'Scream 4' Gets the Greenlight?

The Scream franchise is one that's always pissed me off. The first film was dynamite -- a real gem -- but then the second two were bought at Costco and dressed up to slightly resemble the first film, only it wasn't hard to spot the faults. In a minute I'll tell you exactly how I think the franchise should've ended, but first off the news: According to this really weird blog called, quite simply, The Weinstein Company, the boys have officially greenlit Scream 4. It appears as if this is some sort of company blog promoting all things Weinstein, but I still have to warn you to take this with a grain of salt, even if it does come with quotes.
Anyway, here's the so-called official announcement: "The Scream franchise has become a cult classic. Together, all three movies have grossed over $300 million at the box office, just in the United States alone. The fans have been asking for a 4th Scream movie for years and we're finally giving it to them. As far as details go, we're only in the planning stages and we may not get around to it [Scream 4] for quite some time, but rest assured, it will happen." A second quote says there isn't even a script yet, and I very much doubt this will be a pre-strike priority flick, so it's greenlit but we won't see it actually hit theaters for awhile. I know the Weinsteins have been trying to pull a fourth flick together for years, but both Wes Craven and Neve Campbell were never interested. Personally, I don't see why Campbell wouldn't do it -- I mean, what else is she doing (oh wait, she starred in three episodes of Medium ... nevermind). So we'll see.
My friend and I always get all worked up when it comes to the Scream series. Shortly after the third film came out, we talked for hours and practically re-wrote (through our conversation) the entire ending. In our minds, we think Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) should've been the mastermind behind all the killings throughout all three films. This is something that should've been planned in advance (and he survived the first film, so they had time to do it), and it would've been an outcome that made so much more sense. He's the horror geek. He wanted to plan the perfect trilogy. He's the one who should've orchestrated everything -- not some long-lost brother (WTF was up with that plot twist???). Anyway, who knows where they'll go with a fourth film (God bless the screenwriter in charge of trying to come up with a workable story), but I've seen crazier films hit the multiplex.

No. No. No. This was always a planned triology, even if they didn't bother writing the ending to Scream 3 until ten minutes before filming. Making a fourth is just another tell that TWC is sinking.

Erik, I totally agree with you about Randy; I'd wanted him to be the killer from the beginning, but oh well. I guess Jamie Kennedy doesn't have what it takes to do the deed. Though it's still possible for him to come back from the dead and be the mastermind behind it all, who the fuck makes a quadrilogy?
Oh wait, the Alien movies. That's just because they ran out of plot though and had to resort to making movies of video games.

Bloody Disgusting is saying that this story isn't true at all. Scream 4 isn't being worked on, nor has it been greenlit.
As a side note, I've had the privilege of seeing a very recent list of films that each studio plans on making before the strike, and Scream 4 wasn't on that list. If it were in any planning stages at all, it would have been on the list, because even details that are not definite and deals that are only offered or tentative (e.g. attached directors or stars) are on this list as well.
So no Scream 4 for now. But seriously...Neve Campbell needs a job.

Once again another classic (I am speaking of the 1st Scream only) is shamed in memory by numerous & tiresome sequels. This is sad. Nobody ever learns. Money ruins everything.
I really don't think the 1st Scream was intended to be part 1 of a trilogy. It made tons of money, then they suddenly come out & say "it was meant to be a trilogy". Yet still the other 2 films seemed like they just pulled them out of their asses at the last minute. Just like The Matrix.
I can't help but add my idea of how the Scream series should have ended. To me, it would have been great if by the end of Scream 3, it turned out Neve Campbell's character was the final killer. The films always implied that what was going on was pushing her over the edge. It would have been great if they had the guts to go there.

I loved the first movie, and I have to say I thought 2 was pretty good, until the end where it all falls apart, mainly because unlike the first one where there were clues and it could possibly be figured out, the killers were the most random people, Billy's mother and an idiot? WTF come on! Somehow I think 2's ending was worse than 3 for me, just because the rest of the movie was good.
I have to say I like Randy being the killer. And you could have "killed" him off in two, but make some gesture to imply he might not be dead and bring him back in 3.
Let's just rehire the actors and remake Scream 2 & 3 as good movies, anyone?

Randy the Killer??? That would of sucked worse than the ending we got to begin with!
The killer never had to be a mastermind of all 3 movies. The crazy boyfriend and his sidekick in film 1, the vengeful mother and crazy drama kid in film 2 and last but not least the crazy girl who's entire past is f'ed up and always beeing tormented.... Sidney!!!!!! She should of been the killer in the third movie based on everyone around her either profiting from her loses in life or tormenting her everyday because of what happened to her. Make her go crazy and insane, A Lunatic Neve Campbell! Would have been nice I think and she would have died, I hate that Bitch!

I liked the Trilogy myself but definately agree the 3rd could have been better.. Making Randy have his perfect trilogy is an idea not heard often, although it is a good idea that wasnt used, it doesnt add up too perfectly as his character liked Sid too much to hurt her.. The real ending was a let down though.. I know Brothers and sisters argue , but Bloody hell! This wasnt good enough! I personally would have kept cotton alive too! Anyway, anyone who likes the trilogy can visit my site to have a look around and watch our Fan made films called "Arnold Scream" Based in the UK.. Enjoy! :O)

Glad everyone can agree that the first film was amazing. Good to see at least half of you have a brain enough to know the second was awesome as well. The third (yeah, not amazing)was still miles ahead of most "slasher" films.
Randy as the killer doesn't make sense to me. Sidney does, tho.
It is very much possible for the fourth to be a great addition, even without Neve. Just have the film's opening scene be a bait-and-switch terrifying scene of a family being murdered that acts as the opening scene to the next film in the 'Stab' franchise. The next scene would be of Dewey and Gail at Sidney's funeral. With the success of a prior 'Stab' movie and the production of another, Sid's life is being broadcast over the world and she's getting tons of unwanted exposure. She locks herself up for some time to cope and eventually kills herself. Or did she? Blah, blah, blah. Dewey and Gail investigate the staff at the hospital and find out that Cillian Murphy is a crazed fan who is now on a killing spree. Use a good writer, infuse it with some humor, some terror, and some movie references and you got your movie.
Other casting suggestions: Scarlett Johansson, Clive Owen, and fellow nineties scream queen Jennifer Love Hewitt as the actress portraying Sidney.
