Monday Morning Poll: What Do You Expect from 'Transformers 2?'
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Monday Morning Poll
Since the Transformers DVD arrives in stores tomorrow, and since I'm in the middle of writing a review of said DVD, I figured why not ask around to see what you folks expect from a Transformers 2. Here's what we know so far about the sequel: Director Michael Bay and star Shia LaBeouf will be returning; a script is currently being written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ehren Kruger; the film will be moodier and deeper (according to visual-effects supervisor Scott Farrar); and the studio is eying a June 26th, 2009 release date. I never had the chance to review Transformers when it first hit screens, so I'll save some of my thoughts on the film for my upcoming DVD review. However, I will say that I wasn't entirely pleased with the finished product.
That said, it was hard for me to expect more out of a Michael Bay film. The guy seems to know exactly what audiences want -- I like to call him the Emeril of the big screen; "You know what this film needs? Bigger action sequences ... BAM!" For an on-again, off-again fan of Transformers growing up, I did not like the "look" of the robots, with the exception of only a few. There was way too much silver going on, and I found myself confused a lot of the time as to which robot was which; who did what, and so on. The fight sequences were all over the place; stuff happened way too fast and the final battle felt too staged and somewhat claustrophobic. The human element, I felt, was pulled off rather well; I liked LaBeouf, and thought he did a good job. But upon leaving the theater, my friend and I couldn't help but feel let down some. And, trust me, I went into this as a fan. For those that absolutely loved Transformers, I imagine you'll simply expect more of the same out of the sequel. But for those, like me, who are fans and wanted the first film to be better, I'm curious to find out what you expect from the sequel. What do you want to see? What do you think the sequel needs?
So, I ask you: What does Transformers 2 need in order for it to please more people?

a slow down on the action cuts, some of it is just to hectic to follow and the transformations while looking cool are just to messy and quick to actually see what the feck is going where, keep the humour in as i thought TF had some great comedy scenes, and lets see more robots that don't look like a large magnet with loads of metal bits thrown at it

For the most part i loved the movie but i do agree that the action sequences were claustrophobic, and just to close and was kinda hard to see the whole thing on the screen, granted this could have been partly due to the fact i was in the third row and staring up at the screen the whole time. Maybe if bay just didn't have as many really tight shots of the action sequences it would be better.
I would also like to see sam and bumblebee bond a bit more they didn't really get to know each other in the first one partly due to the fact that bumblebee couldn't talk except to replay old radio broadcasts

imho, you guys are always going to find something you don't like in michael bay action movies, so you should just stop going to them and save yourself the headache.
this is the exact same conversation that we have every time a monster blockbuster comes out - someone doesn't like everything about it because it doesn't meet their perception of what the film should have been.
well, guess what? big money directors don't get to be that way by taking public opinion polls before they start on each film project.
if you don't like michael bay, don't pay money to see his movies.

I consider myself to be a pretty knowledgeable fan of the Transformers universe. In my 30s now, so my memory may fail me when it comes to some facts. I enjoyed the Transformers movie this past summer but was also disappointed. The movie felt empty for the most part. I won't get into details. What I'd like to see in a sequel would be a plot that has Unicron involved in it. Considering how big of a project that would be, I doubt it'll ever happen. But having unicron and more of an origins type of piece would be great for a sequel.
I'm a bigger fan of the Beast Wars/Beast machines saga though. I loved how they went in a different direction with the storyline, being that the characters were way in the future, and the writers did a great job of sprinkling in the past using the Generation one transformers as a big part of the plot in the Beast Wars series. They did a good job in respecting the original series.
Anyway, if Unicron is in anyway introduced in Transformers 2, then I think they'd have a nice lead-in to a Transformers 3 movie.

It seems that the people who think that the action shots were too close have lost touch with reality. Remember people these "bots" are not real, if he had shown us shots of the action from further back it would look much more like a video game and people would complain that it looked so fake. To make the action as believable as possible it has to be up close so that the viewers imagination is forced to fill in the missing action.

"What does Transformers 2 need in order for it to please more people?"
1. A plot.
2. A writer for halfway decent dialogue.
3. Action sequences you can actually follow.
4. A different director, so we get less of the racist misogyny of Michael Bay movies.

I would like to see more commercialism in the sequel. Sure, it was great how the main characters other than the humans were promoting both a toy product for children and a car for adults, and how the main robot character for no reason changed his physical appearance in the middle of the movie just to advertise another product. And of course I enjoyed the Mountain Dew Machine character and the Xbox character, the scene where John Turturro literally turned to the camera and straight up explained to the audience why he prefers Nokia cell phone products over other cell phone products. And I liked the way Bay got the military to help him craft the movie into a commercial for the military and openly said in interviews that it was designed as a "recruiting tool."
So don't get me wrong, the original TRANSFORMERS is some of the best product placement ever created in the history of advertising. My hat is off to all their hard, soul-less work, but a sequel has to raise the bar and so I would definitely like to see alot more mentions and testimonials for the products like they did with Nokia. We at PepsiCo are working hard with Hasbro-General-Motors-US-Navy-Bay Productions to craft the persona of the Mountain Dew Robot character (the lead villain in the sequel) to make sure he is a strong spokesperson and a villain with a tragic side to him in the tradition of Dracula or Chester Cheetah.
I have been lucky enough to read an early draft of the script and I have VERY high hopes for the new human characters they are introducing such as Mountain Dew Game Fuel and Amp Energy 88 (played by some kid from The O.C.). I think consumers will FLIP OUT when they see how well Nike shoes are portrayed in this new story. Bravo to the copy writers, I just hope Spielberg doesn't make them water it down.

Well I really can't answer that question of what would I like to see in Transformers 2 since I have yet to see Transformers.
As for the DVD review, I would love to review this Transformers DVD for my blog that is due out tomorrow considering I was a huge fan of Transformers when I was a growing up. This should be an interesting movie.
Enjoy.

Okay, I agree 100% with jason and KingOnSlaught. People are constantly trying to name every little flaw in films today. I for one, am in love with the TRANSFORMERS movie, and I'm female... which is't to common.
People who don't like action scenes need to suck it up, or simply not bother seeing the movie. TRANSFORMERS is mainly about a war that's been happening for... a long time let's just say, so yeah there's gonna be a lot of action in it. Just think , the Autobots and Decepticons just arived on Earth and are desperatly racing to find the Allspark.
Because of that, you'd think there would be mega action. Now that the race is over, the 2nd movie should be more relaxed, and the TRANSFORMERS can have more time to actualy talk to each other and the humans.
SPOILER ALERT: Since they will most likely bring Megatron back from the dead, they can have more of the Megatron/Starscream 'I'm a better leader then you' conflicts. So people, just chill, in my opinion, the first movie was a great way to kick things off. Hey, the movie DID make millions.

I totally agree with King and Lamuria. Everyones a critic or tries to be these days. I absolutely loved the movie... even more than i expected. There were a few minor flaws but you can't please everyone all the time. I grew up watching the show. The flames on Prime didn't bother me a bit. Name changes.. big deal. It's giant Fu**ing robots kicking ass and that's what I've wanted to see for 20+ years now. Michael Bay didn't "rape my childhood".. he brought almost every geeks dream to life and did it beautifully.
Anyway, As for the second movie all I REALLY want to see is SOUNDWAVE and SHOCKWAVE! If he sticks with the cartoon.. of course we'll see Starscream return and Megatrons underwater base. That was made pretty obvious by the ending I think. Slow down the action just a tad, it did get confusing at times. More Sam and Bumblebee stuff!

- More decipticons, more megatron. Period!
- No more stupid story arcs which add nothing to the movie. Transformers started well but completely lost its way with the idiotic sector 7 story arc which was a waste of time and destroyed the momentum of the film.
- trim the amount of human characters, there were too many characters in the first which did nothing but annoy.
- Get rid of the spy decipticon (the little humoniod one), this character was so stupid and annyoing.
- Have some Autobots which aren't just cars, bring in some more diversity.

Almost forget bring an editor that understands how to cut action scenes, the sense of space and flow were lost in the first.

I'm totally with Lamuria_Eclipse, jason and KingOnSlaught on the movie. The movie was awsome and I am a very big fan of Transformers, and a girl, but that's probably because I LOVE anything hot on wheels.
I'll admit it that the battle scenes between the Autobots and the Decepticons did go a little fast, but it was all cool. It was well done!
I absolutely loved Bumblebee in the movie and I hope to see him again in the second, as well as every one of the Autobots from the first. And I would love to see more Autobots and Decepticons. And Hotrod better be one of them! And Bluestreak! I totally love those guys!
I also would like to see Unicron in the next movie, seeing he is a badass. I would like to see Shockwave too! And you know that the scorpion guy isn't dead. He might have been badly damaged but he left the battle scene alive. So he should come back too.
I can't wait for The Transformers 2 to come out and I hope it gets done soon!

i loved this film!!!! people are critiqueing it too much.....
i can understand how some would say that the action can leave you confused at certain spots, like when jazz was killed, but it's nontheless shocking once your brain catches up with what happens...
i loved the transformation sequences, especially the first optimus transformation.....
i would have to agree that i would love to see more sam and bumblebee bonding, as well as more human-autobot interraction..
but i would also like to see more diverse vehicles on each side (for instance i don't want most decepticons being military vehicles, and each autobot being an expensive civillian vehicle)...
i would've much rather seen bumblebee fight barricade, rather than sam & mikaela fight frenzy...
and i think it would be cool if show a little bit more of the back-history between optimus's surviving team, such as telling the audience why each autobot decided to fight for the autobots
plus it would be cool for them to explain what the term "brother" means to a cybertronian

I loved how the movie was, except for the fact that there wasn't that much character developement with the Transformers themselves, i felt a lack in there. I hope with the mucho dinero they made off of the first one there's gonna be more of the Transformers themselves in the next one.
