Karl Urban Makes the New 'Trek' Crew Complete
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, Paramount, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Word from The Hollywood Reporter is that New Zealand actor Karl Urban has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek re-start. Fans of fantastical cinema will no doubt remember Urban from his work in Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, Doom, The Chronicles of Riddick and Pathfinder. Mr. Urban will be playing medical officer "Bones" McCoy, a character made famous by the late DeForest Kelley. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but here's what the all-new Enterprise crew looks like...Captain Kirk (previously played by William Shatner) -- Chris Pine (27 years old)
Spock (Leonard Nimoy) -- Zachary Quinto (30)
Sulu (George Takei) -- John Cho (35)
McCoy (DeForest Kelley) -- Karl Urban (35)
Scotty (James Doohan) -- Simon Pegg (37)
Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) -- Zoe Saldana (29)
Chekov (Walter Koenig) -- Anton Yelchin (18)
...and Eric Bana as the villainous Nero. (With a special appearance from Leonard Nimoy!) Production on the film is expected to run from November to March. So what do you think of the whole crew?
Also, feel free to pick through our numerous reports on this flick. Like right here, here and here.

I think the cast is perfect. Kirk and Spock especially look dead on as the younger versions I picture in my mind. I will be sold once I hear Zachary Quinto do an agreeable Spock/Vulcan voice. I do look forward to Zoe Saldana...that's one hot Uhura! The Eric Bana casting seems off to me...I still think of him as the Hulk, not a Star Trek villain. Also, I hope the actors being in their mid to late 30s will be passable as younger, Academy cadet versions. Seems they're the same age as the original crew when they were established officers.

That Eric Bana thing was a joke though, right? The poor guy is a great actor and yet he keeps suffering through unwatachably bad movies:
Black Hawk Down
Hulk
Troy
He's always the best part of the films but what happened to the Munich and Chopper level work?

Wow Karl Urban is one of my favorite actors (watch him in The Price of Milk; the movie that got him his Lord of the Rings role) so now with him joining a cast that already includes John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, I really want to see this movie! and I don't even like Star Trek!!!

I agree that Hulk and Troy were "unwatchably [sic] bad movies" but Black Hawk Down does not deserve to be on your list. BHD is a superbly crafted film and respectable to the book.
Now, my take on the new Star Trek cast is right on and go for it!! I think this film will strike gold...

You all have to be kidding right? Karl Urban is way too big to play Bones. He's about three inches taller and muscular, Bones was 150 pounds dripping wet.
I've put my my own thoughts about what the cast should look like and would love to hear everyone's thoughts. Too me there is too many known actors who come in with preconceived notions about them (Pegg, Cho and Quinto mainly) and I just honestly don't see where they're going with this.

Switch Simon Pegg and Carl Urban roles and I think you would be better off.

I like a lot of those guys, but I'm kinda getting a Muppet Babies vibe.
