Anchor Bay Will Bring Us 'Charlie Banks'

While Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst is already moving onto his second cinematic feature, a sports drama starring Ice Cube, many of us are still anxious to see what he made of his first, The Education of Charlie Banks. A few years ago, he was telling people he was a "real director" before he had even made the feature. Then, it sounded like the statement might have been more than pompous boasting -- beyond a cast headlined by the wonderful Jesse Eisenberg (Roger Dodger) and Eva Amurri (Saved!), Variety gave the film a solid review from Tribeca earlier this year. Now, finally, the film has been picked up for distribution. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Anchor Bay has picked up the North American theatrical and DVD rights to the debut, for release this spring. It's a coming-of-age drama starring Eisenberg as a high school student who sees a bully (Jason Ritter) severely beat two kids at a party. Years after telling the police and reneging his testimony, he enters college and the bully shows up at his school, becoming part of his circle. Of course, the kid wonders what the bully's motives are, and whether Ritter's character is there for revenge. Between curiosity over Durst's directorial chops, and this cast, I'll be there to check it out, but what about you? Will Durst's name make you run to the theater? Keep you from it? Or is his involvement irrelevant?

As much as I love Amurri and Eisenberg, Durst is such an asshat that I will not touch this with a barge pole.

I saw this at TIFF because it was filmed in my home state (RI). What a pleasure. Good story, well made, good acting ... what more do you need?!? Hope this goes to theaters, I liked it. Durst had no star-draw for me (I'm too old), but he was great at the Q&A.

Limp Bizkit member Fred Durst entered a house containing hidden cameras under the pretense that a 13 year old girl willing to have sex awaited inside. Durst was lured to the house from the internet by a 28 year old police decoy after an exchange of emails and instant messages in which Durst propositioned the decoy for sex. The decoy was part of an NBC Dateline sting called ?To Catch a Predator?, which led 182 suspected child predators to the Hollywood house over a series of 4 days. After Durst entered the house, the host Chris Hanson, appeared from another room inside the house to confront him. Hanson held a transcript of Durst?s explicit online conversations with the decoy, to what seemed to be Durst?s surprise. He asked the star what he was doing in the house. Durst responded by claiming he had seen the show before, knew it was a sting, and had no intention of having sex with the girl. Durst did agree that he did in fact have those online conversations with the decoy. His explanation for entering the house was ?I leaked a sex tape and it didn?t do anything for my career, so I figured I’d try this? Upon exiting the house Durst was rushed by police and placed in handcuffs. While being cuffed he exclaimed “Wait, I didn’t do it all for the nookie.? While searching Durst?s vehicle, police found an array of questionable items, including a penis enlargement pump, sexual lubricant, condoms, Rohypnol, bottles of liquor, ecstasy, pornography, and what police describe as “some form of mechanical vagina?” Durst is still being questioned by police, who have not yet stated what charges Durst will be facing.
