Great Films Too Painful to Watch Twice
Filed under: Drama, Fandom, Home Entertainment, Lists
The Onion AV Club is unquestionably my favorite entertainment-focused website (other than Cinematical, of course!). Their outstanding coverage of all things pop culture suggests an indie-leaning Entertainment Weekly, and I consider that a very good thing. They always do a great weekly list, and one of their recent offerings is no exception. Check out "Not Again: 24 Great Films Too Painful to Watch Twice." The first movie I thought of when I saw that title was Requiem for a Dream, so it's fitting that they put it in the #1 spot (not sure if these are in order of "most painful" or not). I saw Requiem for a Dream in college -- on a double date! So imagine not only suffering through one of the toughest movies of all time in a theater, but suffering through it with a hyperventilating girl you're trying to get to first base with! Needless to say, it didn't work out.
Though I don't think it's a "great film" by any stretch of the imagination, I can certainly see why Irreversible (#13 on the list) was included. I don't know if I physically could stomach that one a second time. I remember convincing my friends to come see it with me by telling them "It's supposed to be just like Memento!" It was not just like Memento. I still shudder when I walk past a fire extinguisher. I must be a masochist, because I either would watch or have watched several of the movies on their list more than once -- United 93, Million Dollar Baby, Audition, Leaving Las Vegas, etc. There's a lot of good rental ideas for those with a taste for challenging fare, so fire up your Netflix queue and head on over to the link. Just don't plan any parties around these flicks! How about you guys, what is a great film you could never sit through a second time?

"Saving Private Ryan." I saw it on the big screen, held my breath for 170 minutes, then walked out of the theater stunned. In two short hours I learned that everything I knew about war was completely wrong. I felt dirty and ashamed. To this day scenes from that film haunt me, such as Pvt. Stanley Mellish's death. I can not watch this film again.

Once again im not suprised at cinematical writers having a poor taste in judging films. Irreversible is a superb film, just because you couldn't handle the male nudity or the intense (but important) violence doesn't make it bad. It is a superb film that is constantly passed over by so called "movie buffs"

It's interesting that you refer to the Onion AV Club as "an indie-leaning Entertainment Weekly," because a few months back I happened to notice a question sent in to EW concerning this very topic. EW called "Requiem for a Dream" something along the lines of "The Greatest Movie You Never Want to See Again." Interesting, huh?

Oh yeah, Requiem for a Dream. I once tried to watch it a second time just to listen to the director's commentary but I had to stop as soon Ellen Burstyn starts popping diet pills.

Josh is DEAD ON with "Salo". It destroyed part of my soul. I seriously felt like part of me was dead after watching that.

Also -- I'd like to add "Ghosts... of the Civil Dead", even though I own it and have watched it many times. I still get a hollow, horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I see the spine of the DVD. Still, Nick Cave. Brilliant.

Another film left off the list is Passion Of The Christ. When I saw it, I couldn't deny the power of the film, especially as a believer. But I was so distraught by the end, I knew I couldn't watch it multiple times.
It really angered me that people let their little children go watch it. To the majority of these same people, when Michael Madsen cuts a man's ear off with a razor it's horrible, but watching Jesus be tortured for 2 hours is ok. I guess it's alright because it's Jesus. Talk about screwed up priorities.

Thirds _Requiem_.
Also? _Breaking the Waves_. Not violent, but just so bleak.
