. Besides, their existence was always a little weak. So they are bloodthirsty savage cannibals but seem to know how to operate space ships with ease?

I suggest tracking down the comic book miniseries that came out around the time movie was released (now collected into handy graphic novel form). It not only explains what happened to the Blue Hands guys, it explains why Inara and Book aren't on board when the movie starts and other sundry items.
And, yes, Joss has said on numerous occasions that the overall plot line for "Serenity" was what was planned for Firefly's second season, with the possible inclusion of Wash getting killed off.
So, I say, let's see what he had in mind for Season Three.

Well there are two ways to go here.
1st: Dispense all of the with flashbacks to the all important back story. Let's SEE a movie about the war. Let's SEE the whole Broawncoat story instead of theconstant references to it.
btw, make up your mind, J.W. Is the Alliance a bunch of planets in different solar systems like the series, or all in one system like the movie. It made no sense in the movie. How can planets farther out than freaking Pluto be nice, warm, and inhabitable?
2nd way to go:Mal has, for all intents and purposes, given one heavy handed punch to the eye of the Alliance. What he did has shaken the government and created a second rebellion: many factions with the goal of tearing down the Alliance are forming their own pacts or feuding. The various rebellions are further fueled by the fact that Mal is an old Browncoat warrior. Rebellions are breaking out everywhere and many want Mal to lead them - but is Mal willing to lead or too burnt out / jaded to bother? And there is nothing the Alliance needs more than to make an example of Mal.
It would NOT be the Fugitive in space, because Mal was always running - only this time he's the direct target. Now his enemy's are known but his allies are strangers. Plus, whenever an established government is faltering, there are always third party interests even among the leadership who are willing to tear down the current government to put themselves into power. The wars and politics of a collapsing, struggling giant like the Alliance and those who would feed on it, could make for a great story.
Hey, it worked for Isaac Asimov's THE FOUNDATION.
We haven't begun to get at what Mal and Zoe are all about (but PLEASE no romance. The series already established them as fellow warriors, not companions). And we certainly haven't got anywhere close to what River is capable of doing.
Okay, I'm done! Not that I LOVE this series or anything!

If you have to create a story in a different medium to get a point across in your primary medium, then you are not a very effective story teller.
And yes, I read the comic books. They were crap.
Again though, show me that was said BEFORE Serenity went into production. I do not doubt it, just need some proof. But my point still stands, if all of Season 2 was crammed into one film, then you are seriously losing out on major parts. If that was the case he should have only done about 1/3 of the story from season 2 and then it would have been a better accepted film.

Couple of random thoughts...
1) Several people have made a very good point. The Reavers are *possibly* not gone. How many of them followed Mal to Mr universe's planet? And since the crew was able to rebuild Serenity there, one can only assume that those who did follow, did not leave. Personally, I believe that the Reavers are finished as a *Major* source of power, but isolated groups of them that weren't "home" when Serenity came calling could still pop up here and there.
2) Do we really, really, really believe that among the "Highest members of parliament" that had "personally seen" River, she only picked up one secret from one guy and that was the only secret that guy had? Granted, this line is a bit thin to base a sequel on, you'd basically be remaking Serenity, and I like to give Joss Wheadon a little more credit for originality than that. Then again, Each season of Buffy was pretty much a re-write of the season before. This sound familiar? "Oh Look, I'm a slayer and you guys are my best friends. Oh look, these -insert group here- are cool too, they are smart/strong/pretty like me. Oh, sorry I've been avoiding all of my bestus friends but my new friends can do things you guys can't. Oh look, my new best friends have tried to kill me, I should go make up with my buddies and together we can beat the crap out of those guys who tricked me and we'll all be friends again until the beginning of next season where I'll start off by whining about how hard my life is and how much you guys don't understand it." Sorry, a bit off tangent there but it does illustrate my point. Give Joss' talent for making a formulaic script seem fresh, River's having another "Secret" she picked up could be a plausible plot device. After all I not only watched but have all 7 seasons of Buffy on DVD...
3) Nature abhors a (Power) vacuum Sure, the Reavers are finished as a power base. Who's going to step in and take their place? With the Reavers a diminished threat, perhaps the Alliance will step in and institute some "security measures" until they have finally destroyed they last of the Reavers. Using a "viable" external threat would allow them to accomplish much much more than the Rebellion of the brown coats ever could as far as securing personal power for the Alliance parliament.
4) People in power rarely like to be publicly embarrassed. They probably wouldn't go after Mal and the crew initially or obviously, but whose to say they wouldn't send another (several) Operative(s). Besides, do you really think Mal is going to let those who are responsible for Shepard Book's death get off so lightly? Besides, let us not forget the good Shepard himself. Who only knows what he had on the Parliament. It had to be something big for them to let him walk. Maybe Shepard Book has a little posthumous gambit set up where Mal is given the location to Book's "proof" and has to retrieve it to keep the Alliance off of him for good (or at least until they figure out how to counter it).
Any of these would make a movie I'd go see...

Yeah, we're talking about a guy who came up with seven brilliant to interesting seasons of Buffy and five excellent seasons of Angel. I honestly don't think he has a problem with a shortage of ideas for new storylines and character development and that he can come up with a script better than what's currently being put out there in the genre in his sleep. Hopefully, Universal will let him.
